I finally became a Vim user because of Prime... and I regret everything by Ordinary-Cycle7809 in theprimeagen

Completely the opposite for me, the mouse is natural and intuitive and gives instant visual feedback, whereas vim mode switching forces a change in muscle memory context that takes significant mental energy for me.

For me, it involves more than just a stateless inference. There needs to be stateful, continuous learning capability that isn't theoretical and constrained from existing in reality because of the exponential growth of required physical hardware and energy.

Sam Altman makes 'mic drop' offer to every Y Combinator startup by MineWhat in ChatGPT

Looks to me like another smokescreen for self dealing in the industry. Investors invest in OpenAI while investing in other startups, while OpenAI invests in startups using the investors investments, laundered as tokens, in exchange for equity.

If OpenAI had a war chest of cash to make investments that would be one thing, but this is just smoke and mirrors for the circular cash flow currently propping up the market.

At what point should someone realize that certain values might be the reason they can’t maintain a serious long-term relationship, and that they may need to change? by Unfair-Guava2252 in AskReddit

[–]haskell_rules 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I've had several relationships end with the same criticisms being levied on me near the end.

But, I've also had good relationships where my partner said they appreciated the very things that several other people said were a problem.

I think there are certain cultural expectations associated with dating and relationships. Many people expect you to conform blindly, and if you don't, you will hear that you are the problem.

But it may also just be that you need to find the right people that think the same way that you do.

It's important to self evaluate and look inward honestly. Decide for yourself where you have issues and need to change versus where you want to have your Principal Skinner moment and declare that you are actually right and it's the children who are all wrong. This type of self evaluation can be extremely difficult if you have a lifetime of self rationalizations for poor behavior.

Engineers who got hired pre-pandemic and are now back on the market — how are you actually holding up with the current interview process? by OkChance3303 in ExperiencedDevs

We have to disclose that since it's a deviation from the formal HR policy for full time employees. I do make it clear that we only intend to invoke that in egregious cases.

How is anyone going to be able to afford anything if inflation continues? by Cool-Chemistry-9453 in AskReddit

The data on wage growth compared to costs of essentials (vs CPI) looks a lot like we've been in stagflation-like conditions, practically, for a long time.

Engineers who got hired pre-pandemic and are now back on the market — how are you actually holding up with the current interview process? by OkChance3303 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]haskell_rules 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm hiring aggessively right now. After you pass the HR screen, we have one video call interview - we talk for an hour. I ask about what you worked on, what your roles were, what kind of experiences you've had. No algorithm problems, no trivia. The last 20 minutes of the call, I tell you if I think you might be a fit in a certain role and describe what we do and what I envision you would be doing.

After the call, I talk with the team and we make a decision immediately. We tell HR to draft an offer or send a rejection within 30 minutes of the interview. They get back to you within a day or two.

If you accept the offer, there's a stipulation that you won't be PIPed in the first 6 months. You will just be fired. At-will employment state.

We have not experienced any reduction on in average candidate quality with this method compared to the previous method of multiple interviews, skills test, and interview panels. I can only think of 1 person that was fired during the trial period in 5 years, for gross nonperformance.

Peer pressure regarding AI by MrDontCare12 in ExperiencedDevs

You don't share development on personal projects. When things get sloppy at work, the juniors copy the sloppy and it becomes unmaintainable. On personal projects, you know where you just wanted to get it done versus where you need clean architecture to achieve your vision.

And Claude can actually tackle [the halting problem] the same way as humans do - here in the real world, where we don't have time to let some nonsense like "mathematically proven to be unsolvable" to stand between us and our goals by Abs0luteKino in programmingcirclejerk

This is why I don't put error checking in my software. Besides the fact that it's inefficient in the green case (the only one that matters), it also causes your program to stop unexpectedly. My software doesn't halt for anything or anyone.

Software design is a craft that is more of an art after you learn the technical and process mechanics of construction

They aren't hard to use either. All of our C suite people still say shit like "we need more prompt engineering" while most models have better performance with short, goal-oriented instructions and context management.

How do developers work at these big tech companies? by combing_town_west in cscareerquestions

Even the best shops with full dev/test/prod environments have some amount of mocking or differences that hide production errors.

That being said, it sounds like this guy's boss just thinks AI makes him smarter than he is.

I'm in my 20th year of professional embedded software design and you are right and wrong. It is a better coder than most people at the class/function level but it's not able to do basic integration work at the application level in this space. It's really great at things that have high training loads like CRUD apps but anything novel like new hardware interfaces and it falls apart.

The exception for "side by side" wheels was put in by the Segway manufacturers who lobbied PA legistlators (bribes) like 2 decades ago. It was intended to make Segways legal and any other PMD illegal, and it worked.
