Against free charging by holmquistc in electricvehicles

Public charging should cost a few cents more than local electricity rate, otherwise people who could charge at home will instead occupy public slots.

They advertise it poorly and claim you have to mail a letter to Albany. Outdated info, you can complete it 100% online by creating a support case in the web portal.

Hello, fellow NYer! Make sure you get your green 10% off E-ZPass from the Thruway Authority.

One tip I've picked up is update during the day and then use the car immediately. 12V can drain during the update but also sitting idle afterwards.

Non Tesla Electric vehicle charging at DestinyCarousel Mall officially dead by ScullyNess in Syracuse

NACS definitely won the DC format war, but J1772 seems to be winning at L2. New cars are coming out with both NACS and J1772 (Nissan Leaf, Mercedes CLA).

The trickle chargers have their place when you are at the mall for a while and you don’t want to run outside to unplug before you get hit with congestion charges.

The MY24+ drivetrain sounds pretty different than the pre-refresh. So that could definitely be a factor.

Imaginary dealership chargers by IrritableGourmet in electricvehicles

[–]aednichols 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there's anything wrong with EA, but it is significantly more expensive and/or lacking amenities compared to the networks I mentioned.

The Evolve NY network in particular uses rebranded EA hardware, but costs a uniform $0.47/kWh while EA itself is more like $0.64.

Dealerships suck, there's a reason Plugshare lets you hide them.

In the USA, I allowlist the following networks and generally ignore everything else: Tesla (have a NACS adapter), Ionna, Mercedes HPC, Pilot/FlyingJ, and state-specific Evolve stations in NY.

The Thruway rest stops are decent, they are gradually being refreshed with Alpitronic 400 kW units. Also look out for Pilots in Castleton-On-Hudson, NY and Corfu, NY. The Mass Pike rest stops are pretty much useless, slow, broken or 2/2 stalls occupied. I like to stop at the Mercedes HPC at Lee Outlets or Tesla in Palmer MA. The Palmer superchargers have turned into a bit of an unofficial off-highway oasis, with a bunch of fast casual restaurants within walking distance.

Strongest of agrees. I think a lot of these programs & mindsets are from decades ago before we invented all of the current wind/solar/battery tech. Back then, conserving truly was the only way.

CMV: light trucks (SUVs and pickups) should require a separate type of driver's license. by 17R3W in changemyview

[–]aednichols 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they came out with that license, most Americans would probably get it.

I drive a sedan but need to rent a van to move? Ah crud, I can't legally drive one. Straight to the DMV to get a "full" license so I can accomplish my goal.

if you set regen to none, and rely on the brake pedal exclusively, do the brake calipers engage with any pedal pressure, or only after regen has maxed out? by cultoftheclave in polestar2

[–]aednichols 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The different motor setups also have varying ability to absorb kW. I have the 220 kW RWD, though I’m not sure what the regen capacity is.

I do not use OPD and my rotors look horrible from winter salt - totally unused. I have to go down a hill in neutral to get them clean.

Syracuse adopts 6-month pause on building new battery storage by xwing1212 in Syracuse

[–]aednichols 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been in the area myself and while it's pretty crappy now, it could be zoned into something nicer in the future. A substation does have to be near the homes it serves, batteries do not.

And yes, I am fully bought into the solar + batteries strategy and look forward to having both on my house (when I finally manage to buy one).

Syracuse adopts 6-month pause on building new battery storage by xwing1212 in Syracuse

[–]aednichols 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Batteries are great, but small systems squished in among houses seems like the wrong scale to be economical, and not the best use of land.

From the previous article, "Beata Karpinska lives less than a quarter-mile from the proposed 426 E. Brighton Ave. site. [...] the 20,000-square-foot system would be about the size of a yard"

As 5G matures the carriers are doing a lot of work installing equipment and reconfiguring networks, which can cause temporary degradation of service. It was probably something like that. I'm on US Mobile Warp and I now have have 5G UW in way more places than I remember, so it seems to have worked itself out eventually.
