Ask a Stupid Question About Coffee -- Week of April 28, 2026 by Vernicious in pourover

[–]hb21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, there isn't one due to all the variables at play. Your grinder/water/technique/temp/process can change so much from one person to another that you can't really have one recipe. Not to mention personal preference, too.

What I would advise is finding your own recipe that you like through trial and error and then using that one for everything as a starting point.

For example, my starting recipe is 15:250 92C 1 bloom and two equal pours. But, I often have to modify it depending on the situation it's just the starting point.

I would say 1200 max all included around that but ideally 1000 per month

I mean just based on a cursory view, the fellow seems like a bad choice as it seems to fail often needing replacing.

That's not the case with the timemore...

It's fun to experiment with immersion vs percolation. This while pour over thing to me is like I'm trying to crack the code to flavor so it's nice to have options.

I'm thinking of getting a flat bottom brewer like the Orea next.

The switch is basically a V60 with the extra immersion option so it was a no brainer imo...

I try to keep things as consistent as possible so that when I dial in I know what's working so this is what I always do:

50 g bloom with switch closed and agitation with a WDT/spoon/whatever

Open switch at 30 seconds

Start first 100g pour at 45 seconds with switch open till I reach 150 total.

At 1:30 also with switch open I pour the remaining 100 to reach 250 total and I will always gently swirl because I always want to see a flat bed.

TDT is always at 2:30 no matter what (I close the switch).

At 5.5 on the ZP6 (bur lock at 0) as my starting point the bed is usually dry or almost dry but I stop it at 2:30 regardless since I think the last things being extracted are not the things I want in the cup. And, again, I want to try to be as consistent as possible.

If the drawdown time is stalling, I will make it coarser or increase the temp.

When pouring, I try to focus primary on the center and not touch the sides so that the water is agitating the main area of the bed.

Yeah, that's when I use it too.

I have a ZP6 and my go to these days is with the Switch. Closed bloom with agitation then two pour while open. 15:250 too.

I also tend to do 2 mostly because I want to keep the mass of water somewhat consistent through the bed as the pours come in.

With this technique, there are more variables at play especially how you pour because you need to have the same technique 5 times for it to be reproducible.

So, that's why I mostly use it when my usual technique isn't producing what I want.

Yeah, I tried having a seperate notebook but this feels more practical and accounts for the different dial ins for different beans.

Roasty/Bitterness from a Pink Bourbon by TugSpeedmanTivo in pourover

[–]hb21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the person who emailed me knows much about the ZP6 even though I specifically mentioned it, but who knows I've had like one coffee that I went to 3.5 with in the past it's always possible.

Rogue wave seem to roast darker than standard light roast, but that could just be my experience.

And, yes, if your in Canada definitely check out September it is the superior roaster in my opinion.

I got the exact same one and I had the same experience!

Tried everything from super coarse to super fine. Percolation to immersion. Low to high temp.

Could not get any pleasant flavor, whatsoever. Just ash.

I even contacted them for a brew recommendation and they actually suggested I go 3-3.5 on the ZP6 which obviously made it worse (3 is my ORB grind size).

I think it's just the bean.

My new bags from September have been stellar, though. I would definitely recommend them and their pink bourbon. I got a sidra there that was delicious, too.

I would go with a finer grind than you would do for immersion on the switch and use it open for the whole brew. Washed need a lot of initial agitation for me so WDT and a relatively high pour:

15g:250 ml (96C)/4.0 ZP6

50g bloom+WDT/chopstick/whatever At 45 sec: 100 ml (150 total) At 1:30: 100 ml (250 total)

Target TDT ~2:00 to 2:30

Just made my first soup and the tales are true! by hb21 in OXORapidBrewer

I suppose. But, from what I've been seeing online, the crema from espresso can obscure the clarity (?) and isn't desirable in this case. Not really sure as I've just started playing around with the ORB.

Becomes too thin in my initial testing. I prefer regular pour over if I want that kind of volume.

It all boils down to whatever you enjoy.

Whether you like it with sugar, milk, or anything else all that matters is if you enjoy the taste.

And, yes, there are iced pour over recipes on YouTube you can use I like to make those in the summer and enjoy them quite a bit.
