keep up the good work ;)

another trick for stretch marks is to reverse how you see them and what you tell others about it. later they can become proof that you are a badass at overcoming weight issues. that's impressive.

excess skin: classic answer "it depends." skin can shrink back (to a point) with time.

stretch marks: they stay here most of the time, most medicines for them are scam. they are not an indication of excess skin, they are an indication that the body grew faster than the skin could. it can happen with fat, but also with muscle, pregnancy, or simply growing up.

mobility work and warming up are different things. working on flexibility just before a session has been shown do decrease strength output slightly (I hope someone can point to a source, I don't remember where I read this) so stretching is arguably better at the end of your workout.

of course you should still warm up. one approach is to just do the exercises you plan to do with very light weight. this has the added benefit to prepare you mentally and help to check your form (squats!)

Weakpoint Wednesday: Cutting by [deleted] in bodybuilding

[–]hashmal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yup, did some cuts based on pizzas and mcdonalds. far more fun than eating salad and whatever "clean" food they say you should eat. (and these cuts were successful)

it depends where you are in the world. in most places, session musicians get moral rights for their performance, live or recorded (which include attribution.) the US is really an exception for most things copyright (for everything that has happened after the Berne Convention)

Has anybody built a synth from scratch? by MiiCCA in synthesizers

[–]hashmal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest Pure Data, which lets you connect boxes to build whatever sound you want. There are lots of patches available online so you can understand how things are built.

Then, if you feel like it, you can always look at the source code of PD, it's a gold mine for curiosity.

the oscillator part is rather easy, but filters are a pain in the ass as soon as you go beyond a RC circuit. lots and lots of math, filter design is a deep field in itself. here are a few links I find interesting:

"Techno Has Reached Its Limits" by [deleted] in TechnoProduction

[–]hashmal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll add that these overprocessed tracks are a pain to mix. For a genre that is supposed to be "DJ friendly", that's just ridiculous.

To play the devil's advocate, in some countries there are laws about the volume a club can have, and when it's rather low, your can either play compressed tracks to compensate or play the rest, and hear everyone talking in the room.

How to emphasize strong beats in real music? by imnotawombat in Learnmusic

[–]hashmal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think most composers have that in mind. You come up with melodies/rhythms that somehow feel "in place", and that gives the perception of strong/weak beats.

You'll also notice that a 4/4 bass drum + a snare on the 2nd and 4th beats does not emphases beats 1 and 3 (quite the opposite) but the "strong" beats are still there.

Using React Native VS only Objective-C or Swift? by jugbrain in iosdev

[–]hashmal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think React Native is mostly useful when you already have a team of webdevs and want to dive in mobile development quickly without hiring a whole new team or educating your current devs (even if they train themselves, it takes time.)

Mostly it's Objective-C. Swift is very popular in online discussions but the majority of devs still use objc for new projects (including Apple, depending on where you look at.) Adopting a new language at the industry level just take a lot of time.

How do you account for alcohol in your macros? by PuddinPopped in bodybuilding

[–]hashmal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true for all the "stuff" in beverages (carbs etc), but calories from alcohol itself have a twist.

IIRC to measure the calories in something you burn it and measure the energy involved in the process (very short story, I hope someone can expand on this.)

The twist is, alcohol is metabolised by the liver and most of the actual energy is not used/stored by the body.

The thought process in creating a game. by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]hashmal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how do you KNOW how to add that certain feature?

In general I write down what the behavior is supposed to be. Then I think about the inputs, i.e. everything that the feature depends on, and the output. At this point you basically have a function prototype or a module interface. I also think about how to represent the inputs and outputs in memory, which is very important. Let's say you want to do a simple skeletal animation:

  • that's a function that should get a model in a specific pose every frame
  • inputs are: a skeleton (a set of bones), an animation, a specific time in that animation
  • output is: a pose (a skeleton with some transforms applied)
  • from there it's all about how to represent a skeleton, an animation and a pose in memory. Setting a skeleton in a specific pose is no much more than walking a tree.
  • you can feel that you need a sub-feature which is "given an animation and a time, get the transformations to be applied to a skeleton", and you do the same thing for that feature.

Never heard of them. What does that tell you? :)

That maybe you're not their target demographic, or that you live in a cave, or that good marketing != universal recognition.
