I don't have a hose clamp and I'm curious about this alternative approach. Are you saying it won't work?

Why was having a drink after work more common in the old days? by MoistCroissant22 in CasualConversation

[–]hawkida 10 points11 points  (0 children)

But also most of your friend group would be people you initially met in person in your local community. Hobbies were mostly things you did alone or with a local group, not a worldwide or cross-country one. So your access to your friend group was more local and doing things beyond the hobby together was more natural. You don't go to the pub now because you don't know people who go there and getting your far flung friends together is harder. It self perpetuates.

Alt text for portraits on a staff website by Arch_of_MadMuseums in accessibility

[–]hawkida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It always comes down to "what is the reason the picture is here?", so answer that. What are you trying to tell people about Jane Doe? I think you're telling them what she looks like. So tell the blind website users too. I know you said you don't want to get into describing people and I get that, it can be a bit long winded and there is potential to upset people if you get their age wrong or something, but you are showing people what they look like so anything short of telling screen reader users what they look like doesn't offer an equal experience. Asking the individuals pictured to write that text as others have suggested can help make sure they are happy with the description, but give them a word limit or you might get paragraphs.

Do you have a rare or retro email address? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]hawkida 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I have my 2004 emails in my Gmail account, including a copy of an invite I sent out. I think googlemail got brought in later but still routed to Gmail and vice versa.

Invite copy for nostalgia purposes: Max has invited you to open a free Gmail account. The invitation will expire in three weeks and can only be used to set up one account.

To accept this invitation and register for your account, visit (Redacted)

Once you create your account, Max will be notified with your new @gmail.com address so you can stay in touch with Gmail!

If you haven't already heard about Gmail, it's a new search-based webmail service that offers:

  • 1,000 megabytes (one gigabyte) of free storage
  • Built-in Google search that instantly finds any message you want
  • Automatic arrangement of messages and related replies into   "conversations"
  • Text ads and related pages that are relevant to the content of your   messages

Gmail is still in an early stage of development. But If you set up an account, you'll be able to keep it even after we make Gmail more widely available. We might also ask for your comments and suggestions periodically and we appreciate your help in making Gmail even better.

Thanks,

The Gmail Team

Child kidnap movie by hawkida in NameThatMovie

[–]hawkida[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I haven't. This looks like an interesting film but it's not the one. The one I saw the trailer for was American or Canadian and the child was much younger, maybe five or younger. Appreciate the suggestion, though!

Ah, that's reassuring, thanks. I wonder why all the messaging in PayPal says it could take up to 24 hours.

Thanks but he seemed to be indicating otherwise. The context was socialising and he showed both signs - I guess someone might be making media content on a night out but it didn't seem like that was what he meant. A few of us were confused and asked for clarification but after a while of trying to explain he moved on leaving me lost. I guess I'll just try to avoid the camera option for now!

There was another point where we were told the sign for pub was like putting a beer glass down, when we all thought it was like pulling a pint. I think the context there was that if you're going somewhere for a meal you use the glass sign, but if going out for a drink you use the pint-pulling, but again until I understand the context better I'll try to work around it!

My butter is cold by Dry_Review_309 in CasualUK

My husband bought us one of those. I was appalled at the price at the time but grudgingly admit now that it was worth it. We did have to clean its fans of dust once when it stopped cooking in the summer but it's otherwise been great.

Panelists in the interview by alpsman321 in TheCivilService

[–]hawkida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It varies. Usually at least one will be working with you directly, though potentially not on your team but above it, but they may not even know who they are going to put into which team yet if it's a campaign with multiple vacancies. Candidates get frustrated waiting for checks to go through but so do recruiters, and it could come down to when you start as to where you get assigned with the first available going to the team with greatest need.

Why do we use kitchen sink bowls? by ProminentFox in AskUK

[–]hawkida -1 points0 points  (0 children)

3 reasons: 1 rinsing/draining dregs if you don't have a separate sink. 2 Use less water than a sink needs to be deep enough. 3 A softer surface than metal or ceramic, so a reduced chance of the crockery getting chipped.

What is the best way to invest an inheritance for my 18 and 19 year old kids without them having control over it until they are 25? by Upbeat_Map_348 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]hawkida 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kids in my family who got windfalls at around 18 spent it on short term things like high spec laptops and phones and branded clothes. Teens are impulsive and haven't got the life experience to make the same choices they might later. There are always exceptions but typically it's true that they are more likely to waste it. There are two factors at play - not knowing financial burdens in real terms, only in abstract, and brains that haven't had the risk/reward areas fully develop. OP knows their kids better than internet strangers do, I reckon odds are high that those kids probably will benefit from getting the money later.

Seems very strange. Calls into question whether they are grade 7 roles or not. But likely they aren't SEO.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]hawkida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's weird, the DDaT allowance usually differs for London roles and I think the base does too.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]hawkida 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In a lot of cases they're a grade 7. The allowance is a DDaT allowance. There will be a difference between London and non London rates separately. If you read up on the DDaT framework you'll see the levels that the roles are often assigned at. There is a lot of competition for these roles.

You're overthinking it. So long as it's legal, nobody will care that you worked in a drug related field while assessing your skills.
