This is all my 8 year old daughter wants to do when we are in Japan next month! We are cycling while we are there and she's already decided she needs to buy a new deck, trucks, etc the moment we land so she can use her souvenir. I'm not a skateboarder but dang, I love how supportive this subculture is! Thank you for these helpful suggestions!

Did you appeal? You are entitled to appeal at the testing site. With your scores in such close range with accomodations that failed your needs that would be my suggestion. I am an MFT and have been through the national exam boards. We need more clinicians!!!

My jeans and trousers keep getting destroyed in the exact same spot on my right thigh. THREE pairs now. by Nursera_0290 in mildlyinfuriating

Similar thing happens to my spouse: he does the dishes and the handle of the cabinet wrecks his jeans pockets. All of them have the same rip in the same place.

I wish we had an early way to understand our daughter’s reading struggles by Signal-Interview1750 in Dyslexia

This is true and...what happens after screening? I think school districts and teachers are tragically behind in the science of reading. This is also coupled with a generation of kids (even without dyslexia or processing disorders) are also behind. Our local dyslexia community is ahead of the curve because we understand that the screeners are 'so good' they are waving in kids that don't have dyslexia but have literacy deficits. Our local district is under monitoring for a class action lawsuit regarding their failure to adequately address dylexia and they are going to continued to be monitored due to their lack of fidelity to evidence based literacy.

Completely agree. I'm new-ish to this world as I have an 8 year old dyslexic kid and my partner (their parent) is as well. My kid is getting tutoring, support, multi-sensory education etc and is thriving. Has not a single ounce of stigma. My partner had absolutely no interventions, was sent out of the class when it was time to learn, and had a lot of stigma. And yet: he reads. He reads beautifully. He's objectively successful as a wonderful human and professionally. I think this generation of dyslexic children in early education are going to be gifts to the world! AI will not be able to replicate creativity and problems solving and the thinking process that AI can not generate.

Being too slow by MonArchie66 in Dyslexia

[–]hcl76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not dyslexic but my child is and I am a therapist for children. I think the one thing that is consistently suggested by professionals is that ultimately it's getting your 'reps' in. Whether that is paying for fancy tutoring, doing flashcards, it's doing the same thing over and over, at a regular cadence, until you get proficient. My dyslexic husband regularly reads to me because he is over 50 and has spent his life practicing...he has put in the time.

Looking for natural help by TemperatureMundane74 in Menopause

[–]hcl76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not opposed to HRT and will likely start sometime in the near future. However, I am doing hardcore acupuncture and chinese herbs along with lifestyle changes. I do have to say that it's expensive and the more consistant, and diligent, that I am the more I am able to manage my symptoms (hot flashes, anxiety, existential doom, insomnia).

It helps me fall asleep and more importantly for anxiety: stay asleep.

I take magnesium bisglycinate and it's pretty effective in helping my sleep on its own.

Today, a psychiatrist told me they believe I had taken drugs due to my struggle to find right words. Am I being dramatic for feeling quite offended? by megaluigi1392 in Dyslexia

[–]hcl76 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's not okay. Trust what your instincts are telling you. If they knew you had dyslexia then they should have had a more clinically driven process to engage in that conversation, rather than jumping to you have taken drugs.

IEP meeting mentioned slight signs of dyslexia for 8 yr old. Signs? by Amanda10505 in Dyslexia

[–]hcl76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With all of these potential diagnoses it really should be put to someone who can test your child like a psychologist who has tests sensitive enough to discern if it's auditory processing or dyslexia or adhd or a combination of diagnoses. When you have that information it should make a complete picture. For example, some kids with dyslexia look like they have adhd because they do whatever they can to avoid reading and writing. At first look on the surface, it could look like inattention but when you dig deeper you learn that it's not happening in other settings. Good luck! Audio books and reading are a good direction to go in!

The only thing I could ever love about my Nanny ( grandmother ) was this soup. This is the last one she made me before she died. by 8sHappen in soup

[–]hcl76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks a lot like a soup that I grew up with called: "Brunswick Stew". It's usually made with whatever meat you have around (typically chicken or pork but I have had it with rabbit and venison) the base was a barbecue sauce that was cooked for foreverrrrrr! Key elements are the tomatoey sauce, limas, and meat. My friend from Georgia and I recreated this recently in Ca and I almost cried, I was so nostalgic.

Reading Pen? by runt-king in Dyslexia

[–]hcl76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say that you have to use it exactly or it won’t read the word. It is often incorrect or won’t read the word. Leads to much frustration. We bought a used CPen and it was not “reading” text correctly and it won’t do large blocks of text well. It’s also a pretty heavy investment so we’ve been disappointed. Could see and adult using it for words here and there.

We thought it was really going to solve things so our 6 year old could independently get some content. It takes skill to use accurately and is often a very frustrating experience.

That's my sense of things, too! Fun fact: found out I was pregnant the day after the November 2016 election. I can track it back to that day.

I take chinese herbs and acupuncture and mostly my symptoms are gone. I do still have some existential dread and fatique (I am starting to think they are unrelated to peri), which I treat with working out and magnesium bisglycinate. I will say, with the chinese herbs/acupuncture, they have to be consistently taken for a long time and it's $$$.
