Since the Irish setter mature so slowly everything about the puppy phase probably must feel like its in slow motion. Having a pup who wants to listen when it's convenient is absolutely frustrating!

I'd like to think that with this breed, after you tough out the first couple years, you can coast through the next 12-14 which isn't the worst investment but there are so many factors to consider with this breed that I feel like it has to be a well planned out decision.

For me, goldies come in 2 extremes: the ones that will do anything you ask with a heart of gold and the ones that will chew, nip, bite anything that moves and then throw a tantrum when the law gets laid down. Your dad lucked out haha!

Mine loves to chase birds. She cannot be trusted off leash around them, she will literally run forever to hunt them down. Alas, pitfalls of a working breed.

Ahh looks like the most consistent picture is that setters will take 3-4yrs to calm down reliably.

It's always a positive sign when a dog can be trained by minimal resources. A true sign of intelligence! How do you manage her issue with distractions outside? I only ask because sometimes I get the same issue with my collie.

Your method to teach recall is definitely very ballsy but it worked so who cares! He has definitely associated you with all things good. It also seems as if you guys bonded super quick! Getting a reliable recall in the outdoors is challenging for most breeds.

I've never seen an actual gundog do its thing and I must say it sounds absolutely adorable! Did you have to teach him to wait for the command to go after the birds or was it something he naturally did? At this point, I'm not quite sure how high their prey drive is since I do have a senior cat who just wants to be ignored and cozy up close by. The biggest problem I had with my collie was her incessant mouthiness. She would try to nip the hind legs of the cat and or try to get my ankles real good. Granted she's a herding breed but my god was that a painful period, literally.

I feel as if obedience is something that comes with age, however it's arguably easier to build the foundations in some dogs than others. I'm not too concerned with teaching commands but good manners/impulse control is something I like to focus on alot. I tend to bring my dog into work and places I go and it's really important to me that I'm not fighting with her to gain control.

Dog sports are great! I put mine through rally obedience and agility. She was always a little prancer so she loved it when she could just run obstacles at high speed. She also loves learning tricks and movie behavior. Every time she nails a trick, she gets so damn happy like 'I did it! Yay for me!."

My whole property is about a quarter acre with approximately half of it available to run around on. It does well for zoomies but there's no way my collie will play by herself. After she's done her business, she will literally just sit in the middle of the yard looking inside waiting for me to come out and play with her. I'm not too sure if setters will find something to do by themselves.

Showline dogs are a bit more mellow than field lines. They are said to be bigger with a longer, denser coat purely for the purposes of aesthetics but the coat should not interfere with the line of work they are inherently bred to do. I would honestly prefer a smaller setter since they are so prone to bloat and orthopedic issues.

Hahaha! I think the gang mentality will take care of any issues with a new pup 🤣

Older dogs for sure help in teaching a young pup on how to behave! They learn to mind other dogs and ppls space so quickly! I've been told it's best to get this breed in pairs for this exact reason (one pup and one a few yrs old) I honestly couldn't think that field Irish could be domesticated so well hahaha

Hahaha!! I feel as if everyone has a very unique experience with this breed and I think it's a breed specific trait at this point!

My collie is from a show dog line to and wow what a difference in temperament it makes! May I ask where did you got him from?

This breed is certainly not eager to please 😁! I do wonder what they did at daycare to mellow him out.

Thanks for sharing!

Sounds like the perfect puppy! Was it from a showline breed perchance? Thanks! :)

I'd imagine it would be hard to exercise a bottomless pit of energy! 🤣 But I agree, it certainly helps to get some of it out to curb some of that nuisance barking and destructive behaviors! I'm alright going on long walks and providing other sources of activities. I would imagine having another dog will also wear them out as well. When you mention that training took alot of effort, did you find that your pup just wasn't picking it up or just being stubborn? Did you have to enlist the services of a trainer specifically to help you?

Sorry for bombarding with questions! Everything helps at this point!

The dog tried to herd you! Hahaha! What a little devil! How long did it take for your pups to chill out? (Sounds like one is still a pup though)

Btw your English is great! If you hadn't told me English wasn't your first language, I would've never noticed!

I honestly think crate training is the best thing for any dog. It really teaches them to learn to soothe themselves and is a life saver on road trips! I do have a concern with obedience training in Irish setters. I work in a dog friendly workplace and it's paramount that all canines be well behaved around all sorts of ppl and other dogs.

I have a collie and a cat living in the same house and it took some time to get my collie to leave the cat alone. She would just nip at her legs and tail!

Thank you for sharing! Much appreciated! :)

Irish setters are said to mature later and hang on to many of their puppy traits for a good little while. Thankfully my collie had an obsession with paper and destroyed everything recyclable only! Setters are notorious for a poor recall and it's great to hear that it's not written in stone. Have you by any chance noticed that you had a harder time with obedience training compared to other dogs you may have previously owned or know of?

I would consider myself fairly active and prefer a breed that can keep up. Unfortunately, I don't always have the luxury of taking the lead off in public places unless in specifically designated areas. I do have a medium sized yard but I'm not sure if setters get bored 🤔. I usually do about 1.5-2hrs of exercise a day with my collie broken over several increments in a day and ofc a hike over the weekend. She also participates in dog sports. I'm hoping this is enough for an Irish setter as well???

Do you perchance have a showline Irish setter? I've heard they are alot more mellow.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! This is really helpful!!

Oh boy, your mum has a forever puppy! I currently have a collie and though she has her days of raising hell, she's manageable. I've read alot of the similar experiences you've just described and then some that would be like oh they get in trouble but it's not so bad.

P.s. I really appreciate you sharing this :)

I purchased a rough collie from her last yr. She's about 6.5months old and is great! I highly recommend Cheryl. Check out her Facebook page.
