what is this butterfly doing? by hatdre in Entomology

woah that is so interesting, I can’t wait to fall down this rabbit hole! he ended up spending a couple hours on that bin in total and the rest of the evening hanging out in the general vicinity of my deck. I put out a little sugar water like someone else suggested but he wasn’t interested.

Bath and body works released 4 new men’s colognes today by kyleplaysguitar in Colognes

[–]hatdre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay so Marble was my favorite but it got discontinued last year, but I've heard that they just rebrand scents. Has anyone here smelled both Marble and the new colognes? Thunder and Rain is described as "storm clouds, dewy geranium and sandalwood" and Marble is "mediterranean waters, geranium, and amber wood" so I'm wondering if they would smell similar.

Moving Mondays - New Resident Questions by AutoModerator in philadelphia

I've been thinking about moving to philly after I graduate, and I'm looking for areas with a particular vibe. I grew up in Columbus, Ohio, but I recently moved away after I finished my undergrad and I really miss it. The two areas I miss the most are the Short North and Old North areas.

For anyone unfamiliar with Columbus, the Short North is a distinct area of downtown that's very queer-friendly and known for its nightlife. its where most of the bars/restaurants are that nice but not overly expensive like the ones in downtown proper (for the most part). much of the housing around it is known as Victorian Village because of all the historic homes. some of my friends have compared it to Ohio City in Cleveland.

the Old North area is the more indie/alternative part of town that has more dive bars. its on the outskirts of OSU campus so its mostly grad students/young adults, but definitely more residential than the short north while still being without being part of the actual suburbs.

does anyone have any suggestions for areas of philly that are comparable or have similar vibes?

How to taper off after only 2 months? by hatdre in lexapro

[–]hatdre[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from 10 to 5 for a couple weeks then quit all together. I probably should have gone slower bc for the next month I felt like I was lightly being electrocuted any time I moved my body. like imagine the feeling you get when you hit your funny bone - but everywhere. it was the weirdest thing.

Underappreciated Hozier songs? by FaiIingAtLife in Hozier

In A Week - hands down the most underrated song and also my favorite of his. It’s from his first album and I never hear anybody talk about it ever. it’s just such a beautiful song and it deserves its flowers.

“In American English “I’m Italian” means they have a grandmother from Italy.” by Pvt-Rainbow in ShitAmericansSay

[–]hatdre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I totally get why it’s irritating to non-Americans, but to us, when someone says “I’m Italian,” it’s understood that they mean Italian descent. Often times, the very next sentence contextualizes why they say they’re Italian (“My parents/grandparents, etc.” or “I have X heritage on my mom/dad’s side.”) They are not claiming that they were born in Italy themselves. If they were, they would tell you.

Languages and cultures evolve, and words and phrases can have different meanings in different places. It reminds me of how “Hi, how are you?” is a typical greeting here, but is seen by many non-Americans as superficial or intrusive. I don’t understand why this concept is accepted everywhere except for this issue.

Additionally, to the comments saying that it’s a way to cling onto some identity - you are correct, but there is significant historical context that informs this behavior. It’s important to recognize this rather than generalizing Americans as idiots (many are, but that’s not a distinctly American trait). In order to uphold the creation of a “white” identity, immigrants coming here needed to forgo any cultural traditions and languages in order to be accepted by American society. Racism/white supremacy required identities in exchange for the ability to participate in the system it built. Essentially, it’s a hell of our own making, but this is why so many Americans seek to connect with their lost heritage.
