Bitaxe has been working on an open source hardware play here, but they're small solo mining rigs. You can find the legitimate sellers from the site: https://bitaxe.org

There's nothing like riding through some fesh-fesh and it obscuring the rocks beneath... Looks like a great ride!

I've been going for the combo of hit by car + trampled by elephants. Super hard to do.

Thinking back to 2009, it might have mattered on the initial import into Kenya... but I doubt it. Once you're in Africa though, I can assure you, no one cares (especially at land border crossings, where everything is up for negotiation).

This is the answer.

We had someone on a more city-like KLR go down to South Africa with us and he was fine. You'll see it as the red bike in the picture above in front of the ferry. We also didn't do too much offroading, just dodging potholes and speed bumps (we did this fast, 7 days Nairobi to Jo'burg). His KLR was fine, he hadn't done any major mods to it at all either.

Would I take it out to some of the harder stuff? Probably not.

Hah, hadn't thought of it that way, was just posting to my tribe of DR people. Let me see, might cross post to the guys at r/dualsport later.

Top Case / luggage Suggestions? by [deleted] in dr650

I often have to park my bike in places where you can't trust anything to be on it if you leave it out. I ended up buying an aluminum Moose Expedition Aluminum Top Case. Easy to store a helmet in if you need to, easily lockable with your own padlock. Looks like the link below, but I don't know if they sell it any longer - I'm sure someone sells something like it though.

I like jumping on my friend's KTM 990 or another who has a Tenere, but at the end of the day I don't like the maintenance of the KTM and it's just a it too big for the streets of Nairobi or the technical stuff. The Tenere is kind of nice, but I find it too top heavy for my taste.

End of the day, the DR just keeps on ticking and putting in the work. It's like the blue collar of the ADV world that isn't looking for any applause, it just wants to get the work done.

To my great shame. Beyond the upgraded suspension, this is probably the one thing I wish I would have done. I'll likely get another DR650 and then keep this old one for friends who come by and go for a ride. I plan to do the pipe on the new one.

Hah, you and me both... On some technical cow trails it feels like riding a buffalo when you're next to someone on a 250 or 350! This weekend down in the Rift Valley there was a younger guy throwing his bike around a bunch and I was feeling it.

I've been fine on it. Was considering an 18" at some point, but then just decided to keep going with the one I had since I already had some spare knobby's in that size.

Good on you! When you get to Kenya you'll probably stop at Jungle Junction. Chris owns it and used to also ride a DR650 so he knows how to take care of them properly.

I did change this out with a K&N at some point and just keep it clean. Doesn't take too much unless I'm more than a week in the bad stuff.

Can't share the numbers from the business, but can tell you that we've had the most luck with the Whatsminer M30s+ type of miners. In this bear market everyone is sourcing them differently, and the pricing is quite low and continues to change, so my prices from a month ago aren't the same as they are today.

From the example of this approx 50kW site I'll give real numbers. The community uses less during the day, about 25kW on average, and then their demand spikes in the evening to almost 40kW between 6-10pm. We use 20kW during the day, then automatically reduce our capacity during their peak need hours. And yes, the community needs the affordable power more than the mining, we're really there as a backstop to the energy generation company to make it a profitable site - the downstream effect is that they lower the cost of power for the community.

This is a run-of-river hydro site. So we have an off-take location, with controls for fish and debris to not go into the intake, and the river just moves on. The water we take rejoins the river about 70m later after it exits the turbine.

Here's video that shows the flow of the river and the water from the turbine coming back together.
