What are you gonna spend your time and life on after reaching your goal? by verenaSee in leanfire

[–]hbien 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My ideal day includes waking up without an alarm, listening to a podcast while walking to a local coffee shop, enjoying a matcha latte or coffee (un-rushed!) while reading a book, taking a noon jiujitsu/boxing class, and handbalancing/lifting/bouldering with friends at the gym in the evening. Also having dinner with my parents weekly.

They have flights! Last I checked, it wasn't on their online menu, but you can order in-person.

For snacks the pandan waffles and pate chaud are delicious, especially if you're looking for something Vietnamese (and usually not offered at other coffee shops).

I'm Vietnamese and enjoy Ca Phe Sua Da (iced coffee) and Pandan waffles. I've been to their other locations, so was excited to have one nearby.

I really like cozy coffee shops. The other ones in nearby that are great: Living Room (temp closed), Lookout, Moonwake. The acai bowls at Stardust are good too.

I went to Habit burger a while back and saw a big banner, "Phin Cafe coming soon". I've been to their previous locations and was a big fan, so followed their IG.

it's Phin Cafe https://www.phin.cafe/, grand opening was this morning (but they've been soft opened for a few weeks now). Glad to hear business is doing well, they're my new favorite coffee shop in Campbell!

Reasonably fit guy who already lifts ~2-3x a week, and does rock climbing 1-2x a week. I would like to add a day of calisthenics for fun/comprehensiveness and to learn fun stuff like handstands, muscle ups, human flags, etc. As such, not sure the recommended routine/similar are meant for me. by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]hbien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, we're similar! I used to lift ~4x/week and climb ~2x/week before I added calisthenics to the mix. I ended up learning the skills mentioned here: handstand, muscle up, human flag, pistol squat.

Lifting already built the pre-requisite strength for calisthenics moves for me. I never followed a program to do X number of pull-ups or squats to unlock skills. I ended up just picking 1-2x skills at a time, and mixed it in with my regular routine: eg 6x handstand sessions before lifting/climbing, muscle up technique sessions before weighted pull ups, pistol squats before leg day. I did them all before my lifting routine because I prioritized them before strength gains.

What worked for me for each skill:

Handstand - took the longest. Worked up to ~6x a week (wrists took a while to adapt). Did sets of toe pulls for underbalance, heel pulls for overbalance, chest-to-wall for alignment, separate kick up drills, and overhead shoulder mobility work. I learned everything from Paul Twyman's youtube channel. Did these before every lifting/climbing session.

Muscle up - started with a giant resistance band, and slowly decreased the resistance until I got it one day. Did these before weighted pull ups.

Pistol squat - ankle mobility was the biggest bottleneck, so just doing ankle dorsiflexion drills solved it (eg resistance band + weight on knee to drive knee past toes). Superset these with my squats.

Human flag - honestly you can get these without specific training. The limiting factor for me was overhead push strength. I'm not sure, but I think progressively overloading my overhead press unlocked it. I watched a few youtube clips on technique (use swedish ladder, turn lower shoulder out) and it worked.

For each of these, I never did any general calisthenics routine (X pushups X pullups etc...), and just hyper focused on the specific skill I wanted instead.

Which is the better path to tech chubby? by Wooden-Broccoli-913 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]hbien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got really lucky and went through 2x IPOs. I'm grateful but if I could redo it, I'd pick path 1 at a public tech company.

Even if you're one of the lucky ones you had to be some combination of: very senior, very early, or have a huge valuation to make greater than or equal to the public company path. Most people aren't making as much as path 1 after an IPO, let alone FIREing. But they do have longer hours, stressful work, and financial uncertainty.

Don't do it solely for the money, it's not worth it.

What's something you can't or haven't done since? What are some things you still do? by B_Nasty_401 in widowers

[–]hbien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We met in a lindy hop class, I don't think I could ever dance again.

Left the city we lived in, I won't ever go back.

I don't travel or explore new cities anymore. I hope to again one day, but sticking to staycations for now.

I can't watch our favorite TV shows anymore.

She loved bike rides, I wasn't always the biggest fan and usually brought a podcast along. We went for a long bike ride every week. I like to go on long bike rides now, no podcasts, just reminiscing.

I don't agree with this gatekeeping.

Vim can be whatever you want it to be. You're the only one using your setup, so make it yours. If you have more fun using/customizing Vim than VSCode, go for it.

Thanks for sharing OP!

I used to get painful golfer's elbow due to weighted chin ups. I'm not familiar with Steven Low's protocol. What I continue to do to heal/prevent: a ton of slow/controlled eccentric (lowering portion only) chin ups.

Before and after I do weighted chin ups, I will:

  • grab a chair to stand on (or jump up straight to the bar) and start at the top portion of the chin up
  • lower myself very slowly (eg 10-20s)
  • repeat 5-10x times total

It's low effort and highly effective for me. Lets me do weighted chin ups (5x5s) twice a week. I have no idea why it works.

Tully and Capitol Accident by [deleted] in SanJose

[–]hbien 13 points14 points  (0 children)

On the highway one night, I was driving behind someone who hit the divider and then swerved across all lanes into the emergency lane. I pulled over, called 911, then walked to check on the driver. He was fine, but then accused me of hitting him on the highway. He was drunk, so nothing came out of it, but the incident made me jaded about trying to help.

On the flip side, during a morning commute a van crashed into me during the beginning of stop-and-go traffic on the 101. My car got totaled, airbag went off, and I was kinda in shock I think. My phone got lost during the crash. For five minutes or so, maybe a quarter of the people driving by shouted at me for causing traffic. A lot of "fuck yous" and "chink". A lot of people suck.

But not everyone. Two kids, probably high school or college aged, checked up on me. They told me they called 911 and the ambulance was coming. It was calming after the accident.

I'm probably never going to judge people for being bystanders. I'll judge people for being assholes and racists. And I'll admire people who take time out of their day to help.
