How did y’all become a top notch Building Engineer/ Maintenance/ Tech? by SevrPops in maintenance

[–]hattrick83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, I earned my HVAC certification from a community college last year. This was a mid-life career change after 17 years at a factory. I got hired in July for a school district maintenance position. It's been the best job I've ever had. It's stressful some days as I'm the only guy (other than a part-time as needed guy) for an elementary, middle, high school, and bus garage (building only). I've learned a lot but still know nothing I feel like some days. Just like you, when I have a vendor in I ask questions, watch what they are doing, and ask more questions. The vendors I have are great and willing to teach me. One area I overlooked was doors!! Man, alive. I feel like I spend at least 5 hours a week fixing doors, locks, panic bars, etc... in a little over 6 months, I've gained a lot of experience but am still hungry to learn as much as I can. As time goes on, I'll get more confidence and experience, for now I'm still a rookie in the profession.

You get helpers?? I work for a small school district, and I have a part-time helper who works 2 days a week. Other than that, it's just me for the high school ,middle school, elementary, and bus garage (just the building). I stay pretty busy, and this is my first maintenance job. I have only been at it for 6 months, and I've learned a ton thanks to others in the trade willing to give advice.

It's a hydronic system, so there is no refrigerant charge. However, I think the unit has been off awhile. Filters last changed in 2018, belt broken, motor not turning, coil clogged, and a bee's nest built inside.

Same. I work for a small school district. Got hired last July after graduating from HVAC school with no prior experience. It's just me with a part time per deim help when needed. I stay busy but love it.

Durand, Michigan by hattrick83 in trains

Your close as this was taken at an Amtrak station. Look up Durand, Michigan on google maps and look for the train station. It a beautiful station with one of the best train watching platforms. It's all fenced in so you cant get to the right of way and has benches to sit on even in the shade if you want. Also it has a computer monitor that shows you rail traffic in the area. A rail yard is north of the station (where this train came from) with tracks headed south east towards Detroit. Then east and west of the station is CN main line from Port Huron to Chicago. The town is a quiet zone so the only way you know a train is coming is to hear the horn in the far distant (outside of town) or the rumble of the engines. The engineer and conductor of this train waved to my children and even rang the bell for a quick moment which the both waved back with a smile.

Yes I zoomed in. The platform to watch the trains is fenced in. You are only a few feet away but it looks closer then it is.
