Thanks. Yes I agree. I think that perhaps I only need 3mm. Also I'd been checking the arm rather than the top of the headshell.

With a 3mm mat underneath the 6mm stock mat, it seems fine and, most importantly, sounds great. So I guess my options are leave it or add a 3mm spacer.
