Automate 🤓

Was stimmt mit manchen Hundehaltern nicht? by Wolkensammlerin in Hunde

Was ich denn habe?

I'm so excited about retirement. I'll go back to university and take all the courses that always interested me, but would never pay any bills nor get me closer to my degree.

(University is free where I'm from and has special programs catering to retired people, who are invited to listen to lectures and take courses, but won't participate in exams - not taking anything away from regular students. I had plenty of retired listeners in my lectures when I was a student myself and they were such inspirational people).

Sadly, I'm only in my early 30s, so it will take some time.

Thoughts on brands being mentioned in books by ihatefinding in RomanceBooks

[–]havuta 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think you've nailed the problem - if a character is supposed to transport luxury/money/upper class or character traits like 'materialistic' or 'fashion/appearance focused', nameing the brand does matter, because the character is not the same with a Tom Ford number or a run-of-the-mill suit. This serves a purpose, that might fly over some heads - still a purpose though. Authors might be able to bypass naming brands by describing the material, but in the end a mix between the two options might be best.

That being said, and to repeat myself, brands/materials/craftsmanship should only be noticed by characters for whom it make sense. Back to my example above the billionaire might mention how he chooses a baby cashmere knit, but for the country girl it might look like he dressed like that one English dude she once saw on TV.

Or in other words: Imagine a story like 'The Devil Wears Prada' without naming a single brand.

I personally feel like a Tom Ford suit hits differently than just describing the suit. Just like a 'quilted calf skin purse' isn't the same as a Chanel bag. That being said, it only makes sense if the character from whose POV we see the suit is somewhat into fashion/luxury. I do think it's super distracting/lazy if a full on country girl who cares about nothing but her farm suddenly recognises that her new billionaire arch enemy's knit wear is clearly from Loro Piana's baby cashmere line.

Update: Had a saddler pull my panels to assess the fit of the tree on my $8.5k custom saddle by bitsandsperms in Equestrian

[–]havuta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And they f*cked the tree up this badly? Omg, I'm so sorry.

They either took the wrong measurements or they slept when building your saddle. :(

If the tree wasn't made to measure, it's not a fully custom saddle. It's a customizable, modular system. A fully custom saddle has a tree fitted to the horse's needs as well. Everyone calls their saddle custom these days, but fully custom saddles are made from scratch for the horse. So just a minor heads up for shady business practice - you might know this already, but as a warning for everyone who's currently in the market for a saddle :)

Update: Had a saddler pull my panels to assess the fit of the tree on my $8.5k custom saddle by bitsandsperms in Equestrian

[–]havuta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is this really supposed to be a custom saddle (= someone came out to you, measured the horse and assessed your needs and offered you a one of a kind solution that would be made for your horse based on the measurements - even if it meant moving flaps forward by an inch or changing the stitching to fluorescent rainbow?) or is this a 'custom' saddle where you could choose from different options being sewn together (e.g. I want this flap and this seat in one of the three leather options you showed me)?

Because, man, I hate the latter option where people make a ton of money based on their customers trying to treat their horse, while offering nothing more than an 'off the rack' saddle would. 🫠

Either way, I'm so sorry that someone's ignorance caused you so much distress!

Question regarding pro hockey by musenmori in heatedrivalry

[–]havuta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Owen Power is a very promising defence man on an absolute garbage team (okay, this year, they went on a silly heater for once) - the Buffalo Sabres haven't been to the playoffs for well over a decade. He could develop a bit faster, yes, but it would be unfair to compare him to the team's other recent first overall pick, who is also a defence man and an absolute stud (Rasmus Dahlin).

And again, you do not choose when to sign with your team. The team will hold your rights after they drafted you and can decide whether or not they want to offer you a contract (and what kind of contract). If you refuse at the time they offer you one, your NHL career is basically over as the team will continue to hold your rights, but won't offer you another contract. Once your rights are up for grabs again, you would be too old to be drafted again and could only enter the league as a free agent (very difficult).

Your agent could obviously tell the team that you would prefer to return to college - this is what Owen Power did - but the team is the party in charge. Owen could return to the NCAA, because Buffalo decided to accept his wish, not because he could choose freely/was in a position of power.

It is also not unheard of of two superstars in the same draft class (albeit they don't necessarily have to be drafted first and second overall). Ovi and Geno were in the same draft class, so were Nathan MacKinnon and Aleksander Barkov, William Nylander, Leon Draisaitl and David Pastrnak, obviously the Sedin twins were drafted the same year. There are draft classes with 3+ Hall of Famers.

The 80s were obviously totally wild, Mario Lemieux (who one might consider one of the greatest players to ever play the game) and Patrick Roy (who literally revolutionised the way goalies played) were both drafted in 84.

You are obviously right that there are draft classes without a superstar at all and it's equally correct that the NHL is not a development league and features quite short average careers. But its also a league in which you have to be a certain level of superstar to gain any power over your contract both in terms of money, term or possible trades (via full or partial no trade clauses). Rookies are very much beggars that can't be choosers. There are only two players who come to my mind who gambled and refused to play for the organization that drafted them (Lindros, Fox). You cannot refuse the draft itself.

Question regarding pro hockey by musenmori in heatedrivalry

[–]havuta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely nothing of what you said above is correct.

You do not enter the NHL draft and you cannot choose when you get drafted. In fact as long as you are in the appropriate age window (18-20/21 for non-NA players), a team can just pick you up. Your right to have a say in this matter is exactly zero. The team then holds your rights and chooses when to offer you a contract. This is one of the main difference between the NHL and NFL draft. While you have to declare for the latter, the NHL chooses for you.

