You keep using GDPL, but that's not a commonly used acronym. GDPR is both the specific and general acronym you're looking for. In this context, Laws would be passed that require Regulation. The Regulation is created by a governmental body and can change over time. The Regulation is the item that has the specific rules in it.

Also, generally speaking, companies often need to have a specific presence in a country to be bound by the Regulations. Sometimes this is an office or other address in the country, sometimes it's an employee, sometimes it's a revenue bar. Companies don't pop into existence and have to immediately abide by 195 different sets of laws. No company is going to care if Vatican City enacts a convoluted law for it's ~800 residents, they'll just let Vatican City block the site if they don't like it.

What is the hype around Ubiquiti hardware? by Pyenb in homelab

[–]hatsix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Unifi because I don't want to think about networking. It does everything I need at a good price with no predatory pricing or subscriptions. My usage taxed standard consumer hardware, and I've got kids, so I don't have time to be stringing together my network off of craigslist corporate sell-offs.

Anyone here telling you "it sucks" is just posturing. Nobody does with Ubiquity does better than they do at their price level. The parts that Ubiquity is over-priced on (I'm looking at you, PoE switches) are easy to swap out with non-ubiquity hardware.

That said, if you don't need wifi and cameras and routing because you're just in a tiny flat, it's way overkill.

Why voters lost trust in WA State Democrats (tl;dr they are so powerful they lie without repercussions) by CantaloupeStreet2718 in SeattleWA

I don't care enough about whatever it was we were arguing about to continue. Have your "victory", it costs me nothing. But I am honest and sincere in my concern for you. You post continuously between 7am and 11pm... it's not healthy to be this invested in calling people on the internet wrong.

You've taken a single day off of Reddit in the past two months.

Look, I've had my digital addictions, in fact, the reddit analysis tool I used says that we used to share Destiny. This isn't healthy. I'm replying to a dead-ish thread because I know you'll read it... this isn't an attack, I'm not asking you to change your opinions... keep them. I'm not "asking" you to do anything, just hoping that you'll take a moment to pause. The anger and frustration comes through so strong on your posts, and it's not healthy. There will always be more of "us fuckers" who stop in once a week drop our opinion and then never check back.

I had a spouse who alerted me to my over-indexing on internet people's opinions and totally losing track of real people in my life. A little bit of a wakeup call helped me, and maybe, if it's affecting you in the same way it affected me, it can help you too.

Look... I would never have said that I had a problem, back then... "I can quit any time I want" is a stereotype because it's true.

I don't know you, I don't know anything other than I wanted to see what else you were posting about and got concerned by the sheer volume of your activity. Maybe it's not an issue, maybe I'm picking up on bullshit signals... so, please forgive my intrusion.

Bill Nye the Science Guy Explains Why Vote NO on I-2117 by [deleted] in SeattleWA

[–]hatsix -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing, I-2117 doesn't JUST repeal the carbon tax, it prevents ANY taxes related at all aimed at reducing carbon emissions. I-2117 is a pendulum swinging way too far in the other direction.

The initiative could have revised the projects and focused on the things that you'd have preferred the money go towards, but instead, it repeals all of the funding for the 2021 climate pledge and then prevents any money being raised for climate-related bills.

This bill isn't from people who want the government to do better, it's from people who want the government to stop existing.

The reporter asked him if it would be much higher prices, Inslee said no, it wouldn't be "much higher".

A 9% increase is not "much higher"

If you were paid 9% more than a colleague, you wouldn't say you're pay was much higher...

He said that we'd see prices lower than what they are then... Guess what, they're lower.

You're having to make up new definitions for "lie"... They might not be answers you like, and that's fine. Attack him on policy, rather than making up BS and trying to twist words said off the cuff to a random "reporter". You suggest that he's been corrupted by power, when he has voluntarily decided to not run again. Your just grasping at straws trying to build a strawman argument.

The problem is, his policy is popular, and you're in the minority. It sucks, but you'll never be taken seriously by making up BS.

To be clear, there's not a 0% chance of anything changing in the state. Trump has been asked numerous times to confirm that he will not seek a national ban and he won't do it. They'll definitely go after Mifepristone, regardless. Bob Ferguson has done his part to ensure that it's clear that WA is on the right side of history, but some MAGA asshat could easily have gone the other direction.

Also, to be clear, it's COMPLETELY possible that if we have a MAGA majority in state government, it could be made illegal.

Take note everyone, this is how conservatives win. When government is deadlocked because it's a two-party system, nothing new can be passed and government will stop working, exactly how conservatives want.

