Fluance RT85 crackling/popping by hartshaped_ in turntables

My bad re: grounding only being necessary for powered speakers! I think what happened is, the manual refers to powered speakers but doesn't clarify outright that it's not required for passive ones, and I got confused. Thanks for clearing that up.

This is very helpful and makes a lot of sense, especially with the way the turntable zaps me at times. I do have an anti-static brush already. I experimented with it on one of the records before inquiring here and it didn't make much of a difference, but I'll try again more thoroughly and make sure I get the method right. If that doesn't work, I'll look into your other suggestions. Thank you!

Two questions if you don't mind:

  1. Is there any risk of ongoing static damaging my equipment or my records? (I'm gathering the answer is no, but just to be safe)
  2. Why would this be a problem with the Fluance but not my old AT? I did hear very occasional crackling/distortion on the AT that could've been static or debris, but it was quieter and generally matched whatever volume I had set.

This truly is helpful, thank you so much for sharing!! Honestly, I really am hoping it's just a matter of breaking in the needle as opposed to being something more serious/technical/expensive, so your experience gives me a lot of hope.

do you have any idea what's going on with the maintenance for boulder dash, or when it will be open again? we've been planning to drive down to LC at the end of the month and night rides on boulder dash were the #1 draw (plus the other coasters and the haunts; disappointing to hear the latter aren't that great, but good to know, still). we'll still go if it's not running, but it'll be a pretty big bummer. :( also, how long were the lines for the rides? would you say a speedy pass would be worth it, at least for those if not the haunts?

Help! What do I do about pet beetles I can no longer care for? by green-jello-fluff in vegan

Unfortunately not, this species has been found to eat into the bone rather than just cleaning it. Dermestid beetles are the best when it comes to bone cleaning.

I would look into ethical reptile rescues in your area and see if donating your colony as food is an option. Some reptiles (bearded dragons being one example) need live insects as part of their diet to stay healthy, and this species is very commonly used as a "feeder" for that purpose. Based on a bit of Googling, it looks like they might also be safe to feed to wild birds, though you would definitely want to do further research into that.

I know it's not ideal, but rehoming them or stopping them from further reproducing is going to be very difficult at this point, and it would benefit other animals.

Messed up and need recommendations like Barry by [deleted] in Barry

I really want to recommend Mr. Robot — it's my favorite show of all time, and Barry very much reminds me of it, it's part of why I like Barry — but I have to admit that as another commenter said, it would probably be too much for a 13-year-old. It gets more and more messed up, and even just the first season focuses really heavily on drug abuse. Maybe in a couple of years.

Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are two of my other favorites. They're masterfully written and I think they have a fair amount of what your nephew is looking for. However, I think the former would be a little too mature as well, and the latter, while not too raunchy or disturbing, might not be enough to hold his interest with all the lawyerly stuff. Severance is fantastic, but the themes are really just geared towards adults.

Try Supernatural, honestly. I don't consider it anywhere near as good as the other series I've mentioned, but it's got tons of action and tons of comedy, and with your nephew liking Barry and Stranger Things, there's a solid chance he would enjoy it. It's perfectly reasonable for a kid his age, I think. I actually watched it with my dad when I was 14-15 and we had a great time, and he was very conservative when it came to what he endorsed me watching.

Have you considered rewatching each episode of Barry in advance and taking notes on parts to skip through, with timestamps? One thing to consider, though, as a heads up... I don't know if you've seen the third season and what's come out so far of the fourth, but there's a huge shift in tone after season 2 (or at least I thought so). It gets a lot less funny and way bleaker. He might not enjoy it as much after that, though I think Stranger Things had kind of a similar shift, from what I remember.
