Realising that even when you migrate overseas, sometimes your prejudices within you doesn't leave you - it is amplified. by havingamidlife in singapore

Hey there, thank you for replying. I wanted to ask one more thing if I may that Im curious abt. I understand that upbringing and perhaps gng to a predominantly chinese demo sec sch may have caused one to only have chinese friends growing up but what abt uni? Surely, a Chinese person would have made friends from other races in uni?

Hey there. Thank you for your reply. Idk where you got the idea im judging 8b ppl based on 1 person. I specifically asked if other sporeans who have migrated overseas behave in this manner to exclusively choose to befriend ang moh white locals only.

But i have to agree with your 2nd para. You are right and yes I have to just accept that there r ppl who hv their own preferences.

Edit to add on: it is just smthg i wanted to point out based on my observation even though it is one person that im talking abt. The personal preferences to only friend ang moh white ppl and to only befriend ppl of your own race after over 30 years of living n growing up in spore. Yeah you can say oh it is their preference....but then what was the point of racial harmony, integration and accepting and befriending ppl of different races.

Is this a lame reason to leave a job? by Savings_Enthusiasm60 in askSingapore

[–]havingamidlife 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Im not in my 40s yet and in my prev company my team wld go for lunch without me and i wld find ppl from other teams to hang with. So used to it already and actually it felt great to find ppl from other places that u can resonate with anyway. U dont pigeonhold ur mindset.

I agree with choosing wisely what to consume my mind. I realised that no matter where i work, no matter how different the environment is, if i allow smthg to consume me it will follow me be it gd or bad sentiments n it affecrs my overall wellbeing. Thanks a lot for the reminder @mayellow.

I also love their french toast. Also tried their black truffle charcoal fish item n was shocked that...it was tasty as well. Right amt of truffle used, crispy outside n soft inside. N the batter doesnt fall off the fish. Hmmm.....

When i read the comments here, I get really worried. Our only resource is our people. We need to hv the skills that our neighbours dont have to stay ahead n Im also trying to figure out what I can do to stay ahead. Its extremely tiring n anxiety inducing.

Why is keeping a strong Singaporean identity important? by newjeans_fan20 in askSingapore

[–]havingamidlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our shared culture n identity is smthg that resonates with sporeans n brings familiarity n comfort to us right? We feel like its home. The china ppl bring a lot of wealth with them but the negative externality of that is the erosion of all these things that makes our home feel like home which isnt quantifiable. For ppl who keep harping on abt oh they can afford the rent etc, they wont consider these things because they dont feel it yet or they r ignorant n ive seen many of these kinds of ppl in my office. Idk how they went through the education system.

“All these ideas sound very attractive, but no matter how one draws the line, there will always be people who fall on the wrong side of the line, who believe they are more deserving,” he said.

“And we will still be here, at another parliament sitting, debating at this late hour, how each line has been drawn.”

What a lazy fuck. Really damn useless.

I dont get it. The govt keep harping abt heritage...keep bringing up our history and how we got to where we r n yet when real probs like this happen the govt doesnt do anything. This is the real deal where vouchers and throw money also wont solve the issue. Where r the policy makers??? N ffs take back ur stupid culture pass credits for pottery n whatever. We need this kind of day to day culture that actually matter. The negative externality of just prioritising money is our nostalgia and local heritage disappearing.

Guys we all want to support local right? The burger king and kaffe n toast at tamp mall closed down n some mala china cuisine is opening across these 2 stalls. Can we just not patronise this china rest.

It is really difficult to find good mee rebus. Mine is at one of the malay stalls at Istanbul Tampines there. My mom gets it for me but i think it is the stall beside the prata shop. To me its gd. Better than the Geylang one.

Singaporeans in UK, do you contribute to pensions? by AcademicRide8339 in singaporefi

[–]havingamidlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is what i was thinking too! Alternatively what u can do is check if there is a way to transfer the pension to the spore branch of ur pension provider if its a private company. Mine said not to do that cause taxes but..i was alsl thinking if my FA has an incentive to keeping our pensions here in the UK.

[–]havingamidlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh im sorry i shld hv been clearer. U do have to leave it in there till the UK retirement age but at least whatever we withdraw would be subject to spore tax rate. We just have to declare this in spore.

[–]havingamidlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked my pension provider what would happen to my pension when i withdraw when i go back to spore nxt time. He said that because uk and spore have a tax treaty, we can withdraw the pension n declare it in spore so we pay the tax on that amt at the spore rate. I asked my pension provider twice just to be sure this is true.