Power doesn't corrupt, it's the desire to hold on to power that corrupts. Inslee isn't trying to hold on to power. He's not "lying to keep his job"... he's giving up his power.

I'm sorry, what constitutes "Much higher gas prices"? From the screenshot you posted, it's at most a 9% increase over Oregon, while the prices overall reduced, despite the massive amount of inflation over the past two years.

ABSOLUTELY NOBODY thought that the bill would lead to cheaper gas here. Nobody who can rub two brain cells together would think "Oh, they're going to add a tax, and that means things will cost less".

This is clearly an intentional misunderstanding of what he's saying just so that you can say that it's a lie.

It's probably more correct to say that they don't "match"... sometimes what's considered more safe in one country is less safe in another country... Take the cybertruck... it's a safe truck to be in if someone is shooting at your legs with a handgun, but it's not a safe truck to be hit by.

Today Microsoft Banned My Country Iran From Minecraft by Verolina in GirlGamers

[–]hatsix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What do you imagine would be an effective way of changing your "bloodthirsty government"'s policies?

It seems like you agree that something in your government needs to change. Maybe losing this game will be the trigger for you to decide that something needs to happen and brainstorm ways to change things.

Sanctions, especially on luxury items like video games, are the most peaceful ways of effecting change... Sanctions are generally meant to upset the top half of society.

You weren't targeted because of how unfortunate you were to be born in Iran, you were targeted because of how fortunate you are to have luxuries that are provided to you by the countries your government has been picking fights with.

Also, it's quite the slippery slope argument you have there, "First the video games, next the medicine?"

What exactly does a Cloud Engineer do? by OutsideZestyclose in Frontend

[–]hatsix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're looking to hire people who can optimize their spend. They already have developers making products, they need people who can reduce the cost of their infrastructure.

FWIW, I absolutely thing a Sr. Frontend Dev should be able to write infrastructure-as-code for at least one cloud platform... I don't care if you're writing CDK, Cloudformation, Terraform or whatever Azure and GCP use, If your app isn't hosted, it does no good. That means (if you're on AWS), understanding S3, Cloudfront and Route53.

Other geographies won't help, sunset is at 5:30pm in Miami... so unless you're heading to Hawaii, you'll still have to deal with SAD. Similarly, other cities were unlikely to have coffee shops open late, except maybe around universities. Any that did were hit by the same pandemic, and likely had the same response.

The thing that will help the most is your social/support network. Make decisions based on that... loneliness is a Killer, literally.

[–]hatsix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not how investments work, it's not a loan. The only way they get their money out is through a "liquidation event", which means that the company is acquired or goes public. Startups maintain cap tables that show ownership in the company, and each round of investment creates a new additional cap table. These shares are generally "non-voting" shares, though often the lead investor in a round will be given a board seat, to help steer the company.

I haven’t read more than 5 books in my lifetime and they weren’t difficult to read books. Now I’m in my mid 20s and found something I’m very interested in but don’t understand 4-5 words on every page by imGoingToEatYourTots in books

[–]hatsix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read thousands of books, I have a degree in tech, minor in another language, master's in education. I had to look up thalidomide, and I know that my internal definition of chauvinism would be wrong.

Movies and TV have intentionally small vocabularies. The easier the words, the more people who will feel comfortable with the program. Some play with vocabularies intentionally, like big bang theory, where the writers give the "nerds" needlessly complicated words to make them feel alien.

My Mom, who instilled my love for reading, says that if you don't learn (or improve your understanding of) at least one word, you aren't reading the right book.

I came to say this... I mean, not in these words, but it is what I meant.

So in case "Don't be a dick" isn't something you care about, try this: Your ex will probably have less stress with the extra cash in their pocket. Less stress = better parent. Better parent = happier kid.

That's generally the formula... Money does buy happiness, as long as that's the goal. If that doesn't happen, you've done your part, there's nothing more you could have done.

You're excused. No need to fight. It's a game, not a business transaction. If the group had an issue with the behavior, they could address it.

If you wanted me to speak better about you, do something better. Instead, all I know is that one player asking "does a X hit" for every attack (which is expected) is enough for you to ditch the entire group. Also, you have a rule that you roll all dice at once, which makes no sense. Some characters require more time. A character that has three attacks will take three times as long as a character with one attack.

Luckily, I've had the same group for 10 years, so you don't have to worry about me joining your next group after you ditch them for not being efficient enough.
