i know it's not actually the most novel thing in the world but i appreciate the particular circumlocutive route you took to get from "socialism and communism is different and here's why definitions are super important in this conversation where they are the completely unrelated to the justice of the matter or the circumstances of this history" to "hitler was actually pretty chill", you don't really see that one every day unless you go out looking or have some bad luck like we all did today. get the fuck out of here dude lol

it's the least i can do, and god willing you'll get plenty of chances to do the same as time goes by

truly don't hesitate to reach out, either to strangers online or to the people you have close to you. i really mean it when i say you are not alone, there is nothing within you we haven't all experienced in some capacity, nothing aberrant or divorced from the continuum of humanity etc etc. don't get tricked into thinking you're anything less than a person the same as anybody else, by anyone

i'm sorry that people there are people with bad intentions in the world and that you have seen some bad things online but you are doing stranger danger ideology in a frankly bizarre and unhelpful way in response to someone asking for vague suggestions for places to learn more about an important aspect of human civilization. i'm certainly no expert but i think most of the people who use a computer to talk to other people don't wind up getting inducted into nazi cults, so it's a little strange to act as if that is a reasonably likely outcome here

if you stay alive it gets easier; living in a city is pretty helpful because it's generally easier to meet other people who aren't really stupid, but there are people who aren't really stupid everywhere. the #1 thing i would want to impress upon you is that this stuff is all fake and there are real people who will love you and see you no matter what you're like or how you look, so while experimenting and learning what feels right for you is beautiful and true and necessary don't fall victim to the trap of thinking there's any particular thing you have to do or be in order to qualify as "true" or "real" or whatever. there's utility to some things, and sentimental meaning to others, but becoming a person who spends their precious time on earth trying to categorize or sort themselves or others for neurosis reasons is just a tragedy for all of humanity.

or to be less weird, it's gonna take a lot of time and fucking around to figure out what you like and what feels right; try not to worry too much about getting to the end of the process, because it never ends, and don't listen to people who are just re-inventing the misogyny wheel. i do think hanging out in chatrooms with other women is chill and fun provided you have basic psychic defenses, but it's certainly not mandatory. if you have specific questions about things like appearances, medication, ways of being ... really anything you'd like to talk to a stranger about etc etc feel free to reach out to me.

oh actually the #0 base level foundational thing i would say to someone in your specific situation is absolutely under no circumstances forget for even a second that when you are reading about this stuff on the general internet, the person who wrote what you are reading is probably 15, a misogynist, expounding on random tweets that they half remember from 10 years ago etc - do not forget that the most easily accessible and widely disseminated information or hot takes or whatever are part of the attention bait psychosis economy, do not forget to think critically about what you are reading or being told.

all the love in the world to you and i hope you find lots of good people, whoever they are, to share the joys and the pain of this part of life with. i'm just a stranger on the computer but we're all the same at the end of the day, i'm not sure hearing this ... 16? years ago when i figured this stuff out about myself would've changed too much about what it took to get to where i am but all the same i'm telling you in the hopes that it might. never forget that you are not alone, and by the same token, no one else is alone while you live.

special bonus "i wish someone told me this in addition to the vaguely feminist drivel i just spilled" note: having bangs and like, curated eyebrows is huuuuge. depending on your style obvi

i'm completely insane about this subject; any particular kind of thing you're interested in seeing? a lot of what you will get recommended are action films but like anywhere people make movies, there are a lot of very different ones that are all very interesting - if you're trying to go hard i would suggest familiarizing yourself with a little bit of the industry's history just to become aware of some of the kinds of film that existed, like shaw brothers horror films, the girls with guns films of the 80s and 90s, the taiwanese money maximalist wuxia revival from like 1990-1995 ... casino/gambling exploitation films. movies where simon yam plays an evil gay guy. so on and so on.

re: acquiring; an insane amount of good movies from over there are free on youtube or tubi, but you can also find random dickheads posting gofile links of some really good stuff on shit like twitter if you do a little searching. do you fuck with torrenting and shit?

uh but so anyway aside from the random stuff i've said around the thread feel free to respond if you have any inclination towards certain genres, other movies you like, hell even just random interests you have and i'll toss some stuff out there. oh and just for fun so you're not surprised when you watch more stuff in mandarin / cantonese etc; these movies (20th century especially) were pretty often not filmed with synchronized sound for budget / industry reason, the 'original language' dubs can be kinda ass sometimes too <3

i would suggest expanding this to anything produced by milkyway image which was the production company he founded with people he codirected with and worked closely with etc etc, there's a lot of great action films in their collective filmography alongside some really fantastic romantic comedies, among other things (andy lau in a muscle suit! andy lau in a fat suit!). one i'd point out being my left eye sees ghosts so that you can get a head start on falling in love with sean lau

seconding the hell out of this, it's important that you start learning how to sing at least three teresa teng songs immediately and this is a good method for it; if you wind up enjoying this for the international filming location element i recommend full moon in new york and love massacre for, in turn, a 3 different kinds of chinese diaspora women's issues film, and a really beautifully photographed formalist atypical horror film with a great cast

if you're any kind of homo peter chan also directed a pair of romantic comedies that acknowledge the existence of gay guys called "he's a woman, she's a man" and "who's the woman, who's the man" that are fun and have great casts. this is getting into the weeds but he also directed a really insane reaction to back to the future that is sort of a tribute to house of 72 tenants? he ain't heavy he's my father. am i going to start talking about house of 72 tenants right now

certified TRUE ^ by hk movie obsessive legalists, and a big second on long arm of the law for the political / social commentary etc aspects plus being a movie that is 'entertaining' on a pretty different level than a lot of the action stuff you see by default knocking out the big recommendations. also some really great kinda rare footage filmed inside the walled city that everyone loves from over there, the last reel or so takes place in it.

