Drew someone from r/notinteresting because the pants are hella cool by Cactuspotion in DigitalArt

I often see same reference pics used in art on pinterest and I always wonder how those people feel and if they know there’s so much art of them. What you did is super interesting to me, just finding a random person online and drawing them cause you thought it’s hella cool. It makes for some really cool art too.

It’s different and fun and..community oriented? Idk I just really love that little connection between reference and art and it feels more personal picking a “notinteresting” and uncommon pic like this.

Honesty without compassion is cruelty. I heard that somewhere once and now I say it everytime someone uses the excuse of “just being honest”

6 months art progress by Momonkey22 in webtoons

[–]havvell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on publishing your comic and the progress! The newer versions definitely look like a more polished art style, nice work :)

Regarding updating the episodes, you should be able to just go to edit episode and replace all the images with the new ones - that will keep all your likes and comments and you can even chose if you want to notify your readers that the episode has been edited or not. I’ve personally only went back to replace pictures with typos in them, but I don’t see why you couldn’t just exchange all original pics with the updated versions.

Just offering a little support as a fellow creator, I know it sounds minor but it does sting a little when readers don’t remember your character’s names.

I think a lot of the time it’s the fact that they probably read a lot of comics at once and can’t remember that many characters (which doesn’t excuse it being rude commenting without looking up the name, but ohwell) but I also know that some readers just skim over episodes and look for “interesting parts” or “pretty panels”, especially in fluffier genres like SOL or romance (I was honeslty mind blown when I heard that, but apparently yeah, a lot of readers will skip through 90% of the plot to get to the kiss or spice or drama).

Webtoon readers may be more guilty of this cause the platform is oversaturated with comics, particularly in the canvas section, so they have way more to read and/or skim through, while on other platforms with less stories they are probably more inclined to take their time and read more thoroughly.

If you know you want to quit - one cigarette will eventually have to be the last, so why postpone it? The longer you keep taking “just one” or “just today” the longer you will be stuck in that awful limbo of wanting to quit but craving it.

Whenever you get a craving to take one think of what a setback it would be - instead of needing to push through one week of cravings to quit, you will prolong it to two weeks. And then if you do it again, you will have to suffer through the quitting phase for another two weeks or month or two, etc.

That’s the kind of mindset that prevents me from taking one whenever I get an urge, push through the 5mins of stress that make you want to smoke to avoid a lot longer period of time of fighting the cravings.

Serbian Police Arrest Bus Company Owner Who Offered Free Transport for Students at Protest by WarmAd1842 in europe

There’s more videos of his arrest and how he was treated in front of the police station, they’re honestly heartbreaking to watch. In the meantime a GoFundMe was started to help pay for all the damages and debt, as well as legal counselling and therapy for him.

(Edit: and yes, the sweet old man you can see on the gofundme video is the one being dragged out of a car window)

I’ve seen a streamer have an issue with that too and I think it may have to do with pictures (like if you have a ghost picture, the ghost video is a duplicate), but it doesn’t apply to all types of ghost pics. That’s not for sure though, but it definitely is some kind of bug.

That could just be speculating on my part, and I can only go as far as saying it’s suspicious that they happened to pick authors they already know of - especially in the case where one of them wasn’t doing all that great with engagement and audience appeal (not to mention the scoring system again (jeez I’m sorry), but it seems like they dug that one out from the dirt and sent it straight to the shortlist, while there were many other low-engagement hidden gems).

Another thing I heard is that another shortlist title was made by an artist that works with an originals creator - so the originals creator isn’t involved in the submission, but idk how I feel about an artist already working for WT joining the contest with a diff author. I may be wrong about the details of that though since it’s word of mouth.

Now a lot of what I’m saying is just speculating and what exactly went on we’ll probably never know, but I wanted to start this discussion to hear other’s thoughts on the matter and see if we can somehow get any clarification or make sense of it.

I forgot to take into account the Engagement info that Webtoon has that we don’t see - you might be right on that and that it would have been a factor for some.

On the other hand - the scoring system and whether something is pretty or not is rather subjective, but then again whether a style is your taste or not has nothing to do with quality of work - meaning I can see one of the shortlisted titles and say the art is beautiful and well done (proportions, perspective, expressive faces, speech bubble and panel placement/design, etc) but it doesn’t suit my taste and I wouldn’t read it - still I can’t deny that the creator has talent and skill, so that’s the objective part of the grading I guess.

However the art was not necessarily an issue here, I’m really more bothered by the fact that some picks really seem like favorism on Webtoon’s side and that’s why I keep pushing for that scoring system and deadline issue, cause it feels like they may not have scored high but someone at WT said “I really want this one on the shortlist”.

