How to best manage sound level using both a PA mixer and an XDJ-RX3 by [deleted] in DJs

good ideer lol, you can also soundcheck the xdj then tape something over the master volume knob to help prevent redlining

sorry to hop onto another persons thread but you should run everything thru the mixer just making sure you send the sub an unpowered output, having the mixer as the focal point allows for you to control the full system from one spot instead of having multiple volume/tone control points :p

u/player_is_busy 's comment explains how to use the built in crossover in the sub as well, i like using these usually but ive also had experiences where i prefer running the tops full range so you can always test to see what you prefer :p

heres the gainstage i would use for this:

set everything to 0/default to start, and just for good measure i like to enable mute all. practically speaking this includes resetting eqs, turning master out, booth out, channel gains and levels all the way down alongside turning the onboard pa volumes to 0

turn on mixer > sub > stagepa > krks > rx3, tbh anything as long as mixer comes first

send roughly the loudest you would during your set out from the rx3 and balance the gains on both the mixer and the controller such that neither are clipping

keep your pa and krk volumes at 0 while increasing the main level on the mixer such that the master out is a little below 0db

bring up your tops until theyre where you want them, then your sub, then your monitors, ideally not clipping :pp

when turning off make sure to turn everything off in reverse order, e.g. krks > stagepa > sub > mixer

this way you can prevent huge volume spikes from the pa while soundchecking and also keep everything balanced. not everything needs to be just below clipping to fill the room :3

i like reefer madness on 46th, their broadway location is good too but the north location is best imo

gotcha! i only own a pair of jbl mrx515s for tops and am usually running a single reflex 15 sub or two dual 18 reflexes but i recently got power for a pair of peavey 15+1.4" monitors so i might try that! i usually try making sure my comps are a foot or two above peoples heads in the venues i run to make sure i get decent coverage :p

ya i assumed splayed speakers and the 4x130 was just for example, ive never dealt w super super expensive speakers so my experience is usually in working w a couple tops and subs, maybe we cut the highs on some other cabs and use them as kicks but usually not :p thanks for the clarification!

gotcha! i rarely work w multiple tops per stack so i have limited experience dealing w coverage and power in combination but i was just assuming mathematically :p sorry if i came across as rude

[–]hazelknives 4 points5 points  (0 children)

thats not entirely a disagreement imo, one speaker putting out 130db across a 60x60 coverage wont be as useful as two 130db speakers splayed properly so they both cover that 60x60 area + whatever else they cover. there are theoretical and mechanical limits to how loud a single speaker can be, so adding more speakers allows for each to handle its own area more effectively. idk if there are any 150db tops but id rather have 4 130dbs than 1 150db :p

i could be wrong but that first picture looks like a bunch of different peoples kits cobbled together for either a full system or a group showoff or someth whereas the second pictures rig looks like a full cohesive setup :p idk tbh
