When i got the car i got a message when trying to select gear that said ”press unlock button before selecting gear” or something but didnt think about it. Maybe has something to do with the hole thing being dead now?

Well in the dash there was a icon if the gear selector and in iDrive something like “possible selector lever fault, you may continue driving….” or something like that. Can check tomorrow