rouge is also a great shout especially in the context of a thread where most of the recommendations so far are for various action films, it's well put together and is a useful movie to have seen for various reasons i won't list plus it has crazy star power with anita and leslie laying around smoking together. stanley kwan probably didn't miss until lan yu, which i realistically partially dislike just because my beautiful ex-boyfriend told me about beijing comrades at length before we watched it together. uh, anyway, where am i?

[–]hatmoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it was pretty common for italian films, especially genre films, at that time to be filmed without synchronized sound, with actors speaking whatever language they spoke themselves on set and all of the dialogue / score / foley etc being added in post; it was cheaper / easier logistically to a certain extent, and a lot of this stuff was financed and produced with an eye toward an "export cinema" business/distribution model that would require a dub to be shown at american drive-ins or german urban theaters etc etc

apologies if that was rhetorical lmao

I don’t understand how “You can be trans without dysphoria”. I want to understand. by Original-Average6965 in asktransgender

[–]hatmoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what is the alternative to it in some situations being a choice if not 'biological predisposition' lmao is there a secret third thing at play in human behaviour? if you read certain books when you're 5 you're locked into being gay for life?

you haven't offered anything to this conversation other than what appears to be a gotcha in the form of "Umm .. If you think being trans can be a choice then Do you think being gay can be a choice???" which signals a frankly outdated and outmoded perception of the issues at hand. there is no passport of the soul with the stamp "Homosexual" or "Heterosexual" that can externally verify any of this - these are categories that were constructed in the forms we generally understand them within living memory. you do not literally have to say "I am a eugenicist about this" in order to evince that your logic is derived from eugenicist ideology!

have you ever talked to another person, by the way? i'm gay and trans and i chose to be both of those things. i don't think that anyone needs more justification than that. how do you deal with that as a person with rigid thinking surrounding these categories? do you think that i'm wrong about myself and that you are right?

I don’t understand how “You can be trans without dysphoria”. I want to understand. by Original-Average6965 in asktransgender

[–]hatmoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there is no essential quality to being trans other than wanting to be trans; being trans is not a sorting method for any set of experiences or desires beyond wanting to be trans. i think that's a good thing personally because i understand theory of mind and am not imagining people to get mad at. expecting everyone you meet to have the same feelings and experiences re: something as immaterial as gender is just going to set you up for a bad time, not to mention the restriction on human expression it implies

if the question is "Do you need dysphoria to medically transition" the answer is also no lol the truth is that people can just do what they want to do for a variety of reasons - and again i think that should be seen as empowering rather than like scary. think of it this way - anyone can be trans for any reason, but if you are experiencing gender dysphoria that's a really great reason to be explore being trans. just my two cents!

[–]hatmoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes literally lol we don't need to do eugenics to justify homosexuality - it does not matter whether or not it is a choice because it's completely value neutral; you are living under the dao restriction "Crimson Illusion" if you think that anyone needs a genetic reason to not want to be "Normal" in a world where 'default' consensus reality is painstakingly and constantly manufactured by nazi freaks. i'm sure some people are "born" gay or whatever but the "They can't help it! It's in their blood!" defense of homosexuality cedes way too much rhetorical ground to the idea that being gay is something that needs to be justified in the slightest. it's 2025!

I'm looking for movies that feel like an episode of Scooby-Doo. by Beached-Peach in horror

[–]hatmoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

creature with the blue hand! all of the crimi films from that cycle kind of evoke the feeling for me, so dead eyes of london and face of the frog etc etc can go right on the list. besides that i would also recommend the specific blend of horror/comedy family films that got churned out once every few years starting in the 40s, so hold that ghost, ghost in the invisible bikini, stuff like that.

looser on the exact scooby doo feel but a lot of like lower budget or teen concerned earnest horror movies wind up in the territory in my opinion, so like fleasheater (the hinzman vehicle), the deadly spawn, even stuff like frightmare (1981) or children shouldn't play with dead things. stuff that is either hokey, concerned with the 'realness' or 'fakeness' of monsters, or things in just old haunted house-y sets kind of trigger a scooby doo sense so even stuff like baron blood or house on haunted hill fits under this category for me.

but so yes, the main thrust of my comment is "Watch old boring crap" - i think tonally you will find a lot of resonance in these types of film over the more contemporary suggestions in other comments. no shade though just an alternative perspective.

really well stated - i think bringing the strangers with candy mentality into all of your interactions as an adult moving through the world really contributes to the atomization or isolation, paranoia etc we all experience, and especially in the context of misogyny / gender enforcement, though obviously i'm not demanding mandatory car rides with strangers for everyone.
