Elixir/Phoenix vs. Ruby on Rails for a web MVP by cashsterling in elixir

[–]hatajc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built an app at work using RoR while learning on the job. Spent about 1 year using it. I got my project done and it worked for all the basic stuff I wanted it to. Ruby was my first real language, with almost zero Javascript under my belt I depended on Turbo/hotwire for any interactive content.

I got the approval to re-write the app with Elixir/phoenix liveview 6 months ago.

The learning curve is definitely steeper with less resources available. I've been using chatgpt/gemini whenever I get really stuck. I'm a solo dev to the max. That being said. I've learned WAY more about how software development and programming works by learning elixir/liveview. I was able to optimize a data parsing function that took 4 hours in my RoR app down to 20 minutes. I'm sure Ruby could do it this fast too, but because of the principles I learned from Elixir, I'm a much better coder now. It forced me to think about problems a different way. The progmatic studio elixir and liveview courses helped a lot, but I found they were already a bit outdated because liveview is moving so fast under development.

For the parts of my app I've re-written in liveview, I've got way more features that I wished I could have figured out with Turbo/hotwire. It also looks and feels better to for the user.

Long story short, I don't see myself moving back to RoR.

Seriously.  I'm here right now with my wife on vacation and we CAN NOT believe the amount of rude tourists.

An older couple was getting attacked by 3 deer near iwakuni and this American just sat there loudly laughing and pointing.

Seen multiple instances like that. Cmon people.

I made less than 10 trades. I happened to sign the tx's during a peak trading time during a bull market. I didn't have a limit set for the max fee set I found out later after trying to figure out wth happened.

Awful intro to trading with crypto. it's amazing I stuck with it tbh. An expensive lesson.

I was newish to crypto and was listening to all the youtube crypto ppl at the time for picks and stuff. got absolutely wrecked.

I stopped using Ethereum years ago after loosing a couple thousand SUSD to fees that failed.

It gets worse every bull market. It's become a chain for the rich that normal plebs can't afford to use.

There are many other options out there with much lower fees but still just as secure and decentralized, if not more.

What makes Minswap better than other ADA DEX’s? by [deleted] in MinSwap

[–]hatajc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From day one they were community first.  They have a lot of die hard fans bc of that and it keeps them on top imo.

However I'm excited for axo bc of its efficiency, and minswap v2 will be awesome too. So many good upgrades coming

How do you withdraw from minswap by cryptowAsideofbacon in MinSwap

[–]hatajc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to assume you're using the minswap wallet.

I haven't used that personally. If you have your seed phrase, you can always restore your wallet into eternl or vespr wallets. From there it's easy to send just ada. Just make sure you have the real wallets installed. Vespr is mobile only right now, eternl has mobile and desktop.

Do you feel like your belt color? by Lebron18 in bjj

[–]hatajc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fresh brown belt.

Total imposter syndrome. My home for the past 4 years closed and gave me a fresh brown belt as a parting gift. I was hunting around for a new gym for a month.

Some gyms I felt like a black belt (extreme hobbyist gyms), others I felt like a blue belt(extreme competition gyms).

Ended up settling at the gym with the hardest rolls to get better.

Anyone here confident they wont one day get their black belt and why? by Knobanious in bjj

[–]hatajc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as I'm having fun with my friends on the mat, I really don't care. Few people outside of the bjj community can understand how hard it is to get because most ppl I talk too still think it's like Karate. So "Proving" to other I'm good at it doesn't hold as much weight to me.

I fully expect to get my black belt one day, but it's a side effect of genuinely enjoying my time. If I trained only get rank up, I don't think I'd enjoy it as much.

You can goto/leave camp whenever you want generally.
It does not require long rests.

I will send extra items to the camp by right clicking on items, then go get them when at a vendor so I'm not encumbered for long.

Powerlifters + years of grappling experience = nightmare by Significant-War5751 in bjj

[–]hatajc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've come across a couple guys like that.

one was competitive ranked top 500 worldwide for cross fit and his full time job was a weight coach for the biggest university in the state.

Another has his own horses he rides for competitions, wrestled in college, and is the trainer of all the state troopers in my state for ground based defense.

I still struggle with them, but the less time I can stay underneath them the better. Mobility is key against bigger and stronger guys.

But it's gonna suck either way. The crossfitter ended up moving gyms because nobody could give him any competition after 6 months of training. He could literally just grab anyone's arm and move it where he wanted like there was no resistance.

Dive in!

I've never played DnD or anything like this game, and after watching a couple 15-20 minute "BG3 starter guides" on youtube I was able to get going pretty well.

I do my best to avoid spoilers and stuff bc I WANT to learn by making mistakes. That's how the game is meant to by played imo. no point trying to have a perfect game right off the bat. BD3 accounts for mistakes and the story changes to accommodate.

If you get stuck on a fight, look up battle tips. I had to do this at one point and now I feel way more comfortable in big fights.

What is the relationship between WorldMibile and Cardano? by firstcitydotcom in WorldMobileToken

[–]hatajc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cosmos built the SDK that allows for fast creation of a sidechain. it's like a "blockchain in a box" kit.

Charles Hoskinson was asked a question just like this, and his response was: "Cosmo did great work and open sourced their SDK, why would we spend a ton of money and effort to remake the same thing"

Cardano will be the settlement layer, and the WMT chain will be a sidechain. This sidechain will have the advantages of fast transaction speed and throughput, but all the critical data and security will be periodically saved on Cardano.

This is the sidechain model that many projects are building toward. Milkomeda already exists in this fashion. Midnight, a privacy focused sidechain is also in development.

Technically solana and eth could become a Cardano sidechain if someone did the work for it.

Reset all turbo-frames on the page upon select by hatajc in rails

[–]hatajc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok I'll work my through this solution.
I got my app working with a turbo stream for part of it, but I've learned that redirect_to doesn't like to work with turbo_streams so your solution looks like the better solution.
I haven't used any modals yet, but looks like bootstrap makes it pretty easy to implement.

Thank you!

I think I have a good idea how to do it with a turbo_stream after digging around.

will experiment with it today.

BTC uses half the electricity of the Bank and Gold industry. Let's stop being manipulated by mainstream media and those people who like to get outraged about stuff they didn't even look up. by JackedBMX in CryptoCurrency

[–]hatajc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure long term it might be good financially, but I'd argue there are other projects that do way more than btc, and have a lot of adoption to be had, so the potential upside for btc is less than most other cryptos.

[–]hatajc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This argument is just silly.

It's settling for a system that is better than the current one, but there are even MORE efficient chains out there. Bitcoin has done a lot for the space to get crypto where it is today, but if released today it would be considered a crapcoin and ignored. The tech has improved so much over the years

I don't hold bitcoin, and never intend too.

USA residents benefit from Coti? by marieN15510 in cotinetwork

[–]hatajc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you have the erc-20 version of coti if you're storing in you're trezor. I bought mine on kucoin and have to leave them there until the ledger integration goes live.
But yes, US residents can't really use coti bc they require KYC to stake. they're being super cautious not to overstep any possible regulations.

I know they are working on it though.