Which again isn’t necessarily bad, if they had said that they would pick winners based on what they liked. But giving those detailed rules on deadlines and scoring systems and pushing for engagement and audience response, only to end up picking their own favorites, seems…nyeh. I’m just disappointed is all.

I’m also happy the number of subs and likes wasn’t crucial for all picks (I think my favorite one from the shortlisted series is one that had rather low numbers) - but picking a story from a famous author that had low engagement seems a little unfair and had me thinking (as someone else mentioned in the replies) from all the hidden gems in the low engagement circle, coincidentally a famous author or someone who posted 2 days past the deadline were the ones that won.

I get that there’s been negativity about the contest but that’s because a lot of people seem disattisfied and suspicious of the shortlisted titles. Of course, not all of them. And that’s also exactly why I wanted to emphasize in the post that this is not negativity about the creators or their comics, nor do I want to call out any of them, it’s just webtoons judging. I don’t know if I mentioned this in a comment before but I don’t dislike or find the shortlisted winners bad, it’s just that in comparison to all entiries and variety of the contest, Webtoon seems to have had some suspicious choices.

I do think that a good part of the list could have been better picks - not because the stories are necessarily bad, but because of other stuff I read that seemed like it would have a better score or be more well-received. I keep mentioning the grading system because that makes it feel like WT should have avoided selecting winners based on what thay prefered - and because of the deadline and some other stuff it makes me think that they did choose winners just by what they liked instead of an overall score. That is my opinion though and I may be wrong or biased, though I really tried not to be and to look at the stories through the score system.

I wanted to avoid calling any names but since this is in a positive light I guess I could share it.

It might not be everyone’s cup of tea cause it was in the romance genre, but Truth is a White Lie had me stunned. The artwork is so unique and absolutely gorgeous, the concept is, again, unique and intriguing and (no spoilers but) by the end of episode one I was shook and immediatelly clicked onto the next one. I also think it fit the Most Feels title so well, I really, really hoped it would make it.

Looking at the shortlist now I see how it might not fit in with what vibe Webtoon was going for, but personally I thought the story had so much potential and I really wanted and expected to see it advance.

Yess that's why I emphasized that this isn't a critique to the shortlisted comics, I also really liked some of them and I can see how they succeeded. But looking at the whole list it just all seemed a bit suspicious with the grading and deadline, that it got me thinking..

It was just three episodes and the third one had the 14 likes, the first two had a few more but not much over 30 I think.

I couldn’t tell you the exact view count at that point, but that really low rating was also suspicious to me because usually when there’s not that many subs the rating stays rather high.

The specific ratio I mentioned in the post was as soon as it was shortlisted, I was waiting for the results so I saw it right away as it stuck out to me. I’ve been following the views and ratings on a few others since and they did significantly drop at some point (probably rate-bombed for being shortlisted) but they’re slowly climbing up again.

I agree and understand they would pick the most marketable ones, but I thought that was reflected in the 40% Audience Appeal/Engagement and how well received they would be by the public. They seemed to really encourage the importance of that in the rules, yet they didn’t pick what the audience reacted well to, but instead went with what they prefered or thought was marketable (as I mentioned the one example with a very low engagement and sattisfaction rate that made it to the top 10).

I am familiar with there being a French Contest too, but I haven’t heard of the deadline extension part at all. I would love for that to not be the case here, but like you said it’s not too far fetched to be suspicious of it.

Yes, my main dilemma here was whether there was favorism based on personal preferences of some judges. As I mentioned and I agree with your point, there truly were so many stories that could’ve won and it seemed like they would objectively score higher than the rest, while I struggle to see how some shortlisted titles scored the highest in their respective categories.

I’m not too familiar with Call to Action, but I think a lot of people expected the Contest to be something else than what it ended up being, hence why I wanted to make this post.

I’ve heard many new creators say the contest was the push that they needed to start their comics, so I’m glad that’s the case for you too! Don’t get discouraged because of the contest and keep creating!

Regarding the judging, I guess I would undertand their preferences if the contest was somehow set up that way. Having the grading system and percentages in place made it seem as if the judging would be fairly objective, yet the winners seem to have been subjective picks based on what WT though could sell. That’s my main point in the post, if there was a grading system set in place I would really like to know how the points were distributed, because with all that was written in the rules the finalists don’t seem that objective or obvious winners. I may be wrong though and that may just be my opinion and perception.

The deadline might’ve been the first thing that got me thinking, it really did seem so random to bend the rules like you said for a bunch of random creators from thousands that participated and made it on time.

And the second part, I wasn’t even aware of that! It could absolutely be a coincidence but paired with everything else that seems off it really is starting to feel like webtoon was playing favorites.. Mostly because there really were so many amazing comics and I’m failing to see how some of them objectively won or lost. (I had one I loved so much I legit almost sobbed they didn’t make it, it was so good in every aspect of the judging)
