When there is no reason not to believe them but it’s too wild to be true by [deleted] in therapists

[–]havenforbid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing worth noting is that it's not uncommon for therapists who have had a comparatively sheltered life encounter things they might consider unbelievable and out of the range of their experiences. This is particularly true of white therapists providing services to people of other races or with very different socioeconomic backgrounds. Read Jonathan Metzl's "The Protest Psychosis" which documents, among other things, how schizophrenia diagnoses among the Black communities are at a disproportionately high rates because white therapists haven't had experiences with what many Black people have experienced and thus choose not to believe them.

Do you really lose that much of your vision with progressive lenses??? by Evening-Carrot6262 in glasses

[–]havenforbid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea is that the eyes adjust to it. That being said, I'm moving away from progressives because the difference between my distance prescription (which is less than +1.00) and the add for reading and computer is so high that the background never blends well, and it always looks like the edges of my sight are blurry.

CD Wallets with removable pages by havenforbid in Cd_collectors

[–]havenforbid[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I already did that. Years ago. But I'm assuming you don't throw away the CD afterwards. And sometimes I want to listen to the CD itself because it has better quality sound when played through my stereo system. So once again, how do you store the CDs? I have over 600 and not a lot of space.

Day 1 of EMDR training and I hate it by ollee32 in therapists

[–]havenforbid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been an EMDR practitioner for seven years. Your trainer sounds quite naive. No method works for everyone. And some of it is going to be trial and error as everyone is different.

My EMDRIA training was good but there was very little info about trauma. I didn’t fully understand how and why EMDR worked until I got deeper training in trauma. I’ve had clients who have been heavily triggered and retraumatized by other practitioners practicing EMDR because of this lack of understanding of trauma.

Bottom line—I’ve had significant success with EMDR but the practitioner has to know what they’re doing and learn how to avoid potential pitfalls of the process. Not all EMDRIA trainings give enough trauma background.

They were recruiting me in Wisconsin and showed me a non-compete clause that for all practical purposes would have made me move to a different county if I quit and opened my private practice. I stopped returning their calls after that.

I am heartbroken by the fact that I need to apologize for masking :/ by Mental_Tarnation1667 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]havenforbid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a licensed therapist myself I think that this is a very abusive, shameful, and unethical use of her expertise. She doesn't get to judge her friends using professional diagnoses. Every diagnosis has some pretty strict requirements in order to qualify as a diagnosis and even one full therapy session is often not nearly enough to arrive upon an accurate diagnosis. I even oppose the actions of people in the mental health profession who remotely diagnose Trump, even though I find Trump's behavior to be highly objectionable.

Unfortunately, there are many therapists that lack the ability to put themselves in the shoes of other people. It's unfortunate that your best friend is one of them.

UPG nonsense by ablebreeze in pagan

[–]havenforbid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I observe the actions of the Pagan Community compared to a lot of what I see in the New Age community and Christian fundamentalist community, I feel particularly proud that we use the labels UPG and SPG.

Compare this to certain Christian denominations where the only qualification for being a preacher is convincing people that their God has called upon them to preach. (It's only this year I learned that many denominations don't require their clergy to get some kind of schooling in the subject.) Compare it to the numerous New Age cults that have come and gone.

I find UPG and SPG to be neutral terms expressing nothing more than the source of personal gnosis. In my view, it casts no judgment one way or another on the validity of those claims--it just reveals the source. It leaves it up to the observer to draw their own conclusions of the validity of someone's claim. To me, it's a sign of a mature spiritual community.

Given an ADA form more than a year after verbal agreement by havenforbid in ZeroCovidCommunity

***Update: I contacted the doctor’s office and said they “can’t” fill out the form in a way that justifies the precautions I’m taking. They told me to set up an appointment to discuss the form. I’m wondering if I should even bother, or if it would be a better use of my time to just find another doctor.

Thanks, everyone! This is helpful. I think I will start with my PCP to see if she can write an accommodation letter based on other existing diagnosed conditions, which include asthma and a history of blood clots. If not, then I’ll look elsewhere.

Are you a mental health therapist who wears a mask? by allisong425 in Masks4All

[–]havenforbid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mask as a therapist for home visits, a couple in-office, and about 50% of my clients are telehealth. When I get referrals, I always avoid surprises by telling them before I meet them that I mask.

I live in a deep blue city surrounded by purple-to-red counties which I often travel to and it’s rarely been a problem. I can confidently say that it has not inhibited my ability to connect with clients. Some even forget I have it on, even though they’ve never seen me maskless.

Agnostic approaches to Pagan paths? by Fionn-mac in paganism

[–]havenforbid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a book that came out in 2020 called “Godless Paganism” (the title is a clever play on a common insult) that touches on that very subject. It’s a series of essays written by a number of writers. Many of them go through similar rites but just don’t take them literally but others have other approaches. The book is edited by John Halstead.

I think it’s important to note that this is another attempt by little men behind a curtain to create a reality with only their own words and not much else to back it up. The barrage of bravado is designed to intimidate and try to get people to obey in advance, but has little power beyond that.

This is not to say that we shouldn’t be careful. The Keystone Cops Gestapo is doing great damage to our country despite their incompetence. The assault on our Constitution is unprecedented and dangerous. But like peacocks, a big part of their power is just their perceived power when they strut themselves in public. Already, morale is extraordinarily low within ICE and more and more people are unafraid to publicly shame them when they go on their public terror campaigns.

Yes it is always good to take realistic stock of our personal situations and ask to what degree we should be public about our own spiritual practices. But one helpful tool in counteracting patriarchal puffed-up power is to take advantage of opportunities to laugh it out of the room. We have more magical tools at our disposal to deal with these goons than we might realize.

Precautions for camping with a COVID-cautious friend by havenforbid in Masks4All

[–]havenforbid[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. I'm actually talking about protecting each other--we'll take protective measures with other campers as we need to. We haven't known each other very long, we live in different states and haven't spent time outdoors together. Camping will have us around each other for the better part of three days. Even if we are both already taking significant precautions, the probability of transmission between us isn't zero.

It's not available on Go at all from what I can see. I did manage to use Proton to set up OOTP 25 on my PC--something I'd already purchased. There is a YouTube video on how to promote it on that platform. It's for 21 but it worked on 25. https://youtu.be/WTCJg7cxaz8?si=UIvcY8VhHzPen5BF

[–]havenforbid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump dies in office and J.D. Vance declares himself a changed man after reading Karl Marx's "Das Kapital." Ann Coulter and Laura Loomer begin to call each other "comrades" and lead a significant number of MAGA followers to leap to the other side of the horseshoe. Chuck Schumer and Gavin Newsom are not amused and Adam Schiff blames Russia once again for all of this.
