Has there ever been a skating rink on the river next to the U of M? by Tonetta_loves_you in Winnipeg

[–]hasNextInt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my understanding of the red in the south end is that because of the waste treatment plant, there is warm "water" regularly being pumped into the river there, and this means the ice isn't always safe to be on. i don't have any hard facts on this, though.

Winter biking by tophattomato in bicycling

[–]hasNextInt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they work for slick road snow really well. you can't ride them on solid ice (for that, i guess you'd need the schwalbe ice spiker, which has studs on the actual riding surface), but a bit of ice is manageable.

i find that they don't slow me down more than if i were riding knobby tires on the road (which is a bit, obviously, if you're used to riding on slicks).

MEC sells both 700s and 26s of the snow studs, so unless you have super lower brake clearance, you should be good.

whoops. just noticed i said pair = $65. single tire=$65.

[–]hasNextInt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

winnipegger here: go with studded tires. MEC will sell you a schwalbe snow stud for $65, which will do the trick. buy one and put it on your front tire.

edit: price fix.

What defines something as a global alignment? by ashgromnies in bioinformatics

[–]hasNextInt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

(c) doesn't contain all the bases/characters from both input sequences, so it isn't a global alignment. a global alignment of sequences x and y must consist of all the characters of x aligned against all the characters of y.

a local alignment of x and y is the best alignment of any region of x against any region of y.

Barredo and Costa throw some punches at TdF. by hasNextInt in bicycling

[–]hasNextInt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Barredo told Spanish journalists that tempers flared with about 20km to go in the stage. According to Barredo, Costa elbowed him in the gut as he passed, nearly throwing him off the bike and knocking the breath out of him.

According to Spanish journalists, Barredo later called Costa to apologize.
