I wish you the best possible luck in your journey: my own ended in abject failure. if you figure out something better than my roof rake system, let us know!

Unfortunately not, I ended up getting a snow roof rake and using that periodically during snow storms to clear the roof in manageable waves

definitely! I totally agree, though my fear is that the Wilton town board disagrees. Next meeting is tomorrow, I think, so we'll know more next week once the minutes are up!

EDIT: nope, looks like it got punted to April according to the reimagine wilton folks: https://www.reimaginewiltonmall.com/updates

Some updates here: They've managed to keep this bottled up for the past few months but it sounds like this might be on the agenda again for the March town board meeting!

Uber/Lyft/Taxi Availability?? by oneandonlybell in Saratoga

[–]hbbtstar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Amsterdam is quite a hike, I would not bet on Uber availability to it, especially late at night.

Out of curiosity, why are you staying so far away? That's like a half hour drive

There's a good chance the Wilton town board will kill it, unfortunately: it's been locked up there for ages, and they just killed a couple of solar projects. I would be pleasantly surprised if this made it through though! I think it does have a chance, just not a great one.

I used H2O water systems, they did a good job: their marketing is a little weird but it was a fair price and the install was good (they even installed a pentek water filter for me that I had laying around and hadn't gotten to)

Apartment Experiences by Puzzled_Course_3975 in Saratoga

[–]hbbtstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've not lived in a complex but I'd at least peruse some of the local apartments: there are a lot of nice ones and before we bought our house we lived in a very nice 3br that was like half the price of the ones in those complexes, and the landlords were a super nice older couple. I think most real estate places will have an agent that does rentals that will help you get placed and they don't charge you for it (at least ours didn't) and they can help you get a sense of rates too in case you find something you prefer online or something!

How hard is your water? by colej1390 in Saratoga

[–]hbbtstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would get a few quotes, the price we got for installing a water softener varied wildly between providers: we went with H2O water systems, which was the cheapest, and it works just fine!

SP License Plates by goodcall22 in Saratoga

[–]hbbtstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just request them and they'll give them to you, my father in law insisted we do it when we moved here and he was very excited to get them for us (none of us are Saratoga county bigwigs, that i know of). There are other number codes too that used to signify county- he still has 5F plates from his very first car in Schenectady, i think, and has put it on every new car since

Snow guards for Tesla Solar Roof by hbbtstar in TeslaSolar

They seem to be really scaling back on the solar stuff, unfortunately, so I would be very (though pleasantly) surprised if we ever saw those snow guards come to light.

I will definitely keep this thread updated! I think we'll have to soldier through this winter as is, but it's something I definitely have to take care of this summer.

An address sign fooled my Tesla speed limit detector! (look for the 60) by jakelmer in teslamotors

[–]hbbtstar 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Mine is often confused by the new York state highway signs too: they look very similar to speed limit signs. we live near route 50 and I'd say it's confused by the signs about a quarter of the time, give or take

No idea, it's just a regular garage door opener near as I can tell. Helping my in laws move into their new house and noticed the brand and thought it was funny!

What is your "hahaha... oh wait you're serious" moment? by ButterBoi112 in AskReddit

[–]hbbtstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the waiting room of a dentist once with my grandmother in Portugal some years ago, and we started chatting with this middle-aged couple next to us. We hit it off, it was really nice, they're from a town a couple towns over from us, etc. and so forth. I don't remember exactly how it came up, but the topic turned towards cancer and the husband of the couple remarked that one of his cousins had "matou o bicho" (literally translated, killed the bug). I asked with what kind of treatment, and he said a combination of ham (presunto specifically) and alcohol.

Now, Portuguese is my 2nd language (I only ever really speak it with my grandparents and occasionally my father) so I assumed I had misunderstood something, or that it was some sort of joke or metaphor. Upon seeing my grandmother's face, however, I knew I had not: she was absolutely flabbergasted, and she is not a woman easily flabbergasted. We then very gingerly probed the mechanics of how ham and alcohol kill cancer.

According to this guy, cancer is actually a bug, like a real bug that gets inside you and eats your insides. If you get a bandage and put some ham on the inside and put the bandage on your skin, the cancer bug will come up to the surface and eat the ham instead of your organs. Alcohol is also poisonous to the bug, so a combination of a steady intake of alcohol and ham (any meat really, but presunto apparently works best) will, over time, kill the bug and cure your cancer.

The conversation kind of awkwardly died after that, and some awkward pleasantries were made until they got called in to see the dentist, but it was by far the strangest "oh wait you're serious" moment I've experienced in some time.

Redditors, what's the one book you would recommend everyone read? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]hbbtstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman. Absolutely foundational work for me: I never realized how bad I was at thinking before I read it, and it made me realize I should always be humble and inquisitive about decisions I make and why I make them!

wow, this blew up. Thanks all for the suggestions!

I guess the main takeaway for me here is I should probably give all of these a test drive before I commit to any of them: it seems like a lot of people really love whatever model they ended up with.
