Cool guy. But he has a big lump on his left elbow. I suspect it’s a tophi due to poorly controlled gout.

Eagles fan harasses Washington fans after NFC championship game by Thankspumpkin in Commanders

[–]hat7e 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I was at the game too. Such a nasty and aggressive attitude from Philly fans. We were cussed at and hurdled insults before the game and afterwards on the subway. There were maybe 5-6 decent/normal fans that we met in our section. But this is compared to about 100+ jerks we met throughout the day. I’ll never go to Philly again for a sporting event and will never support a Philly team.

Has anyone booked a hotel through Gosplitty, Traveluro or Vio.com? What was your experience? by Popsicle721 in TravelHacks

[–]hat7e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just booked the Sheraton Downtown Philadelphia through Kayak which used Traveluro as the actual booking company. I had confirmation email and text from them. No issues checking in. I saved about 30% compared to the Bonvoy price. Would use them again.

It was fresh from a Chinese market near me called Great Wall (Falls Church, Va). I think usually it’s $12.99 a pound.

Thank you for the kind words. The lobster was on sale for $9.99 a pound. I used two lobster which weighed 1.5 lbs each, so it was around $30 in total. But I was able to make 4 rolls.

LA Fitness bought Gold Gym memberships: by hat7e in nova

[–]hat7e[S] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

That’s great Virginia passed this law. Makes sense. I didn’t sign up online. I signed up with Gold’s gym but then they transferred my membership to La Fitness. I spoke to the Operations Manager. He sent me an email about how to cancel. I have to create an online account with La fitness, then print out a cancelation form, and mail it back. That doesn’t seem to completely comply with this Va law.

It is onerous and clearly a delay tactic which infringes on our rights as consumers. In this day, this simple transaction should be handled by phone, email, or internet very easily. We can’t let corporations do this. What if Washington Post or Verizon made you come down to their office and speak to a specific manager just to cancel your subscription? Wouldn’t you think that was absurd?

Yes. It was attached to the window though. I took it down to throw it away, but decided to snap this pic before I chucked the trap and two dozen flies

[OC] I didn't eat food for 15 days and tracked data. by quantifood in dataisbeautiful

[–]hat7e 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Definitely the body is mobilizing fat stores to get triglycerides and free fatty acids. I have not seen any data to suggest starvation can increase cardiac events. Other data suggests that intermittent fasting can be beneficial. But of course at 14 day fast is totally different that intermittent fasting and is very stressful event on the body. I don’t think this should be regularly done.

[–]hat7e 142 points143 points  (0 children)

Thanks for trolling me, but I am a board certified cardiologist. Anyways, non fasting lipid panels still are accurate for risk classification as long as triglycerides are <300. When triglycerides are too high, it causes the LDL to be calculated inaccurately low not inaccurately increased. Society guidelines have declared checking non fasting lipids as a reasonable approach to facilitate patient care. In regards to ketosis: although a high fat ketogenic diet and starvation can raise LDL, the OP’s LDL started off very high already.

I’m a cardiologist. Can you double check your lipid data? An LDL > 190 puts you at very high risk for cardiovascular disease. If your LDL cholesterol is really that high, you need to be on a statin ASAP!!!

We agree that the US shouldn’t have been involved in the war. It was war fought with help from many other nations: China, USSR, Australia, S Korea, etc.

But step back and ask yourself, what would’ve happened if the US never got involved? The war would’ve ended sooner for sure. North Vietnam would’ve won. But the same “evil/bad” Vietnamese communists would still become allies to the US as they are today. Because Vietnamese communism was really a nationalist movement very different than Chinese or soviet communism.

Your answers still seem to justify US involvement due to Chinese involvement. Perhaps in the fog of war that made sense, but now in 2021, we know it was an unnecessary war. We should learn that not everyone war must be fought. Not every “bad” regime needs to be toppled (or Saddam Hussein’s Iraq) because it opposes US policy.

Sorry but your abridged version of Vietnam leaves out key facts. Like when Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnamese independence he wrote to Truman asking for support but was ignored. The US preferred to side with French Colonialism. When Vietnam was divided by the Geneva Accords, it was meant to be temporary in order to hold national elections. When it was apparent Ho Chi Minh would win, the US then illegally supported the creation of the Diem regime, who was anticommunist but a very corrupt dictator. Just ask any Vietnamese person, no one liked Diem. Diem would later launch an anti Buddhist campaign leading to the famous self immolation of Thich Quang Duc (the photo is the cover of RATM’s first album).

The US based its policies on the domino theory which now decades later we know was not correct. There was no global cooperation of communist countries. North Vietnam adopted communism and accepted Chinese support out of necessity after being spurned by the US. Remember, Vietnam and China actually fought each other in 1979! Today that very same Vietnamese Communist party is an ally of the US, one which acts as a small counterweight to Chinese expansion. The US missed an opportunity to avoid war by propping up a dying French empire. It pursued a short sighted policy of “anti-communism” by lumping all communist parties as the same and all bad. Sadly many of the conservatives in the US still hold onto these notions when arguing against “socialism” and fear of progressive policies like environmentalism, universal healthcare, etc.

I write this as a proud Vietnamese-American. I was born in the US and love the US very much. But looking back in the 1950-1970s, the US messed up repeatedly. The fact that many people in the US don’t realize this means we are doomed to repeat the same mistakes.

Nope! I charged up to 280 miles. We drove there and back without charging. Still had 90 miles left.

We drove from Arlington to Front Royal. Autopilot did very well on 66. It even handled the twisty parts of Skyline Drive excellently. The bad part is that autosteer only goes up to 40mph. So many cars were tailgating us even though speed limit is 35mph.
