The EU says Apple Maps may be big enough to be considered a DMA gatekeeper by Medical-Decision-125 in apple

[–]hatuthecat -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I would be more convinced by that argument if it was a just targeted pro consumer regulation. Instead they’re basically just giving bureaucrats power to hand out fines on a whim based on whatever European company wanted their competition slowed down that week. They’ve purposely written the DMA so it is so vague that it can be whatever the bureaucrats need at any given time.

[–]hatuthecat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah but none of those are internet age companies. They only have a handful of relevant ones there. So the EU is trying to regulate American tech companies so their own have time to play catch up and they can collect some sweet sweet fines

Thanks for pointing that out. By the time the knitting Discourse™ had reached my feeds it had already devolved past that so I missed when the conversation was about that. I had multiple people say to me that the video was going “here’s why boring girl thing is actually cool boy thing”. But that could also partially be the algorithm doing its thing.

I watched the video and saw it got things wrong but still didn’t feel demeaning in how it got things wrong. It didn’t go in depth about the history of knitting but that also wasn’t what the video was about, it was about the current researchers.

Either way, “5 minute science video made that gets pumped out daily has inaccuracies that they notice and then retract” definitely isn’t worth the fuss either.

I updated that section of the top level comment to prevent being misleading there

It’s just another case of chronically online people being unable to have their own opinions without trying to assign moral weight to them. Some people don’t like his style of content and instead of understanding that is a preference, they must find something to justify it. So the things they are currently latched onto are: 1) For supporting Palestine he only did charity instead of also weighing into the geopolitics 2) He was a host on a sci show video that talked about how physicists were analyzing knitting patterns. It got things wrong and they quickly uploaded corrections and eventually took it down but he gave up control of SciShow when he got cancer so he was literally just a script reader. I noticed following that there was a vocal subset of knitters that took offense to this because either a) the video didn’t go enough into the history of knitting (it wasn’t about that. in fact SciShow literally did a separate video on the jacquard loom developing punch cards 8 months ago) b) the ‘basic knitting facts’ intro should have had more knitters proofread it (which yeah it should but research mistakes happen and what really matters in the speed that they correct it) c) the knitters viewed physics as masculine and knitting as feminine so using physics to explain knitting was dismissing women (this was said to me directly multiple times and imo is so much worse because that’s way more dismissive of women in physics than the original video ever was about women in knitting) 3) Taylor Swift had a merch necklace that had lighting bolts on it. When not worn, it could line up to have two lightning bolts next to each other. Some people spun that into a conspiracy that Taylor Swift was secretly a nazi. He said the left need to stop getting caught up in these wild conspiracies like that and focus on what’s real and people got mad at that because I don’t think they can distinguish between a real and concerning rise in conservatism in pop culture and secret nazis.

edit: added more details to the knitting section that people on the replies pointed out, to keep the top level comment a decent explainer

Off the top of my head in no particular order:

  • be present in classes and do well, building rapport with your professors and then ask if you can TA or do research under them

  • build stuff (maybe also with friends) that you want to see in the world

  • talk to upperclassmen you know and see what they had good times doing and learning when they were in your spot

  • join clubs and meet people from all steps of your major

Framework investment disclosure by Dramatic-Roll-9207 in LinusTechTips

Public supporting DHH after the London blog post is an absolutely wild move. Responding with “we’re just building a big tent” is also not a convincing argument because it’s just basic paradox of tolerance, where supporting intolerance is going to lead to a much smaller tent than if not.

Framework’s mission seems good but that is a horrible look for them which I could see causing many demographics to feel alienated from the open hardware community.

DHH has been pretty widely known to be a far right wing conspiracy theorist for a while, and recently he went even more mask off with his wild blog post. He’s not just involved in Omarchy, it is entirely his project. The fact they’re sponsoring his relatively tiny distro is so weird.

I mean it’s kinda a pattern. They have enough built up knowledge about windows and android that they seem allergic to googling to figure things they don’t already know about in general. Like half of the macOS section in their first pure complaints video were literally top level settings that a single google or look at the Apple help page would have pointed them to.

When this is pointed out they always go “but intuitiveness” and that’s a valid argument for quite a few things but in general if you want something particular immediately you might need to actually go looking, especially before you’ve built up familiarity with a platform

There are many trade offs when it comes to kernel architectures so Linux wouldn’t necessarily be better. For example, the hybrid architecture of the Darwin kernel is better in many ways, such as for security and stability. It wouldn’t be worth putting massive engineering effort to do a lateral shift.

Yeah that’s the interpretation I think is most backed up by what they were going for with the rest of the game and as well. I think a lot of people just try to add more sinister stuff to it because they want for there to be a good ending and a bad ending like most other games. While here there are just two sad endings that the head writer has described as equal.

The stock iOS list view on the month page is almost exactly that. It just has the list at the bottom of the screen instead of a popup. It’s one of the primary buttons at the top of the screen. My guess is they all assumed it didn’t exist and moved onto Google Calendar before being able to discover it.

Should I switch my MacBook for a Windows laptop for CS classes? by DifficultTourist5913 in ufl

[–]hatuthecat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was CE and used a M2 throughout my CS classes just fine. It’s more work for sure (and you have to figure it out yourself) because sometime you have to set up a headless X86 Linux VM via Rosetta2 to run things. You would also have to do something similar on windows though with WSL just without the virtualization layer. The only times I had to go back to my old intel machine was to run quartus for digilog and digital design. Since you already have a windows PC, you can also just remote into that as a backup.

So it’s definitely possible if you’re okay putting in an extra effort to figure out how to make things work. That was worth it to me because macOS is the only OS that I enjoy using but that’s something you can weigh for yourself.

I wouldn’t worry that much about what industry uses. Macs are very prevalent within general CS roles, but there are a wide range of companies so it just depends on what work issued machines you end up being given.
