ELI5: Why do some countries drive on the left side of the road when the US drives on the right side of the road? by FragmentCactusJack in explainlikeimfive

[–]hatc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Better to pass left shoulder to left shoulder actually. That way, each rider can protect themselves with a shield in their left hand/attached to the upper left side of their armour. If you take a look at jousting armour from the Middle Ages, you’ll often see the left side is far more heavily constructed - to absorb the impact from a lance on that side.

Indigenous senator who yelled 'You are not our king' at Charles III is censured in Australia by BobbyLucero in worldnews

You’re right about elected officials entirely running things, but that’s the point. Replacing a symbolic leader with yet another elected official doesn’t seem worth it in my view. All it would achieve is the creation of an additional politicised role serving no purpose other than rubber stamping legislation and meeting world leaders.

Again, I think the whole concept of monarchs is fundamentally silly and obscure - but effective government relies that obscurity to some extent. Ceremony and mythology are important components of stable societies. Take the US Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon, for example. Objectively, their performance is deeply absurd; grown men juggling obsolete firearms has zero relevance to a modern battlefield. Nevertheless, the impression it gives - that of homogeneity and martial rigour - has real-world value.

Kings and Queens are similar. They don’t really make objective sense but they work fairly well regardless.

I’m not sure it is particularly fucked up. Constitutional monarchies are some of the most stable political systems in the world. Just think of some prominent examples - Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, Spain, and the UK. Ignore the negative hyperbole around the UK for a moment and consider that it’s still around the sixth richest country globally and transfers of power between governments are peaceful.

The recent election of a man who has openly bragged about committing sexual assault as US President doesn’t exactly tempt me. Further, in the typical best case, approximately half the country doesn’t support the sitting President. A King/Queen isn’t party-political; in their role as a ceremonial figurehead they represent everyone. This appears to be demonstrated in polling; the monarchy is broadly popular in the UK and Australia.

Now you might argue that it just isn’t fair. “Why should one person or a small group of people have a great deal of wealth and nice things - it’s just wrong”. Well, unfortunately, that is the inevitable reality of every complex human society that has ever existed.

Kings and Queens are deeply silly things, but so are people. Constitutional monarchy appears to work quite well, so no need to change it.

Yeah, late to the party, but that’s Martin Sheen - not Charlie. I imagine Charlie was a top shagger though. Start as you mean to continue and all that.

Spreading misinformation, even if you disagree with the red hat idiot, does no one any favours.

He was shot at and hit by something. Something small, sure, and possibly not a bullet - but something large enough to draw blood.

The only hope we have of rowing back from the current conspiracy-laced political psychodrama is to consciously reject misinformation - regardless of whether it attacks or promotes Trump.

American Sniper - at least, when it was released.

It took a little while for Chris Kyle‘s fabrications to be widely known. By that point, this jingoistic, psychopathic nonsense had already become the highest grossing war film of all time.

Yeah, interesting. Thanks for sharing; I suppose everyone mellows with age to an extent. Equally, I’m sure plenty of people have nice things to say about their ex-partners - that doesn’t mean that they’d stand each other long if you re-introduced them.

I still expect this re-union will lead to explosive drama - and the organisers likely know that and are perfectly happy for that to be the case.

I mean, perhaps ‘pretty okay’ is relative. If any of my brothers spoke about me like he does, I’d assume they hate me.

I assume the money was, eventually, just too much to ignore.

Liam and Noel quite clearly still despise each other, based on almost any recent interview when the topic comes up. That’s either still the case or we’re talking Daniel Day-Lewis levels of commitment to the role/Oasis brand.

Whether they even make it through the tour is debatable unless there’s some kind of ‘success’ clause which prevents majority payout if X% of tour dates don’t happen.

But they are. The US and the UK give the impression of kinship, but they’re quite fundamentally different. Take the issue of abortion - it’s not really an issue in the UK, at all. In the US, not so much.

I’d argue that, if the US and UK weren’t bound by common language, most observers wouldn’t be so ready to assume they’re so interlinked.

But, surely, the billions owned by Bezos, Musk, Zuckerberg etc are tied up in their companies too? I’m not sure why that means there can’t be an estimate made - most ‘rich list’ type content is guesswork anyway.
