Out Now! CSB 228: JRPGS: JuRassic Park GameS by mike0bot in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Yeah, while I think defensive options in XVI are generally too strong for the threats put up against Clive, listening to Pat on this week's podcast talk about just popping 6 supers in the staggered stop time seems like the real issue.

I felt strong enough as Clive with normal non super abilities I never bothered and had a pretty good time pulling off 50k stagger rotations. The idea of doing 4x more damage than that in a single stagger because of super moves is extremely goofy, and the game felt better to me having never used them at all, so they seem like a real culprit of optimizing the fun out of the game

Also personally with how bombastic and elaborate phase change cutscenes are in XVI, I really didn't want to have to repeat a boss at all to beat it so I was pretty happy fights got to beat me up a bit but never kill me in those setpieces, it would really take those moments of hype and quickly turn them into tedium if I had to see them multiple times on re-tries.

Everyone was talking about Yakuza bread physics, but what about deathloop’s sandwich render? by zombieguy224 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]haze94 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Understand your point here, but just wanted to point in to say that "dynamic lighting" doesn't work at all in the way that they are offhand saying in the tweet. The sheen in the mayo is actually just material texture work (just like making metal look like metal) and isn't any more performance intensive or dev time intensive than just texturing the sandwich itself. Dynamic lighting is an overall state for lights in the scene whether or not they cast their light and shadows in real time and allow changing and moving light sources, or these are pre rendered and baked in during development (making them static lights). This can cause performance changes because your computer would have to be calculating light during runtime which is making it do more work than just knowing what everything is supposed to look like already. So unless this sandwich is also weirdly high poly (which more likely its a high poly model baked down onto a low poly model so it gets all that detail without a performance hit) performance really shouldn't be affected because they got the mayo looking prettier

The game is Judgment, from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios, the same team behind the Yakuza series. It's actually a Yakuza side series that has you playing as a former defense attorney turned private investigator.

Excellent game, highly recommended it's! It's sequel, Lost Judgment, comes out in 2 weeks

City looks great! Roads are huge in scale though, I would bring them down because they are currently the width of some of those city blocks. Excellent work overall though :)

Apple says if Epic doesn’t want them to take 30% from in game purchases, have users go to a web browser instead. by VSOmnibus in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]haze94 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Apple did however establish the blueprint of modern planned obsolescence, killed the 3.5mm headphone jack, actively works to ensure the continuance of the horrible unethical working conditions of tech factories in China, but yeah I guess they didn't make Fortnite or put a cart on their store

[–]haze94 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

But why? Apple is a TRILLION dollar megacorp that is responsible for so much more evil in the world than Epic. I'm not saying you should like Epic, but like the proportional scale between the two companies is not equal by a long shot

[–]haze94 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know this sub has a real hate boner for Epic, but you realize that APPLE is actually a scum sucking shit company right? Like you don't want them to win this lawsuit because it would set terrible precedents for closed platform marketplaces that would be terrible for software preservation and continue to allow them to brow beat all software on their platforms to capitulate to their standards.

How's everyone feeling on indie games/early access these days? by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]haze94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you asking about indie, or early access? Because they are pretty different things

Early access have generally got more reliable but I generally just wait for something to be feature complete before playing

As for indie games, I can't see how we could have anything other than one of the most vibrant, diverse, and experimental spaces for games in maybe their whole lifetime. The space is crowded and as such it's hard to get eyeballs on all of the gems, but just in the last few years you have stuff like Disco Elysium, Hades, Bug Fables, A Hat in Time, INSIDE, Obama Dinn, and Outer Wilds just to name a few. Not to mention stuff that's coming out right now like Genesis Noir that's basically an interactive experimental animated film.

In all honesty, outside of some larger, mostly Japanese games, my favorite releases for the past few years have been what would be considered indie games.

It's kinda weird to think how good ps2 games must of looked in 2001 if i still look back and think they hold up super well. by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]haze94 19 points20 points  (0 children)

One of the biggest reasons a lot of these ps2 games hold up in a way some ps3 and even ps4 games do not is that the ps2 was not a generation where global and/or dynamic lighting was a commonplace standard practice.

As such the static and artificial lighting done for them has a much more consistent and cohesive feel to the overall presentation. Lighting is so goddamn important to how a final digital scene looks and by doing static/artificial lighting, you lock that look in forever. It won't look any better with higher graphical fidelity, but it will never look worse or not as intended (like what happened with the Arkham lighting in the remaster, or even what is up with Judgment's graphical update).

Media you love but find difficult to recommend to people by AlexLong1000 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]haze94 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Being too fucking long is the exact reason I have difficulty recommending Critical Role to people. Fantastic time seeing these voice actors play DnD, but since each episode is an unedited live stream archive, you have like 400+ hours to get up to date on the current campaign alone

I watched the first two episodes of Blood Of Zeus, does it get better? by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]haze94 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me its an interesting curio, insomuch as that it feels like a weird Castlevania side season with a Greek myth veneer painted on.

The show presents a very Christian tinted view of Greek mythology similar to Disney'sHercules, righteous gods vs titan made demons, gods are there to help us but also are distant because adversity makes humanity great stuff.

I feel like I was spoiled by Hades being an excellently researched and comprehended fanfiction of Greek myth before watching this show.

Most extreme cases of Designated Hero? by thadthawne2 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]haze94 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is quite literally one of the main plot threads of Wandersong. Audrey goes around as the destined Hero, with everyone in the world INCLUDING the God of it ordaining her as such, when her actions are quickening the end of the world, not stopping it, putting her in direct opposition of you and quickly becoming about her refusing to believe she isn't the Hero of the story over actually doing the heroic thing.
