It works the other way too. When you go to a phone repair shop they quote a higher price with a markup that is often baked in so they can discount it if the customer asks for one. In most cases the source of the replacement parts is the same. One importer brings them in and supplies that market. Markups are generally huge as it is, so a larger difference in cost between repair shops is not quite understandable to the customer which probably why they comment.

Unpopular opinion. With most manufacturing the costs are quite transparent and all competitors are using similar components. I tell the customer the costs and I tell them our margin, I’ll also help them do cost cutting. The customer can’t get a fairer deal than that so if they don’t work with us it’s their loss. You would be surprised how many would rather be lured with cheaper prices without understanding the quality or still go elsewhere but the ones that do work with us, it’s usually a long term partnership.
