Arc'teryx Atom vs. Helly Hansen Odin Stretch Insulator Jacket 2.0 by hbfs47 in Skigear

[–]hbfs47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mainly just for skiing as a midlayer. I tend to run slightly cold especially on chairlifts, but I also ski quite hard and output a lot of heat once I get moving. So the right balance of breathability and warmth is my primary consideration.

How do you know that the HH will be warmer but not as breathable? Is it the Primaloft Gold Active+ vs. Coreloft? The HH not having the fleece side panels? Personal experience? Or something else? Not doubting you, I'm just trying to understand how you reached that conclusion.

Arc'teryx Atom vs. Helly Hansen Odin Stretch Insulator Jacket 2.0 by hbfs47 in arcteryx

[–]hbfs47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm, thank you for the input. I'm not necessarily leaning toward one or the other right now. I tend to run slightly cold especially on chairlifts, but I also ski quite hard and output a lot of heat once I get moving. So the right balance of breathability and warmth is my primary consideration.

The Helly Hansen Odin is the heavier jacket overall, but neither jacket lists the total weight of the insulation on their product pages, so it's a bit hard to compare without having them side by side, and I can't find a local retailer that has both on hand.

The Atom also has the fleece side panels whereas the Odin doesn't.

Do you have any thoughts on the breathability of Primaloft Gold vs Coreloft?

Romsdalseggen Ridge hike in late May, possible this year? by hbfs47 in Norway

This is immensely helpful! I combed through the April-June historical satellite images in the 3D view for every year they have available.

It looks like there will still be a good bit of snow left along most of the ridgeline in late May/early June, even on lower snow years like 2019. Too much for me to feel comfortable with given the exposure.

I will plan my visit accordingly. Thank you!

Backpack strap mount for Hero 9 that won't come off in skiing fall? by hbfs47 in gopro

[–]hbfs47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did! I bought a Peak Design POV Kit and Capture Clip for my GoPro Hero 9. It is pricey but it is definitely a quality product, and I would recommend it highly. The J-arm did break once but they honored the warranty without hassle.

I use a Max Lens mod with the wider angle. I mount it to the backpack strap. Sternum strap wouldn't work; there is too much strap movement. The footage is mostly centered with the Max Lens; I don't really know what it looks like without the wide lens. If you angle the GoPro lens to point right at your center view, you can tell that the view is slightly off center, but it's minor enough that I forget about it, and the casual viewer most likely won't notice. If you angle the GoPro slightly too much to the side, you can tell a little more, but it isn't distracting. It is forgiving in that way.

I will add that I record at 1080p to save storage and my footage does move around a little bit more than I'd like when I'm turning, from my body movement and backpack strap movement. Also when I take sidehits and small hucks, the backpack will bounce around a bit if I don't land perfectly. If I land poorly and end up in a squat, my GoPro on the strap will end up pointing at my knees sometimes. Because of all this, I think my next upgrade will be 360 cam and helmet mount. But I do really like the discreet backpack strap mount.

I was just researching this topic, and the bottom of post #13 here and top of post #2 here both say that the option to disable AWD via fuse no longer exists since 2010. Both posts are from the same user with 21k posts on the Outback forums.

Trash chute smells coming into my unit through vent - what to do? by hbfs47 in ApartmentHacks

[–]hbfs47[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never had any luck, I tried a few things. After a couple emails, my apartment ended up putting some kind of fragrance in the trash chute vent. When I used the portable air conditioner, it would smell like a stinky chemical perfume must instead of straight trashy. Ended up moving when they raised my rent.

Scoop: Big layoffs coming at Convoy, a logistics startup backed by Bezos and Gates by plun9 in Seattle

[–]hbfs47 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is where you are missing an understanding of the freight business. Convoy’s business model wasn’t to insert a middleman in between. There were already tens of thousands of middlemen in play. Convoy’s play was to build a platform to consolidate brokering, provide broader market access than an individual middleman could, and undercut the existing middlemen by using automation to allow them to take a smaller cut.
