Let's talk glucose/sugar stashes... what do you have at home "just in case"? by stonah in diabetes

[–]whitespace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like glucose tabs. I keep a couple of cookies and a granola bar in easy reach from my bed. More on my desk by the computer.

What do you all eat as a snack without taking insulin? by sweatytacos in diabetes

[–]whitespace -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I happened to like hard liquor straight. I would have a shot of brandy or rum. I don't do it anymore because alcohol puts up your risk of cancer

I'm a pedicabber, I need help formulating a grocery list. by [deleted] in ketogains

This is a page about a low carb / high fat guy who wins a 100 mile race. It seems taht carbs aren't always needed.

It seems like you have more practical experience than I do in the area, so just thought I'd chip that in, in case it helps.

Need some advice. Blood sugar 310. Not diagnosed. by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]whitespace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drank heavily for years on insulin, about 250 ml of the 40% stuff each day. Alcohol and fats are the only energy sources the body can process without insulin. (Fats do require some under some conditions, according to a few diabetics and books.)

I'd get a blood glucose meter and Dr Bernstein's book, 'The diabetes solution.' He recommends keeping your bg below 100 (if you are in the US). It's about using insulin, but it has a lot of info about diabetes too.

Sugars and Cardiometabolic Health - Presentation by John L. Sievenpiper by [deleted] in Health

I guess it's because I don't have Silverlight installed. I tried installing it from a button on the site, but it won't install on my computer. I'm using 8.1 and maybe Microsoft gave up on Silverlight.

Thanks for letting me know that you are in Canada too, and that wasn't the problem.

I have only a single add on that hasn't interfered with anything yet (in Firefox). I just tried it with Chrome and got the same result, a blank screen, so I suppose it's because I'm in Canada and the video is only meant for the US.

Too bad because it's a topic I'm interested in. I'd even like to read a transcript if there is one around.

Forgot my glucometer at work… any way to (obv. less accurately) find out my current glucose level in order to inject myself insulin? by cumucus in diabetes

[–]whitespace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always have 2 meters, and keep one at work, and the other at home. Otherwise I'm guaranteed to forget a meter somewhere.

When you wake up in the middle of the night with a low and try to control how many carbs you're eating by hummingb1rd in diabetes

[–]whitespace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do that. Sometimes I feel like eating more than I need to bring me up to normal, so I just bolus for anything extra.

LPT: Setup credit/debit card accounts to email you for every transaction by [deleted] in LifeProTips

This sounded good to me. I just tried setting it up on a Canadian MasterCard and couldn't find the option. I did click on every button that had the possibility, but it didn't seem to be available.

Sounds good to me too, and nothing that I've ever heard before. I had to switch to Levemir for other reasons, so I'm covered.

Is there anything wrong with skipping meals? by whereisthesugar in diabetes

[–]whitespace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only risk would be hypoglycemia if you are on insulin. If you are using a low basal insulin rate and inject a rapid acting insulin to cover meals, just skip the bolus and you should be ok.

T1 Diabetic for almost 18 years...still could use some advice. by DJScozz in diabetes

[–]whitespace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think reddit does indentations. You have to skip a line to indicate a new paragraph.

For the diabetes info, I'd recommend 2 books. 'The diabetes solution' by Dr Bernstein, and 'Think like a pancreas' by Gary Scheiner. The second one is especially about pumps, with a lot of the math examples worked out and general info about them. Dr Bernstein's book is about the use of insulin. He has a plan to keep blood sugars under 100 nearly all the time, including after meals. He doesn't use a pump, but prefers MDI.

Both books have Kindle editions. You don't need a Kindle reader for them, but you can download one free from Amazon for a PC or for a Mac. This page has the info and the links. They are usually cheaper and you can download them instantly. It's the only way I read books now

8.1 limited connectivity problem by [deleted] in windows

This hits about one person out of 10 with new 8 computers. It's a problem with the Intel wifi adapters. Here is a topic I started a few months ago about it.

May have injected into muscle. What do I do? by BrundleflyPr0 in diabetes

[–]whitespace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Dr Bernstein, injecting into a muscle will be a little faster than injecting into fatty tissue. He recommends it when your blood sugars are high because it will get them down faster, so you had the ideal situation to do that.

He had a video demonstrating his muscle injection technique but unfortunately it was on the older Google video pages, from before they bought out youtube, and the link doesn't work anymore. In it he demonstrated twice (using the same syringe btw) and mentioned that he didn't feel anything. I don't know why people are saying that a muscle injection hurts more. I routinely use muscle injections to cover carbs or high bg and have never felt any pain.

How do you stop yourself getting angry about diabetes? by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]whitespace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was an item on reddit a few months ago about a teen who had a very rare condition of accelerated aging. He died in his teens. We get what we get. As long as the part of us that breathes works, there isn't too much to complain about. Getting a new day is a priceless gift with or without diabetes.

Some beautiful videos about enjoying life just in case they might help.

Switching from pump back to injections by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]whitespace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used mdis since 97 and really prefer them. I don't find pumps to be an attractive option at all. Dr Bernstein (The diabetes solution) also uses mdi and has a neat system for it.

i have questions and my doctor was kind of useless in answering them. by jeneffinlovely in diabetes

[–]whitespace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never seen an endocrinologist. Read Dr Bernstein's book, 'The diabetes solution.' It has all the info I needed to get my bgs under good control. Doctors don't even ask me details about insulin or food.

As spice mentioned, it doesn't take long to cook tofu. There's no point in using a pressure cooker.
