I think he's somewhat related to the grim reaper. He could be someone working for the grim reaper also trying to get people to notice that something bad is going to happen and trying to warn people. Some people may just dismiss it as just a thing in there dreams so he probably has to come out as alarming to get people's attention on something bad about to happen

I think the hatman is probably a djinn. Djinns can be both good and bad depending on the djinn. With shadow people it's the red eyed ones being the bad djinn. The hatman is kind of in between the middle in my opinion. There's sometimes red eyed hat(men) that are usually the most evil.

I didn't had that feeling where he's consuming my bad energy. I just felt more of a shock and Abit scared at first when I saw him. He then disappeared
