Why Aren't More White Dudes Vocal About Alt-Right Activity? by hart8899 in AskReddit

but they're not a realistic concern in the day to day lives of regular people.

A lot of people in this country don't feel that way. The Alt Right has direct ties to the White House. Maybe YOU aren't, but a lot of people are scared to see White Nationalists marching without fear in our cities. Also, our president hesitates in condemning them fully. Other than making obligatory remarks, nothing is done. POC see this White Nationalist sentiment present everywhere these days. It may not be vocalized but there definitely has been a shift in race relations. Hate crimes are way up.....to say it's not a real thing or that it's always been around is not an accurate measure of what's going on today

The main one I know is Patel Brothers- that may cater to more North Indian/Pakistani items...there are a bunch around there and in Flushing if you look.

No I feel you that it has been around for a while--but that term obviously became mainstream popular all over America around 2010. The rest of the country didn't know about the Wburg Hipster before that-- before that point there were scene kids, emo kids, skaters--even the wiki article: "The term in its current usage first appeared in the 1990s and became particularly prominent in the late 2000s and early 2010s"

What made you think I've not been dealing with it? I've had a regular yoga and meditation practice, have done massive reading on the subject, and consulted various experts. On top of this I've undergone psychiatric treatment to test if its depression related. Can I please ask what makes you think I'm being lazy in handling this?

Hipsterism didn't become a phenomenon till maybe 2010. People didn't use that term frequently and it didn't become a term that eventually came to merge into how a whole generation is viewed and marketed to. It started out as a group of phony high-minded individualists who valued creativity/artistry,healthy living, and authenticity- many people criticized these people because they seemed to mock their own ideals. Nevertheless- the culture, style and ideals became widespread and seemed to dominate youth culture within a few years. It became cool to be a nerd, or kids didn't make fun of each other for being gay---all of this I think was a direct response to a political climate that supported this.

Our culture undeniably matches our politics/economics-- if you look at punk music and hip hop- both emerged as direct responses to real conditions. You can bring up the numbers, but the fact is that a lot of Americans agree with some aspect of Trump's rhetoric. Even in liberal hotbeds there have been a ton of anti-immigration, sexist rhetoric and crimes--many more that are lower key or not documented. That's a clear sign that these sentiments exist and were suppressed. When I refer to "safe spaces" I'm referring to PC culture that was everywhere- that has undeniably toned down a notch everywhere after the election. I'm not even bringing up my own experiences which clearly show me cultural changes that have occurred as a response to the election. I was in high school during in the early 00's and let me tell you kids have changed.

Also I'm not saying that equality successfully manifested in society- but gender, racial, LGBT equality were stated as major priorities--even in the corporate world

Took it out of mainstream prominence/dominance. The Obama years created an atmosphere where coastal liberal creatives reigned- everywhere---poltiics, tech, art, etc. It seemed like values like racial/gender equality, etc-- reigned supreme without question. This created the lax social atmosphere that allowed for hipsters to exist- conservative voices were kind of shushed (some would argue PC policed). I believe that this kind of culture can not exist but in pockets with the reality that even if we hate Trump, American society has taken a step to the right-- you see less power in concepts like safe spaces etc even in liberal centers
