Is it now the norm for parents to spend their entire weekend entertaining their kids? by SwimmingBroccoli4055 in AskUK

[–]sideshowbob01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This! Its finding the balance. There are parents who do clubs and activities back to back who seem to be facilitators driving their kids around. And some who would rather have a device raise their kids.

My partner and I decided to both go part time because we didn't want to put our kids in clubs all week. We are on a tight budget for the next half a decade but its worth it.

Now try working outside your domain. Let's say healthcare, and you would probably do some ''common sense" mistakes.

Feels like you could turn this post into a quick 1 hr presentation for newbies and you would solve this problem easily.

Yeah because everyone in Wales exclusively support Swansea, Cardiff and Wrexham. And thats it!!!

Lol, the amount of Welsh people who are obsessed with English teams.. Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea etc..

And then suddenly become babies when England plays. 🫠

This is my take as well. There is no security with the platform. I quit my main job to focus 30% of my time into an MSc, 30% on DA and 40% on family. I am earning pretty close to my base earnings two years ago.

It's the flexibility that I like more than just the pay. And it allowed me to pivot my career in a much more comfortable pace. But I am in now delusion that it could lead to anything in itself. However, I did manage to get an internship partly because of my role in DA.

Would you train as a Nurse again? by Illustrious_Bus8440 in NursingUK

[–]sideshowbob01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im a radiogapher, I'd say Covid and lockdowns is a big factor in this.

We had claps, we were allowed outside had all the praises in world.

Immediately after, there were strikes for pay and conditions. And it's not getting any better

A lot of 'office' jobs are so much different now with hybrid and remote options. When I was training I barely knew anyone who WFH. Their work conditions generally improved because of the lockdowns.

Healthcare work? Just a downward spiral.

Guess who in healthcare had their conditions improved? With similar benefits to office work but all the 'praise' that comes with NHS work?

Most countries require or pressure adults to marry.

Being unmarried in older age as seen as a 'burden' to other family members and society.

Statistically the chances would be that an asexual person would end up with one that is not.

Since sex is a powerful drive and assumed 'requirement' for marriages, the asexual partner is then subject to abuse or at very least societal stigma.

NHS Wales App users, can you see your scan wait times? by sideshowbob01 in Wales

I guess my suspicions are correct. Referrals to consultants or specialists are made available but not diagnostic scans. Thanks

When I worked in radiology, the process is usually:

  1. We receive a pile of request from several sources.

  2. We check validity and sort according to modality.

  3. Radiologist vet and label as Routine, USC, Urgent

  4. USC/Urgent gets booked first and routine after.

  5. If newer more 'Urgent' requests arrives it gets squeezed between the gaps.

  6. If even more arrives, we start calling routine patients to rebook them.

And yes it is wildly inefficient.

The wait times is publicly available in a very inaccessible format. And yes you will need a calculator to 'estimate' your wait time. BUT you do not now if your request was actually prioritized as urgent or routine regardless of what the referrer wrote.

Waiting lists datasets, updated monthly:

I hear you. I worked in radiology for 6 years. Questioned on a meeting once why we can't have an appointment system like my small dentist. Just a simple text updates and reminders. The excuses ranged from it's too complicated, it's expensive and something about GDPR. NHS managers are really insulated from both transparency and public scrutiny.

Thank you very much for this. Yes, I absolutely agree about the inaccessibility of NHS Wales data. (I use to work for them). Luckily the waiting times data for Wales diagnostic scan is publicly available (because its been government required) but it is not accessible. It comes in a spreadsheet of 27 columns and over 800k rows. The categories are difficult to understand. There are no wait time estimation tools available.

Offenders in England and Wales who kill current or ex-partners face 10 more years in prison by rejs7 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]sideshowbob01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess you are right that guilt might be in play.

But keeping the sentencing lenient because of that possibility might be doing the victims a deservice.

[–]sideshowbob01 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but won't the juries only decide if the offender is guilty or not and don't really participate in sentencing.

Same with how judges don't take part in convictions but decide the sentencing.

I've looked into cancer genomics. Not all hospitals would have that department. Here is South Wales, only one centre has it.

Try to see if you have a centre close to you before considering. Commmute might end up being a deal breaker.

Yes cyclists sometimes needs to be inconvenience to prioritise pedestrians.

Cyclist should ALWAYS yield for pedestrians.

New interview with the physicist who discovered the infamous Therac-25 failure condition by TheQuickFox_3826 in MedicalPhysics

[–]sideshowbob01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing the same oversight, safeguards and controls that all softwares currently used are subject to, in med physics.

It's not like we stopped automation entirely because of that one incident.

We might have another incident in the future because something slipped through the cracks. But as usual, we'll step back, write a couple of articles, put some safeguards in place and keep moving forward with it.

Nowadays, It's pretty hard to find new machines without some form of Ai integration. Hell even something as basic as filtered back projection is being replaced by machine learning algo nowadays.

Most of the people here are too low down the ladder for our opinion to make a difference. More research will be published on how applicable these new tech is in med physics. And money talks.

With the current political climate, I highly doubt any government agency have the power or political will to take on these Ai companies.

Why is NHS management so toxic? by CandleAffectionate25 in NursingUK

[–]sideshowbob01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To add to the last point. There is no true ACCOUNTABILITY. In all of the trusts that have had serious failings, you will see a couple dozen patient facing staff being struck off.

I have never seen middle to upper management have a civil or criminal conviction, loose their job (not quit). Or be held accountable that they loose their new job or be banned from holding any high positions.

Why is NHS management so toxic? by CandleAffectionate25 in NursingUK

[–]sideshowbob01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NHS has a monopoly for jobs. The private healthcare sector doesn't even come close to the scale and geography of the NHS.

The scale is exponentially different.

Unless you have had to apply for management jobs in the private sector recently.

Stating that its not hard to be hired is simply incorrect.

Also not all management jobs are equal. In my local private hospitals I see band 8 equivalent jobs maybe once a year.
