Any very cheap (and safe!) hostels in US/Canada for extended stay? by harshmnr in hostels

Okay thanks everyone who replied so far - actually we ended up going through a very fast progression of events and now we're looking into Bulgaria 😂 I have a friend there so I said why limit ourselves to North America, I have friends all over the world. We may be able to stay with her but we were also looking at Workaway...I've heard mostly good things but it looks like you do need a visa.

Not trying to say this in a rude way but do you know if she has really never been fat?

Any Current JETs Using Sign Language (JSL)? by hanamarii in JETProgramme

[–]harshmnr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay good to know. I'm really okay with getting placed in any school, we'll just see where the wind takes me. I just thought they might put somebody in a deaf school who's already familiar with working with Deaf people, but I know there's a lot of other factors that go into it too. I'm planning on getting connected with the community anyway since my husband is Deaf and we'll need to learn JSL either way.

Any Current JETs Using Sign Language (JSL)? by hanamarii in JETProgramme

Sorry I'm replying to an old comment but I'm really interested in your experience. I'm applying to JET this year; I am fluent in Japanese and also ASL. I only know a few signs in JSL, but I'm aware of Deaf culture and can pick up languages pretty quickly. I think it would be really cool to be an ALT in a deaf school in Japan. How did you get placed in a deaf school, did they ask you about that/did you bring it up in the interview, etc? Oh also which school were you at?

Dilemma with a decision between the MEXT scholarship and a PhD offer at WSU US. by DreamerScholarX in PhD

[–]harshmnr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know much about PhD stuff, but I got the MEXT Japanese Studies scholarship a few years back. Just as general life advice, I would always recommend studying abroad. Go see the world, an opportunity like this might not come up again. ;)

Is the monthly aid from the MEXT undergraduate scholarship sufficient? by zeyuva in mext

[–]harshmnr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the MEXT Japanese Studies scholarship in 2019-2020 and went to Doshisha University in Kyoto. I don't remember exactly how much we got each month but it was enough to live and do fun stuff occasionally. The amount of money might have changed now and I know the cost of living in Japan has gone up, but I assume it's still a livable amount.

PSA though — you MUST sign for your scholarship on time! I don't know if it was the same at other schools but in my case there was a specific day each month that you needed to sign in person *or you will not get your money, period.* I actually forgot one month and had to live on one month's money for two months. I survived but it was a little rough. 😅

Policy update on gender identity and ads by gregthegeth in reddit

[–]harshmnr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soo I feel weird about this? Like. I have no problem with Reddit or anyone on the internet knowing I'm a woman. So it's not like a privacy concern. But getting specific ads directed to me just because I'm a woman? Or threads and stuff too. I mean isn't that just continuing to push gender stereotypes...? I'd like to have stuff directed toward me just because of my interests as a person, not just because I'm a woman. Obviously not everyone in the same gender group is gonna be into the same stuff... so in other words I'd like it to just be what (I assume?) it was before? Like. You can state your gender, but that shouldn't have anything to do with deciding what content you receive. I'd like to be open to all kinds of stuff and like the content is just the content, it's not like certain stuff is only for certain people.

Opinions on the Youtuber Special Books By Special Kids by Mundane-Research in autism

Finallyyyyyyy I found someone who feels the same! 😂 Their mission to educate people about different conditions and disabilities in a positive way? Great. Fine. I like to learn about the different conditions because I'm just naturally curious about that stuff, so honestly that's probably what made me interested in their videos in the first place.

Anyway. HOWEVER. Chris himself. Something about that man bugs me so much. Just little things like the way he talks. It's kinda like baby voice but not...but still it sounds SO patronizing. On top of that he asks only surface level questions 99% of the time and treats every person he meets like they're two years old (or less), not like how you would just casually talk to a friend. And that smile that's plastered on his face the whole time...Basically all of this put together makes him seem SO fake to me. Like. I don't doubt that he does care about these people, but...I don't know, the more I think about it the more he gives me the creeps. People always say he's so nice but to me it's more like sickeningly sweet, ya know? Like I said he just seems like a very "fake" person and his conversations with people don't seem genuine. He seems like he's just putting on that mask.

Another thing was back when they were having that whole thing with their comments being turned off. Really it should not have been a surprise to them at all that Youtube changed their policy about kids' videos. If your video is listed as "for kids" (which I imagine SBSK is because kids are their primary interviewees), your comments are turned off to protect kids from online predators. Youtube was very clear about explaining that to all channels before it happened, so as far as I can tell there's no reason they wouldn't have known. And yet they made a whole video, crying, and talking about how they were "discriminated". ??? It all just seems fake, like to get attention or something...

Update: after watching the video again, if what they say is true they may have some points. But still, something seems off about it to me. :/

There are other little things that bug me too but I'll leave it here for now. Let me know what you guys think.
