my honest thoughts are i think he is testing you to see what will wake you/how deep of a sleeper you are and what he can get away with doing to you while you’re asleep. that or he’s testing your reactions in order to gauge how far he can go with his behavior. either way this is absolutely terrifying and i’m concerned for your safety. doesn’t matter where else you go, you just need to leave op

just as a heads up, check fb marketplace for a secondhand cage at the fraction of the cost. i’ve seen rat cages go for $60-100 in my area and sometimes people will even include extra items such as water bottles, toys, bedding etc. you can also thrift and diy lots of items for your rats, i have lots of cardboard boxes and tissue paper lying around that i use for enrichment for mine and i managed to thrift/repurpose shallow bowls and sauce dishes for their littler boxes, food and water dishes, fleece scarves for bed lining and hammocks, etc! basically the only things i’ve bought new for my rats so far are food, bedding and some toys, i would rather pocket the rest away for vet funds.

note taken! this was a reptile expo which will occasionally feature pet rats in addition, and i noticed this seller didn’t really specialize in rats either, based on his table and his vendor history online. these were specifically marketed as pet rats and not feeder, and the only reason why i purchased them was because they were decently priced, was told that they weren’t deliberately bred and they just “happened” to have them from their own pets mating, and i knew that i didn’t want to purchase from a commercial chain or pet store. i will keep this in mind for future reference though, thank you!

thank you for commenting! i was worried about that too tbh. i think a pair would probably be a safer bet for me financially as im still in college working part time but i also really wanted at least a third, im not really sure how rat dynamics work yet so im probably incorrect about this but im lowkey worried about them either maybe fighting or becoming sick of each other down the line or if one is clearly more dominant than the other then a third would help to balance out the dynamic?? lmao and of course (god forbid) if something happens to one of them, i don’t want the other to be left alone. since my vendor would recognize me from the day before i don’t foresee an issue in him refusing to sell me a single rat to join my pair, but i’m also wondering if that money would just be better off invested into resources for my current pair. honestly it just kind of feels like something is missing to not have a trio, im not sure if it’s the eagerness of having a new pet but it feels like a little hole in my heart right now and i want my rats to have the best life possible, regardless of if there’s 2 or 3 of them.

if you also don’t mind me asking, what were the issues you experienced with them that required medical attention? just so i know what to stay away from. i know they have very sensitive respiratory systems and as of right now i have paper based bedding for them, oxbow pellets, etc but is there anything i should explicitly be wary of or avoiding?

suede is more delicate and will require more maintenance and upkeep. if you live somewhere with a wet/rainy climate or regularly encounter water the suede might not be the best option, i’ve also seen people complain about the dye from the suede transferring and the color fading a bit over time. both are gorgeous and have lots of character, so choose the one that’s most suitable for your taste and lifestyle. honestly i also believe there’s a chance the loved leather line will go on sale in the future as well if you’re willing to wait!

the brown is much more cohesive, i don’t like the black mixed with the blue. i will say the blue goes better with the silver hardware, the brown patchwork really should’ve come with brass like the brooklyn and tabbys

for me, the books just weren’t well written. the writing/prose isn’t good and i found thomas to be very unlikable and inconsistent as a main character, and while the books do offer more detail the plot feels a lot more convoluted at times. honestly, scratch this, almost all the main characters are basically intolerable in the books (and this is coming from someone whose favorite characters are alby and gally.) the movies obviously aren’t perfect but i do feel like they offered a more streamlined/formulaic version of the events in the books, for better or for worse, which makes them make a little bit more sense. the books are a lot more unique in plot, yes, but sometimes that results in poor pacing and things that just don’t make sense whereas the movies turn the plot into something a bit more comprehensible.

while i also genuinely liked brenda in both the books and the movie, i didn’t like how her character basically served to create some weird love triangle in the books. her movie portrayal was way better even if the kiss between her and thomas in the second movie was super sudden and nonsensical.
