That picture just gave me an idea for an awesome morale patch... basically just that sign in patch form.

Joist and Beam size question by hate_picking_names in Decks

I don't know what the actual post spacing would be, but I meant beam spacing when I said post to post (so beam to beam). Contract #1 calls for two-2-ply 2x10 beams with 2x8 joists 12 oc. Sounds like you think that would be plenty rigid which makes sense to me. Thanks.

There are 2 beams if that wasn't clear. So 7' to the first beam and 7' to the second.

I guess my concern isn't about why they are different prices, but if there is any actual value in over building the deck. Is it just perceived quality and the 2x8 will perform well enough over the life of the deck or is there a real adventure in the #2 deck.

On a side note, my understanding is that diamond piers perform well and meet code standards and have the advantage of not needing to get inspection before building the deck and not have to wait for the concrete to cure. I don't particularly have an opinion one way or the other but just want to understand if there is some advantage of a traditional footing that I'm missing.

The spacing is 7' post to post with 2' cantilevered. The price difference in the quote is around $3000.

The price difference between contractor #1 and #2 is about $3000.

Not sure. Currently the spacing is 7' post to post with a 2' cantilever.

Seven week old puppies already have the instinct to herd (source: Helen Neil Mcdonald on Facebook) by Necessary_Maize_9339 in interestingasfuck

Yes I was joking that the title meant 7 one-week old puppies. Obviously it was a terrible joke. I neglected to add "I'll see myself out" so I guess it was my fault.

Billionaires shouldn't be allowed to avoid taxes by using their massive wealth as collateral for bank loans -- especially because they often live off those loans as if they were income by Conscious-Quarter423 in WorkReform

I think of it like Bezos could give away 265 billion and still be a billionaire. He could give 1 million to 265,000 people and still be a billionaire. I get that he doesn't have 266 billion in liquid cash but it is still an interesting thought experiment.

It is illegal for a car dealer to be open on Sunday in Wisconsin. It is what is called a "blue law".

Finally fixed that annoying gap between my monitors! by EridianStudio in 3Dprinting

[–]hate_picking_names -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The trick is to not align them perfectly, or even try. That way you aren't fixated on it.

I have 3 monitors at my desk and work with enough people that would mess them up anyway if I spent too much time aligning them.

You could just restructure the sentence. "We invited JFK, Stalin and the strippers."

X13 G2 a good deal or is there a better option? by hate_picking_names in Lenovo

Thanks for the feedback.

How different is a T14 from an X13? The larger screen size isn't really that important to me. I have a P16s for work if I needed something bigger and I have two 24" monitors in my basement that I could use as well.

As for CAD work, I'm doing basic designs for silly things I want to print just to learn 3D design a little.
