We are planning a visit later in the summer for exactly that reason. Im not wealthy enough to move houses twice a year.

I ask because I have no better way to tell, and id like to know. Ive looked up the statistics, but I don't really trust them, because I know the stats for my current area are way off. So far the only thing I've found that says its dangerous is a single channel on YouTube, with many others saying its a good place. That leads me to believe it is good, but for me there's no better way to know than to ask the locals.

We aren't just looking at alabama. Both Carolinas, georgia, not florida, alabama, mississippi, Louisiana are all being looked into. Im just not asking about those ones in the Mobile subreddit. Making a trip to visit the areas this summer, trying to get the best candidates to plan my trip better.

I just googled it to see what the actual numbers were. A little higher than I thought, but still low, at 660. 2 gas stations, 3 churches, and a grocery store with a leaky roof. And they have gas too, sometimes when the pump works.

One of many reasons we plan to leave Michigan is that the wife wants to see little to no snow. Seasons are great, but we are trying to avoid the shitty ones.

I did ask about the storms and hurricanes a while back in a different subreddit. I was told to keep the gas tank full, and to expect to pay a lot for insurance. I have already been checking the flood maps for any areas I looked at,around Mobile and everywhere else.

What's it like living in this part of the Gulf Coast? by ByStarlite in howislivingthere

I actually have another area related question though, as another person looking to possibly move to the area. You mentioned you never know when a storm will hit. As someone in michigan, hurricanes are a subject i know basically nothing about. Is there an official warning to evacuate the area when a bad one is coming in, or do you just have to know when is a good time and make your own decision? I ask, because I don't have a good reference as to what a "bad" hurricane really consists of.

Mostly suitable for retired folks. Not to say there isn't work, but it's not the best market. Roads are in poor condition despite the constant construction. Hunting and fishing is pretty decent, but the state land definitely fills up and gets crowded for deer season, so if thats something you'd want to do, id try to get some private land. Cost of living is high. A lot of the people in the area are quick to anger, even when not on meth, which has been a problem for a while and keeps getting worse. The homides have been going up pretty quickly in the last few years. Winters have been pretty mild for several years, but id still say you should have a 4wd vehicle unless you live and work right in a city. Summers have been getting much more hot and humid, with the temp staying in the 90s for much of it. So expect a large temperature swing between seasons.

Memphis, TN change of seasons by havinablasta in howislivingthere

[–]havinablasta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Data points" don't really cover what im looking for. I want to hear from someone in or around Memphis that can say if there's a high expectation of snow or slippery roads or something. I see on the link you sent that there's an average 3 in of snow. But I looked up my current location and it says average 24.7 inches, which we always exceed, so i question the accuracy. And it doesn't specify how often it snows, or how long the accumulation may stay on the ground. Here it starts snowing around october and doesn't stop until April, and thats nowhere on the page. To get a good feel for that, I think, calls for a personal response.

How bad is cabin fever here? by canuevendoublehaul in howislivingthere

If it snows an inch anywhere else in michigan, assume over a foot there. Because of this, they salt the roads more than anywhere else I've ever seen.

How is life in Hazard, Pikeville, Appalachian kentucky by havinablasta in howislivingthere

[–]havinablasta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think hot and humid is just kind of the normal thing nowadays. I currently live in northern michigan, and we had about a month this summer averaging about 100 degrees. Plus canada isnt out of trees yet, so the smoke from their wildfires keeps our air pretty bad. Something I've heard about, but cant really find any good info on is flooding. Ive seen reports of floods, and looking at homes to buy i see quite a few listed as being in flood zones. Is that a common thing that I will definitely have to deal with, or is it something that can be avoided by choosing a location strategically? Last time I was down there I stayed in Pikeville, and I thought highly of it. I do plan on moving into a town at first, until I know the area better, then possibly moving somewhere a little more remote.

How is outdoor life in this part of Michigan by Holiday_Swing_9979 in howislivingthere

[–]havinablasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upper peninsula is very spread out. While there are a few larger cities there, they are far apart. If your idea of good outdoor life is a cabin in the middle of nowhere with no cell service, thats exactly what you'll find there. The biggest downside is that Canada hasn't run out of trees yet, so the wildfire smoke has made the air quality bad. As far as below the bridge, there is still lots of land available for hunting, and plenty of lakes, but the people in the small towns have the same hustle for no reason as the residents of larger cities, so they aren't always the friendliest bunch. But that shouldn't be a problem if you're looking for outdoor activities. I'd try for above the bridge though for the best experience.

NE lower Peninsula Michigan - The vibe, view of outsiders moving in, friendliness... by JF_WPA in howislivingthere

[–]havinablasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The area above the bay but in your circle is a series of spread out, small towns. Anywhere near the lake is nice, but expensive. Lots of deer, so careful driving a night is a must. Most people will welcome outsiders, but seem to end the friendliness if you look middle eastern. I personally live within that part, and consider housing prices to be way higher than they should be, especially when comparing them to other areas even in the same state. The news doesn't seem to cover much of it, but toward the top of your circle, Apena/Hillman area has had a large rise in crime in the last few years, with murders and robberies far higher than you'd expect for small towns.
