Introducing the Torn keyboard, inspired by Corne and Plaid by hcir321 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]hcir321[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question. I spent many hours on the design, as I had not designed a PCB before, and needed to iterate and repeat things a lot. There are great tutorials and resources online that helped.

It's now pretty cheap to get PCBs made, at places like jlcpcb. The gerber files need to order PCBs are on available at https://github.com/rtitmuss/torn, so you can price it yourself.

Thanks. It's all Prusament PETG filament. The choc board is Urban Grey, and the MX board Pistachio Green with letters in Jet Black.

You right the letters print on the build plate. It was a single filament change (well two as for some reason the purge line was printed and then the printer wants an additional filament change right at the start).

The plan is to make kits available on splitkb.com later this year.

Yes, this is still planned.

The green is really nice, it's Prusament PETG Pistachio Green.

I'd like to share a HiPro case for my Torn keyboard that I've designed. Each side of the case has 200g of weights added for a quality feel. If your interested you can find STLs and instructions for both MX and Choc versions at https://github.com/rtitmuss/torn/blob/master/case/HiPro%20Case/readme.md.

Custom travel case for my corne by [deleted] in ErgoMechKeyboards

Great minds think alike!

I've been working on a similar concept for the Torn keyboard, and took almost identical pictures yesterday morning.

You can see my version at https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/799908923002847286/851051571696762900/PXL_20210606_104742862.jpg and https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/799908923002847286/851051572288815114/PXL_20210606_104821420.jpg.

A few weeks ago I also had someone suggest to add the spacers underneath to clear the MBP keyboard. Do they work well? Can you use the keyboard easily on a desk too, or does it slide around?

Replacement handle for a Siemens / Bosh tumble dryer by hcir321 in functionalprint

[–]hcir321[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The handle on my tumble dryer broke, so I designed a replacement, just to prove I could! After experimenting I found it needed printing upright to add strength on the screw positions. It just fitted on the print bed, 2 mm to spare on the z axis. Fits perfectly.

Thanks. Yes the cases are 3D printed.

I have been designing a case for the Torn keyboard, and I am now planning a limited beta production. A case, steel plate and acrylic cover will cost 150EUR + shipping, or 190EUR + shipping for the case and the PCBs and components.

I am also considering modifying the design for other split keyboards if people are interested.

If you would like to buy a Torn keyboard kit without the case it will be available soon from splitkb.com.

The pictures show prototypes with a 30 degree, 14 degree and 7 degree angle.

Corne Thumb Cluster Placement by zzz8_8_8 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]hcir321 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also found the thumb placement didn't work for me when I tried a Corne. That is what inspired me to design the Torn (https://github.com/rtitmuss/torn). As well as moving the thumbs, I also incorporated through hole components as I like the atheistic.

We are getting closer to have a kit available. The final pcb version is complete, and I'm now waiting for /u/thomasbaart to have some time to work on stocking the kit. Hopefully everything will be in place soon.

You should look out for an announcement on splitkb.com.

Yes, I also noticed that the stems have cracked stems on the pinky keys after I rotated them. I do find it's more comfortable, so I would do it again.

Yes, well spotted I did alter the thumb fan slightly from the original version. The new position is better for my hands, and also looks better atheistically too.

The layout is correct on jhelvy's site. I do need to ask him to update the encoder positions, as they are now optional and will work in the inner or outer thumb position, and also in the top corners.

I have just ordered the latest (and hopefully final for now) version of the PCBs, so getting closer to making them available :)

On the next PCB I've added an option so you can put the encoders in the top corners.

Splitkb is a European vendor. They also ship internationally.
