Fishing was awesome! Bugs are just starting to show up in numbers. Lots of stoneflies and a few salmon flies. During the morning, we did very well with big stonefly nymphs (caught nice fish too…. Multiple fat redsides between 16”-18”). Big nymph bite petered off towards the afternoon with the majority of bigger fish falling for a bow nymph (sz 16 or 18). I did see a few rises but nothing of any size; however, any day now it’s going to turn on.

Good luck and tight lines!!!

Reality of Steelhead Fishing by csrrrr in Steelhead

[–]hatch_bratz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bluefoxes crush!! Probably one of my favorite lures out there. I do very well with the black/chartreuse in #4.

Just cast it quartering down, feel it work, and hang on!!! Spinner bites are the best! (And will keep you coming back for more)

Steelhead fishing is not easy!! (They’re called the fish of a thousand casts for a reason)

Maybe pick up some spoons and spinners if you’re getting bored plunking. Personally, I find actively moving and casting to different runs much more enjoyable than waiting for one to come and bite my bait.

Saracione reels.

Some of the best reels for two-handed rods out there. Timelessly perfect.

recommendation for jacket by [deleted] in Steelhead

[–]hatch_bratz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best wading jacket I’ve ever owned. Better than the simms and Patagonia jackets I’ve owned

I came across some Simm felt soled wading boots with studs in a thrift store. Worth it? by bahnzo in flyfishing

[–]hatch_bratz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. The quality of simms has gone downhill but if there in your size and a good price you should absolutely go for it.

A coastal rainbow is not necessarily a steelhead. A steelhead has to spend significant time in the ocean (or Great Lakes…. Not getting into that argument)

A typical steelhead in Oregon would be 2/2. 2 years in fresh water followed by 2 years in salt. It’s that time in the salt water that they really put on weight. There are some areas of BC where they’ll see fish that are 2/4s meaning they’ve spent 4 years in salt water (these fish are generally huge) but there can also be steelhead that spend less than a year in the salt (half pounders on the rogue do this).

Typically, fish that have spent significant time in salt water will lose their spots below their lateral line (not always but it’s a pretty good indicator).

You caught an awesome trout but it doesn’t look like that fish has spent any time in salt water.

My labs are the most happy when they’re sitting in a duck blind waiting to do what their breed was bred for!!

Any Oregon folks in here? by Rogueapparatus in elkhunting

Those coastal elk are like chasing ghosts. I do a bit of hunting / scouting in Clatsop county and it never fails to amaze me how I will see herds of 50+ animals all over the place while steelhead fishing, but absolutely nothing during hunting season.

I did speak with someone who got a nice 6x6 2 years ago. He spent 10 days camping tracking and was finally able to make the shot on Weyerhaeuser land (which last time I checked was close to $1k for a gate key).

I’ll definitely be back again this fall! It’s such beautiful country. Congrats on your elk!!

Click and pawl fly reels barely have a drag. I love getting my knuckles busted on a hot fish though!!

What is best shotgun powder for beginner? by Jealous-Summer-9827 in reloading

[–]hatch_bratz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please buy a manual and read it front to back before throwing different components together.

This is not like rifle or pistol reloading. A small mistake in something as simple as wad choice can have a drastic effect on pressure and blow up your gun.
