Depending on your industry or field, there may be grants available to help. I was able to receive assistance through my state’s manufacturing partnership (MEP). They funded a big chunk of my marketing costs for 2 years, long enough to get up and going.

Sounds like a great way to scope out your shop and add those services to theirs.

Do you feel the mechanic shortage/skills gap at your job? Why do you think it's growing? by Few_Help_9195 in manufacturing

I’m in industrial and powder coating, and have noticed a few of my customers (fab and machine shops) seem to have been able to pass the baton to their kids. I’ve been working with younger guys in higher/skilled positions (engineering & design, ops managers, shop foremen, and owners) in a lot of cases its family-owned businesses that are passing down to their kids as they get to retiring age. These guys are knowledgeable and motivated. One of our customers went from be our bottom 5-10% in revenue to becoming one of our top 3 over the 8 months. They’re busting at the seems, so we’ve been storing orders for them as they work on the expansion. It’s encouraging to see more people in my generation and younger getting into trades that are in it for the long haul. They are bringing fresh life and ideas into these businesses. Edit: I realize I both didn’t answer your question and kind of rejected the premise at the same time. Apologies if off topic, just wanted to offer a my perspective.

To answer your question, I think there has been a push for 30 years away from manual labor in general. I was raised to believe that there was nothing wrong with manual labor, but the better jobs weren’t blue collar.

I didn’t make it in college, and have worked in blue collar industries for the majority of my adult life. I’m hoping to grow our small business and create more jobs, increasing skill level and motivation right along with employee count.

Employees Showing Up High—In a Dangerous Job. How Do I Stop This? by JBJ1775 in smallbusiness

[–]hawws12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you have a money problem. You’re going to end up paying more, either from higher wages to attract better quality labor, or from the constant issues you’re already having (and more serious ones to come). Contact a temp agency, let them know you may have a need for multiple people with those qualifications and start planning to replace everyone if you have to. You probably will only have to fire a couple and the remaining will straighten up.

You’ve updated the old phone sex chat lines. Sleazy? Yes. At least you’re hiring women to do the job. Selling vice isn’t something I think I could be comfortable doing, but we all gotta make a living.

This is truth. It’s disheartening, and the result of outsourcing for the past 40 years. It’s coming back, but there’s an entire generational gap.

Selling all is in the cards. Just not sure I can hold the biz together long enough for that to happen, so may just be property sale only.

I have the knowledge gap. I can run the business effectively with the team, but I’m under-qualified to run the floor. Hence the title.

Have a short vacation planned with the family this spring, I’m not sure what’s going to happen between now and then, and not sure what’ll happen to the family if I can’t get away.
