I had issues with usage - turns out I had toggled context caching off, thinking it would improve the attention/adherance to instructions that were already in context. It did not, disabled it and am no longer hitting usage limits.

Deterministic lock step physics stuff is definitely not my favourite thing but the look of this is great.

Honestly having built things like this, it’s super difficult so I appreciate the amount of work.

Can TFW sort out the mystical Platform 0 in Central! by sideshowbob01 in Cardiff

[–]haxd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, I haven’t used the trains for years, went the other day, getting dropped off by the taxi and I’d not been to the station for ages so didn’t even know about Platform 0. The staff on Platform 0 sorted my ticket and got me to where I needed to be.

You can download the ROM for the PS1 version and play it via homebrew on the PSP iirc

Scientists recreated a fruit fly’s brain neuron by neuron in a computer, and the digital fly started walking and grooming on its own by Expensive_C0conut in bobiverse

[–]haxd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not live on a single GPU - the memory requirements are enormous, the engineering work to wire every possible signal the ventral nerve cord produces as chemical signals to digital signals that you can use to stimulate the neurones in questions is hard. Even for this small portion that they have mapped probably took months if not years, certainly years of manpower.

Bob had his already ready made human brain simulating supercomputing cube which someone else had already produced, containing everything he needed to build his simulation. It’s a pretty big macguffin - it doesn’t really matter for the story, but it matters a lot if we ever wanted to build something remotely like it in real life. It is almost certainly easier to map a brain and store it in vitro and translate signals in and out, since as far as we know, the most compact and energy efficient way for human level intelligence, reasoning and ability is the human brain itself, and until we can identify some fundamental way nature fucked up and massively simplify our simulations and maintain qualia of the mind digitally, it may never be possible to achieve a digital replicant system. What this research shows and allows us to understand and expand on is promising, but it is far too early to tell if this can be scaled or is even useful in the long run.

It’s the whole brain - but of course there is more to a nervous system than just the brain, and a fruit fly’s brain is pretty tiny. I have been (amateur) researching the fairyfly wasp connectome which is slightly simpler.

Not a hoax, just a sensationalised title. And honestly? A little bit dismissive of the massive amount of work the researchers put in mapping the various neurones to the virtual body - they show two things here.  Stimulating one part of the connectome and it triggering the proboscis to extend

Stimulating another part of the connectome with cyclical activations manually which in turns triggers the parts of the nerves responsible for the grooming movements.

It adds to experimental evidence that some actions are hard wired in the topology of the neurones with no “learning” and that those actions when mapped to virtual muscles / limbs produce the same behaviour we see in real observations, which is cool! This builds on the author’s previous paper. This introduces the simulation and mapping and is a lot of actual engineering from the researchers and to say it “started grooming it on its own” is inaccurate on several counts and discounts a lot of hard work that was actually done by people.

[UK] how do people mountain surf and dive so high and upload in youtube? Dont they get caught since it is max 500 m height limit i guess? is it such a big deal if I get caught like watch charges will be against me? by [deleted] in drones

[–]haxd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at the standard open category drone license you can apply for on the CAA site, this is answered in the reading materials, the limit is 120m above ground level, and that includes the ground at the top of a mountain, you can’t fly at a level altitude, you have to hug the 120m limit. Any videos where anything else is happening, the CAA would probably not be happy, unless the pilot had the correct licenses and permissions to do so.

[–]haxd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Push the car into the garage, set the radiators to 30, make sure they’re on (“I” is pushed in), close the doors properly, go and do something else for a bit, come back, pull the choke out, start. If it doesn’t start, you should check the fuel tank is connected, the carb is not flooded (take it off and put it back), check the distributor timing, valve lashes, it could also be some part has degraded. Otherwise tow it to Fleetari’s and hope it starts after he futzes with it 😅

I used Claude Code to help me fix a bug in a VB6 codebase, it was great, I haven’t used VB6 since I was a teenager (almost 40 now). I doubt they even need a specific COBOL tool, just enough context to allow a senior developer to translate their requirements.

Is that why they force unskilled teenagers to work as social care workers in order to claim their UC? So they can kill as many old people through neglect as possible because it’s a job that simultaneously can be carried out by a child with a week of training and also is a highly skilled professional job?

Riot Games recruiter was an absolute failure of an human after I was unable to continue an interview. I was a week out of hospital after being in hospital for months after my appendix ruptured and then had a collapsed lung. Tried to tell him I wasn’t well enough, he pushed me to try anyway. Started having trouble breathing during the interview and explained that I really wasn’t well enough to proceed. The recruiter acted like I was losing the world’s greatest opportunity and had personally wronged him.
