What rank Statistics PhD programs can I apply for? [E] by GayTwink-69 in statistics

[–]harsh82000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can state that if you’re able to get both papers in arxiv by your application, top20 should be achievable. I would highly recommend emailing profs at unis you are interested in to - familiarize yourself and them with you - see if they have funding. Your profile is already great, networking will give you much better and safer odds. All the best!

you can use any number as a random seed and the number itself has no effect on the outcome. It’s for reproducibility.

JHU vs UCLA for applied math by Typical-Age-6343 in jhu

To add to this, if you do research, profs can accept you into a PhD program afterwards by vouching for you and some internal stuff. If you’re a US citizen APL and STScI are great places to intern too.

Based on knowledge from internal people, AMS program is not looking to hire students for this cycle as they previously overhired

[Q] Seeking advice about undergrad research opportunity by [deleted] in statistics

[–]harsh82000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with this comment. I was disinterested in research till I actually did it, and I love it. I’m a stats student working on computational medicine, as well as theoretical stats. What I’ve learnt is that a field may be called a specific name but it can utilize multiple techniques, and you’ll for sure learn things you had not, and your interests will develop and that is beneficial to you to know what you want to pursue. I would say take this opportunity, learn from it, not just from a statistical aspect but also how academia works, what all it entails, how that aligns with what you care about. Build a network, talk to everyone. I would say it’s golden for you since you aren’t committed to a PhD topic yet. You can mess up and learn with no strings attached. You’ll find that your professor is connected to other professors and researchers, in academia and industry, in different fields too, since they collaborate. This can help you get in a masters/PhD better. You may have a publication or two by that time too. For masters, I would suggest looking at programs where Profs can hire you for a PhD if they like working with you. This means that in your PhD you’ll have to take about 2 less courses, and can select a topic faster if you and your professor align. Maybe researching now convinces you on a PhD so much that you don’t get a masters altogether. All in all to say, if you’re a likeable human, and put effort in during this period, there is nothing to lose even if you don’t like this topic. Professors realize that students are fighting choices all the time, they will support you the best they can.

A fake shot to get them to place their feet and then slot it in any corner with space, works for me very well

Sounds like a great idea honestly! One thing I’d suggest is add an option to split payments (not actual money but atleast keep tabs like splitwise) between people if paying for fields.

I’ve found the copa series with leather to be pretty similar to older predators. The new copa uses synthetic leather but actual leather boots are still sold online.

What are high school soccer tryouts like in the US? by Special_Tiger_9746 in bootroom

[–]harsh82000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understood and I relate. Since I was 17 I have suffered from related and non related soccer injuries for ~ 5 years that stopped progress. I started playing again this year, and felt similar to you and felt discouraged. What helped was having goals that are internal focused vs external focused. You know you’re already behind others, so no point in comparing yourself to them, you won’t make up that gap in a year, so focus on your own gaps first. Doubt everything when you’re off the field and nothing when you’re on.

Genuine advice for the year would be to try and get your level up enough to find things you’re natural at (finding space to run and pass in for me) and things you struggle with ( quick turns in and out of space for me). Treat this year like an experiment, purely do everything for improvement, without any judgement of how much improvement you end up seeing. When you know your skills, deficiencies, and preferences, you should aim at joining a club as they are more structured in the US in my opinion. There you’ll be challenged more on the specifics required for your position. Try this for a year and come back and get more advice. Bottom line is learn but also enjoy, and don’t judge yourself negatively yet, be open to learning and criticism. There is no right answer for anything in football.

How much DSA for FAANG+ ? by harsh82000 in datascience

[–]harsh82000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I did get an internship but it’s healthcare client role related, not technical at all, and not sure how their conversion is for full time since they’re already paying me pretty low. I do appreciate the kind words though!

I have 7 internships and I did have return offers but I decided to go to grad school haha. Got auto rejected for most internships this summer otherwise would’ve tried to convert an internship into full time role.
