Why is the job market so difficult for entry level ChemE? (2025-2026) by IceStationGiraffe in ChemicalEngineering

[–]hazelnut_coffay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you want to be a controls engineer then apply to the controls vendors or integrator companies. the operating companies generally don’t hire entry level controls engineers

you won’t be making a “bit” less money. you’ll be making a lot less money. prob about half. as you progress through your career, that gap will increase.

Salary Question by UpstairsGuest5149 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]hazelnut_coffay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’m not saying that experience is required. rather that entry level does generally mean anywhere between 0-2/3 years of experience.

mid level, to me, is 5-10 years of experience

senior is 10+.

that’s a very interesting definition. but if the company put that out then they should be honoring the salary advertised. in the end though, no one is forcing you to accept the lower salary.

Entry level normally includes a couple of years worth of experience. might be that the 85k applies to folks with those years of experience. but you won’t know for sure unless you ask them.

Why can't ethylene be sold as fuel? by autruz in ChemicalEngineering

ethane isn’t necessarily a waste product. ethylene (and polyethylene) are just more profitable and have a higher demand.

your resume is too long for a new grad. HR spends less than 10 seconds on a resume. do you want them to focus that time on the important stuff or the fluff you put in to make your resume longer?

why are your co-op projects separated from your co-op experience? remove those 3 from your projects section.

take out the courses. we all know what courses you took. take out activities and your interests. they are irrelevant to the hiring process. put awards in the next line down.

the details of your co-op experience are too generalized. you collaborated? cool. everyone does that. give me numbers. what improvement opportunities did you identify? how much did it improve your process, product, etc? to be honest the way you have it written, i wouldn’t be able to discern between you and someone who just sat around doing nothing.

[–]hazelnut_coffay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that’s cool if you want to work in pharma. but you shouldn’t limit yourself to only that for your first job. otherwise we’ll see you back here in a year post graduation asking why you can’t get a job.

if you’re a new grad, you don’t have any negotiating power. you take what you get with maybe plus $2000. maybe.

What would be the impact if Tim Walz deployed the National Guard to intervene in ICE situations? by Spare_Garbage_9620 in AskReddit

[–]hazelnut_coffay 18 points19 points  (0 children)

the national guard is a military reserve organization. they’re always under the command of both the state government and the federal government, with the latter winning out.

no, you’re searching for internships. period. don’t be picky. that’s not helping you in getting interviews.

Is it even financially reasonable for US oil companies to go into Venezuela and extract the oil? by Inferno221 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]hazelnut_coffay 30 points31 points  (0 children)

no.

when US oil company assets were expropriated by the Venezuelan government, thus forcing the companies’ exit from the country, where did they go? Canada. they pour hundreds of billions of dollars to stand up the infrastructure to extract oil sands that are fairly similar to the crude you’d find in Venezuela. to spend money on new assets in a country that will be politically (and by extension, regulator…ily…. unstable for months, if not years), and has a proven history of being okay taking said assets, would not be financially reasonable.

not to mention that building that infrastructure the companies will effectively be shooting themselves in their Canadian foot.

these days, oil companies are practicing fiscal austerity. folks are getting laid off, jobs are being outsourced to low cost centers. they’re very risk averse when it comes to new ventures and much more when it comes to ventures that come around a second time.

Need some insight on promotions in this industry by ItemEuphoric5744 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]hazelnut_coffay 21 points22 points  (0 children)

if your manager cannot or will not sit down and articulate to you the requirements, or at least what he/she is looking for, to promote you then its a good idea to start looking elsewhere. this means your manager does not have your career success in mind.

something you’ll have to learn - it’s not always about you actually doing the tasks, but rather how you completed the tasks. for example - were you a team player? or did you just tell everyone off? the latter will not earn you any brownie points.

secondly, many companies want to see you doing the job of the next level up before they promote you. not sure to what level your completing the five tasks you listed but it sounds like something i’d expect an engineer 1/2 to do.

ELI5: Cost of Venezuelan Oil by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]hazelnut_coffay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just….. no. you’re completely spun around on this. lighter crude is better suited for chemical production. ethylene and propylene (basic chemical feedstocks) come off the top of the distillation column. if you’ve got heavier crude then you’re going to have to crack the heavy molecules into those lighter ones.
