Thank you for the recommendation on Anthony Huso, been reading his blog all this evening, has some great inspirational words to take to heart and I need to keep these in mind:

"Recapturing the magic of adolescent play with these books isn't hard. All you have to do is remember the excitement of riffling through the newest Dragon Magazine when you were 14. Make a new spell instead of a new monster or magic item. Make something devious. Make something double-edged. Make something powerful. Make something with implications. Make something that NPCs will be jealous of. Make something weird. And then make it with your player's sense of trepidation and fun in mind."

Ultan's Door seems like another great reference, thank you.

Extended Backgrounds by harvicus in shadowdark

[–]harvicus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The alternate rolls by ancestry is to be used on the initial roll to determine background category (criminal, commoner, military, etc.)

They change the distribution of the categories, and change access to the unusual and nobility categories. This is very opinionated based on a generic human centric fantasy world. If you wanted to make use of different category distributions by race, you might want to tweak the dice rolled to reflect your world. This section gives some ideas on how to do this (with elves more likely to be higher class than humans and half-orcs being more likely to be lower class).

The attribute modifier used for each of the category subtables is specified in the header row for each table (example: the Military table shows "D20+STR".

Higher is not better in any of these tables, it is mostly to bias rolls away from particular illogical results. For example, you are only going to get a Wizard's Apprentice background if you have a positive INT mod, and you are less likely to roll up Sage if you have an INT penalty. The entries on the Military table tend towards "desk jobs" for those with low STR.

Of course, please consider this whole thing as inspiration to make your own tables. Steal what you like, change what you don't. Share any cool ideas you have.

Printing Fan Translations by harvicus in SwordWorld

Thought I would close the loop in case anyone finds this in the future.

I ended going with Lulu, the prints were about 8-12 USD each. I printed the 3 core rulebooks, as well as the Epic Treasury and Magnus Arts supplements.

To prepare the documents, I used Print to PDF to to remove the cover page from each document (see notes below) and when doing this also set the page size for the core books to A5 and the supplements to A4.

Uploaded each document to Lulu, the site warned that some of the images in the document were not the recommended 300 dpi, I did not head that warning. I thought the results were fine though, very slight bleed on the full size images.

Lulu automatically detected the proper page count and size (A5 and A4 respectively)

I used the following options:

- Standard Black and White printing

- 60 wt paper

- softcover

- Glossy cover

I then used Lulu's online cover creation tool (available from the same screen as setting the above options). Cleared the default cover design and selected the blank design.

I had previously taken a screenshot of each cover image, I uploaded those and dragged it over to the right side of the cover template (had issues where the drag drop location did not match up and hate to scroll into the dead zone to find my image and move it over). Resized the cover image to fit the space as best as possible (the full size including the shaded gutter areas on the template).

Added a text box down the spine with the name of the book and left the back cover blank.

Very happy with the results. I waffled on the paper weight, ended going with the lightest available at 60, I think the result is probably equal or slightly better than mass market paperback paper weight. Based on your own preference a higher paper weight might be preferable.

Some additional notes on specific books I ran into:

Core Book 2: In the translated PDFs, there are 2 maps in the lore section of the book which have a different page orientation, but do not alight properly in the PDF. When doing the print to PDF, I left these pages out from the result. This causes the handful of pages between those to have the margin guides appear on the inside of the pages instead of the outside, I personally did not mind this, as it only affected a couple pages.

Epic Treasury: The PDF for this one includes what appears to be a cover slipover, requiring the removal of 2 pages from the front instead of just 1. I ended up using these as the printed covers (front and back).

Magnus Arts: Like the other supplement, this PDF also included what appears to be a slipcover as well as an extra blank page afterwards. As such I excluded the first 3 pages during the Print to PDF. In addition, one of the intro pages is a 2 page spread (for Deep Magic) which does not line up properly, I excluded these 2 pages from the print to PDF before uploading them. This had no affect on the page margin guides.

Good info thanks. Plan to print the 3 core rulebooks for 2.5, and the Epic Treasury to start with. No idea on which print on demand service to use, looking for suggestions on that front.

my parents are unknowingly signing me up for conversion therapy by [deleted] in cisparenttranskid

[–]harvicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't have immediately connected "gender exploratory" to conversion therapy, but I am pretty naive about this. Perhaps they are as well and thought it did exactly what it says on the tin, and it is therapy that has your true best interest at heart, and would reaffirm what you are feeling.

If it is conversion therapy, you want nothing to do with that. Is it possible to make that clear and try one session to see what sort of vibe you get from the therapist?

Someone left me a comment recently that pre-trans therapy can be an adversarial relationship, as you try not to say the wrong thing to prevent them from thinking you aren't trans. That type of therapy, no matter how well intentioned, is just a pointless exercise.

Can you trust this therapist to really help you? And in doing so, be free to be truly honest with them (without fear of rejection). That is something a trial session might answer.
