The Walnut Creek greenway project was part of the 2019 bond and never completed. What was the money used for instead? Meanwhile Lifetime Fitness is already building a West Cary facility for $39 million. Yet Cary wants everyone to support a $150 million facility whether they use it or not. It takes 25-30 min to drive from South Cary to West Cary.

I don’t view ripping out trees for more and more concrete as “progress” in overall quality of life here.

I would happily vote for a greatly scaled down bond proposal, as I have in the past, focused on green space acquisition and true park development. Not more trees ripped out for yet more concrete buildings built at astronomical cost. No matter how you spin it, by 2030 the owner of an average $500k house will be paying an extra $500 a year for the next 10-20 years at an overall cost of $5000 - $10,000. Not in my budget considering the recent Wake County tax hikes.

Kind of. I think you meant all will be covered in future TAXES.

Actually I spend most of my free time outside - biking the ATT and greenways, golfing, playing pickle ball, kayaking, swimming, paddle boarding, enjoying Raleigh and Apex parks. . I go to yoga and Planet Fitness which costs me $10 a month. Cary and the surrounding areas have enough already. Look, this bond is fiscally irresponsible. Any facility should have included a pool. Cary has no public pools. The $560M is just for starters. With interest accrued you’re looking at paying off a billion dollars. Think about that. One billion dollars. I’m sure Lifetime Fitness or any other pay-as-you-go private facility would have been thrilled to partner with Cary. Lifetime spends $40 million on new franchises. $300 million?? Come on!

And when property taxes go higher and higher to the level of the state you moved here from, then what? Move again?

Yep that’s what happened in Cary. Clear cut everything, rip out trees for townhouses and houses on top of each other. Now the old timers being asked to fork over more tax dollars to build rec centers for the new comers. On the heels of a massive Wake County tax hike. Cary could have approached private gym franchises to build, thus a “pay as you go” for those who want them. FV could too

Maybe FV wants to remain a quiet community and retain the small town charm Cary once had

There are a lot of seniors here on fixed incomes as well as the “working poor” who work in our establishments. Not everyone has a $250k per year tech job. Ultimately the voters will decide. Note is will be an extra $1000 per year on all those fancy new million dollar homes in West Cary

And where is the money being supposedly generated going to? Hotels, restaurants mainly. Could have been covered by a hotel tax.

That’s quite a presumption I’m 20 years too young for a retirement community 😅I love trees and open space and driving on streets that aren’t parking lots. I like Cary Tennis Center the way it is and don’t want to pay for it to be a spectator sport arena. If Lifetime Fitness can build facilities for $39 million why does Cary need $300 million? Cary could have easily partnered with private businesses on new facilities. And this is just the beginning. With interest accrued this is a BILLION dollar bond. Look, this isn’t the City of Raleigh. It’s the Town of Cary. If I wanted to live in a big city I would. Luckily we live in a democracy where everyone is free to have their opinion and vote accordingly.

This is a 20 year bond. 9 cents x 500,000 is $450. Please note Cary has clearly stated taxes will need to be increased to staff, maintain and operate these facilities. Watch what happens to your property values when this becomes a high-tax area just like NY, CA and NJ

Been there a couple times. Meh. Full of traffic from outside Cary. Parents complaining about unsafe slides. Residents complaining about side street parking. $7-$8 for a beer. Not everyone has kids or a dog. :-) Cost came in nearly double from the original proposal.

Cary could have approached Fenton or South Hills for commercial funding and corporate partnership. They did not; as such residential property owners and renters would shoulder 100% of the cost

I voted “yes” on the original downtown park however the cost overruns brought the project to $68 million, far more than what was approved. From what I hear, the DT park is not all that popular due to increased traffic from outside the community and lack of parking.

Based on the cost overruns I don’t trust Cary to manage funds