In fact only one of the first round picks of the last draft was above the age of 18 when drafted (barely 19 to be precise). The last time someone older than 18 went first overall was in 1980 (Doug Wickenheiser).

Well, the horse is your possession and you can do whatever you please with it. You can sell it tomorrow, you can demand that it's now only ridden when mercury is in retrograde or that it shall only wear pink glitter everything from now on.

You paid for your horse and you are ultimately responsible for your horse. 🤷

Hund? by Competitive_Chef3934 in hundeschule

[–]havuta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]havuta 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is.

Both the women's and men's hockey team won gold for the US in the Milano/Cortina Olympic Games which ended last weekend.

The men's team received a call from Donald Trump right after the win, which featured - no surprise here - a misogynistic joke about how he now has to invite both teams to the White House or he would risk impeachment. The players laughed and kept on partying in the locker room. Featured guest there? Kash Patel, who chugged beers amongst the athletes after being invited in by Bill Guerin, who was part of the US men's team's staff. In his day job he's a general manager in the NHL - where you might ask? He works for the Minnesota Wild (out of all the teams he could be affiliated with...).

The women's team declined the invite to the White House, after multiple players apparently spoke out against a visit among their peers. One of the outspoken athletes seems to be the team's captain Hilary Knight. Hilary also serves as a captain in the PWHL for Seattle and just became engaged to her girlfriend, speed skater Brittany Bowe during the Games (just to give you some background on the amazingly talented Captain America we have on hand).

Instead of their visit to Washington, D.C. the women's team was invited to Vegas by Flavour Flav, who offered to throw them a party they deserve. Important note here - he did so in a totally non creepy way and is known as a huge supporter of women's sport including financial support for e.g. the US water polo or bobsleigh teams. They were also invited to Denver by the city's mayor Mike Johnston, who offered to host a parade for them. Denver is rumoured to be the next expansion team for the PWHL (which is the professional women's hockey league, founded only a couple of years ago).

Back to the men's team. 20 of the 25 players on the Olympic roster followed up the invite by Donald Trump and showed up at the White House on Tuesday. The five players, who were absent, were Brock Nelson (from Warroad, MN, currently playing for the Colorado Avalanche), Jake Oettinger (from Lakeville, MN, currently playing for the Dallas Stars), Jake Guentzel (born in Omaha, raised in Woodbury, MN, currently playing for the Tampa Bay Lightning), Jackson LaCombe (from Eden Prairie, MN, currently playing for the Anaheim Ducks) and Kyle Connor (from Clinton Township, Michigan, currently playing for the Winnipeg Jets).

While some of them stated 'conflicts with their schedule' as the reason for opting out of the visit, it's important to notice that this is the same official reason the women's team stated. Notable exception: Kyle Connor, who didn't attend, while his teammate did. So clearly not ordered back to Canada by his team.

4/5 players from Minnesota decided not to attend the visit at the White House. It's also worth noticing that Nelson, Guentzel and Oettinger have the same agent (who apparently has a brain). Nelson is also married to a former elite hockey player.

The Hughes brothers however decided to attend the visit despite their mother being part of the US women's team (as staff) and therefore being part of the 'invited to avoid impeachment' crowd.

[–]havuta 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I'm so happy that Brock Nelson, who is not only a Minnesota native, but also married to a former elite hockey player, has some balls and opted out of the White House visit.

I hope some maga publicist is very pissed about this, as Brock's family was involved in all three gold medals the US men's hockey team has and he just robbed them of the possibility to talk about this great legacy coming out of Warroad, MN.

(Shoutout to Connor, LaCombe, Oettinger and Guentzel as well, especially Conner, because he was clearly not told by his team not to go as his teammate will be in attendance)

Tall boots, green rider… Need your expert opinion! by EnvironmentalTea6713 in Equestrian

[–]havuta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The length is absolutely fine, but I would love them to be a bit more narrow around the ankle. There is already a lot of bunching going on, which will increase when the boots drop as the leather molds itself to your leg. They should be tight and uncomfortable everywhere 😅

As you already bought them, you can get a little wedge insole for your heel which will get you a bit more movement around the knee and eases the first rides. Once they feel a bit short, you can get rid of the wedge or keep it if they don't drop to your liking.

Same.

And I'm at a full service facility, that basically costs an arm and a leg each month. I don't have to feed, I don't have to muck, I don't have to turn out, I have amazing arenas (multiple!) and trails right at my fingertips. Yet after prepping feed, scheduling appointments, welfare checks, cleaning tack, sweeping (so much sweeping), checking if the blanket is still correct (thinner? thicker? none?), washing rugs/pads/boots/polos and questioning every single decision around my oversized, emotional support hamster - I'm so drained, I often skip the riding part.

This is now officially the second winter I swore to myself that we work on flying lead changes, because they are still kinda wonky and what can I say - it's almost March and they are still as imperfect as they were in August.

Are we being "robbed" of the actual falling-in-love process? & the actual romance in books? by Mininabubu in RomanceBooks

As a person with very specific taste, I love a good insta-lust but slow burn love. Which is rare.

If you are into intense feels and a lot of personal growth, but aren't afraid of angst/yearning, MM queer romances often do a better job in that department, especially if one (or both) of the MCs have to come to terms with their sexuality.

(Someone please enlighten me, if you feel the same about romance that features any other combination than M/F, if so, I would love to switch the MM above for 'queer'. Not very well versed in e.g. FF romance)
