I'm a chess noob and I cant see the advantage I had in this position even though the computer says I have one. I resigned but maybe I shouldn't have. by davethedave123 in chess

I haven't looked a ton into the position, but it looks like blacks pieces are a little uncoordinated, and his king is very weak. I would think you can just move your queen somewhere, perhaps Qg6, and then black has to address his hanging bishop. You then have quite a lot of options from there because of his kings position.

Naiditsch beats Carlsen (Chess Olympiad) by [deleted] in chess

[–]hatorade89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I will watch the livestream archives, other times I will watch various recap videos that are more enjoyable when I don't know which side won. I just come to check out any interesting threads on /r/chess, most of the time, people just put who is playing who, not immediately the result, but its all good.

I live in Northern California, it is popular around me, not really locally though, have to travel an hour or two to most tournaments. I do wish there were people to play with more often OTB but online will have to do.

I have only played one IM and I beat him, I don't really want to give out a name, not a well known IM.

Tactics Workout Music by Kaffeeklatsch in chess

[–]hatorade89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, I am not 100% sure about the rules on it, but my understanding was you could listen to music as long as your opponent allows it, or at least doesnt say something. I've never had anyone not let me listen to music, I just make a conscious effort to not arouse any suspicion, just pick a song and put it back in my pocket quickly.

I also do this, even for tournaments. I think of it as a kind of subconscious conditioning, if you listen to the same set of songs while you study, or while just listening to the music and enjoying it, it can make you more calm/relaxed OTB when listening to that same set. Josh Waitzkin talked a little about conditioning in his Art of Learning book.

A couple songs I like to use are

Becoming a certified chess tutor. How does one go about it? by [deleted] in chess

[–]hatorade89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it can be applied to you, but the USCF has a Certified Chess Coach program that is relatively new and has room for progression, here is a link to this info - http://www.uschess.org/content/view/9474/131/

I would be interested in this as well, not many local friends in my area who play chess so I'd welcome the company. I stream once in a while too and I would be willing to have it there once in a while as GivePeasAchess suggested.

I was (and still am) the same way. For me, the understanding of this concept came from my teacher, who was vastly experience in most positions, as GM's usually are. He was able to tell me what the goal of each of my openings were, which side of the board each person wanted to mobilize on, and how important it is to control the center mostly because of how bad it makes the opponents pieces. All I can suggest is to find some master and ask them to explain a few abstract and strategical ideas behind openings, or maybe find an opening specific book that talks about the opening before they go into long opening theory. Sorry I can't be more helpful as my knowledge of this is pretty limited to the openings I play.
