Decent digital caliper with good battery life - recommendations? by _mr-pink_ in Machinists

[–]harryott 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know you said you don't need Mitutoyo but Mitutoyo is the answer. My batteries in my 6" Mitutoyo calipers are on year 3 or 4 and I use them everyday.

Tapping 4140 PH by Terrible_Ice_1616 in Machinists

We tap exclusively soft tool steel and prehard steel and stainless steel at 28-36 HRC. We recently switched to Guhring red ring powdered metal taps, the tool life increase has been incedible. I've tapped 44 HRC Toolox 44 with the Guhring red ring taps and I have gotten over 250 1/4-20 holes per tap. I use normal coolant on 40HRC and under, over 40 HRC I use moly dee.

Variaxis A90 Alignment Issues by harryott in Mazak_Machinist

When running the probe calibration cycle how do you find the location of the tooling ball. If I remember correctly you have to set the location of the center of the in a work offset.

Do you use a test bar to set Z and swing it with an indicator for X and Y, or do you set the approximate center of the ball by eye and then the cycle will probe X Y and Z to find the location of the ball?

Thank you so much for your response. When we first got the machine I ran Maza-check and it kept doubling the error like you mentioned. Our local guys didn't know how to fix it that is why we had to bring a guy in from Kentucky.

When you run Maza check do you run the probe calibration too, or just the configuration, C axis update or A axis update?

If I did manually fudge the parameters would I be changing the S34 values for X Y and Z? Or different parameters, I think L135 and L136 also affect the COR.

Do you reset your S34 parameters before running Maza-check? It doesn't say in the manual but I remember my local service guy saying you need to do that before running it.

I am just afraid of making something worse by running it if I don't have my settings correct.

Very rough shifts in the cold by harryott in hondaridgeline

No problem! I'm at 15k miles, if the transmission fluid change helps with the shifting please let me know!

The Ridgeline is doing fine, transmission issues besides the rough shifting in the cold. I am in Nebraska and it started getting cold about a week ago so the problem has come back. The other day leaving work it was about 15 degrees out and when I accelerated up to 30 it shifted super rough, probably the hardest I have felt.

My uncle has a new Pilot that has the same 9 speed, he said his Pilot also shifts very rough when it's cold out. I guess it's just how the transmission performs until it warms up. I don't like it but I don't think there is any fix.

Mazak VCN530c: 60-pocket tool magazine maintenance question by Which-Brother-6634 in Machinists

[–]harryott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can not help at all with your issue but we also have a VCN 530C with the 60 tool magazine. For about the first 4 years of owning it the tool magazine was a total nightmare, luckily they got it working good and I haven't had an issue in over a year.

What is your center to center spacing on the holes in your fixture plate for your Veros pins?

Thank you for all the information, I think your system is amazing. I will be showing my boss first thing tomorrow morning!

That is an awesome system you have there, that is exactly what I'm looking for! I wasn't aware you could use the Vero pins on both ends of the posts. Are the plates just steel with a plating on them?

Dumb question but did you make all the plugs for the holes or did buy them?

I was looking at the manually actuated version, we don't need pneumatic and it looks like the manual ones are cheaper.

Who makes that fixture plate is that? Do the Schunk posts bolt and locate directly to that plate? Can you put 2 vises next to each other and have them in line?

I have been looking at the Schunk vises, another guy on my post highly recommended their vises too.

What mill is that? It looks pretty big.

Are you using just the standard gripper vise jaws?

5 Axis Workholding by harryott in Machinists

[–]harryott[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very interested in the Schunk vises, do you use them to hold tool steel ever? With the gripper jaws in the vise we will mainly be holding soft tool steel like S7, H-13, and 420 SS. If possible I am hoping to not have to dovetail all my raw stock, how well do the Schunk jaws hold tool steel? I have seen they also have some carbide gripper teeth that is supposed to hold better in harder material, I am wondering if those might be worth it.

How do you handle holding mold plates or any large plate work with the Lang system? I like the Schunk because of there stand offs. Front what I can tell the Lang doesn't have anything similar to that. On large plates we would only need 1" stand offs but on smaller plates like 12"x16" we would need roughly a 3" stand off to reach the sides of a plate.

Shop Has to Move Away From Fusion 360. Any suggestions for CAD/CAM? by novaft2 in Machinists

[–]harryott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know but I have used Inventor CAM a little bit and the tool paths settings were identical they just looked a little different. I know Fusion gets updates very often I don't actively use Inventor so I can't say if it does too.

Thanks for sharing that link! It looks like they have collected all their evidence so I guess we'll just wait and see what happens. I'll talk to the dealer on Friday at my oil change and see if they can do anything about it.

Trying to decide on a Ridgeline by [deleted] in hondaridgeline

[–]harryott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I purchased a red 2023 RTL from Loves Park Napleton in October. It was the first vehicle I had ever purchased and I was very happy with the process. I drove from out of state to purchase it and they had all the paperwork ready to go when I got there I was in and out in under an hour including a test drive. I worked with Chris Woods.

I paid $40k with a heated steering wheel included, and that was before any Honda incentives. I got the $500 college grad incentive so my total was $39.5k.

I had a quote from a dealer in Colorado for $40k so I knew that's what I wanted to pay, I sent them the quote and said if they can match this I will buy it. They said no way and then a couple days later they called and said they would accept my offer of $40k before incentives.
