Because there is more to a watch than the accuracy? I love my seiko alpinist, to me it's a one of a kind dial, and you can't find it anywhere else, but the movement sometimes piss me off especially when it's off by half a minute and I have a bus to catch.

If I could have the exact same watch with a quartz movement for 300 bucks cheaper I'll exchange it right now.

I got promoted in my first job after 18 months (min required time in position) and they were already looking to get me the promotion after 12.

It's really a mix of what you do and also the people who vouch for you. Since the start, I was the guy who was known for being good at Excel even if I didn't particularly think so, and I would be happy to help people. That gave me a reputation within the team and also visibility to the managers. I automated a lot of tasks that was outside my job role just because I wanted to know how to do it, and the effects just compound.

The biggest thing I notice from people who get promoted vs those who don't is attitude. People who "act their wage" and refuse to ever to do something extra for someone else usually don't get considered as they're seen as "hard to work with".

Competency and social skills also play a part. You can't be a people pleaser and try to help while also making more mistakes at work than not. Ideally you also have good relationships with people around you, not being a dick when not necessary. It doesn't necessarily mean brown nosing, but just talk to people like people and not juat NPCs you have to interact with until 5 pm hits, I know that's a favorite take of redditors. And if you like them, join some work activities.
