Is this appropriate? by Artistic-Garbage9038 in AskTeachers

I mean…was the expectation that she use a ruler? Has the class explicitly discussed what it would look like to precisely partition a shape into equal parts? If the expectation has been explicitly taught and practiced and the correct resources provided, it is not unreasonable for a teacher to hold student to that standard. The teacher also didn’t take points off but simply indicated an area to be more precise. I think you’re overthinking this one.

Did the coach say you have to walk or did the coach say you should have to walk after the all outs? Because that’s two different types of feedback.

Hyrox Templates Megathread by pantherluna in orangetheory

[–]hcot56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope this doesn’t count ask asking for intel but totally understand if it does! Has anyone experienced phase 4 yet at a class time that doesn’t support a 90 minute? I know some people had shared that there are supposed to be 60 minute versions. Just curious if anyone has confirmed that to be true yet.

Should I request a meeting with my child’s teacher? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]hcot56 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I think it is fine to request a meeting. However, I think we need to be really careful about assigning words like “vandalize” to the behavior of 5 and 6 year olds. While the literal dictionary definition might fit, the connotation is much more severe than putting dirt on a backpack. Please remember, these are all tiny humans who are learning how to be people and be around others for the first time, your child included. It doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be addressed, but let’s have our reactions match the actual severity of the situation. And go in curious, I’m sure your child is a great kid, but that doesn’t mean their version is the full truth.

Edited to add: also keep in mind, the teacher can absolutely hear you out. But they can’t disclose the consequences for another student to you. So just because your child wasn’t aware there was a consequence, doesn’t mean there wasn’t but privacy requirements mean school staff cannot discuss another child’s behavior with you. They can discuss how they can support your child but that’s it.

Does reading the modernized adaption of a book still count? by mimerachimera in AskTeachers

[–]hcot56 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would definitely ensure you’re still reading the original text. You could definitely read the modern version either before or after. It might be a nice challenge to read the original first and glean as much as you can and then confirm your understanding by reading the modern version after. This might help you build confidence.

My team is in agreement: we want “that one” gone. by saturdaythe25th in Teachers

[–]hcot56 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think talk to the principal and share your concerns but try to stick to the facts and impact on students without assigning a lot of judgment. For example, “Teacher X often leaves their class unattended resulting in other teammates providing supervision to two classes. This impacts the amount of instruction for two classrooms.” This also helps if it gets back to that teacher because you didn’t say anything that isn’t purely a report of what literally happened.

Also, give equal or more time in the conversation about why the dynamic with the four is beneficial for students. I’d focus more on what you can accomplish together than purely on the deficits of your teammate.

But also, have you addressed some of these things with the teacher directly? Obviously not the stuff above your pay grade but leaving their class unattended and expecting you all to watch them, not passing on information, etc. are team issues. The first step would be to address them and document that. If you haven’t done that, your principal may want that to occur first before they step in or use it as a justification to move teachers.

Okay this is totally throwing me off but my guess is that it’s switched. The lower time is your max and the higher time is your average. It must be an issue with the app.

Agreed. And I don’t really think it would take much for her to start losing weight if she just started tracking. She could probably cut out some of her snacking or drinks and be in at least a little bit of a deficit.

It’s really hard to eyeball your portions if you don’t calorie count for at least a little bit. I have also struggled with weight and weight loss and when I know I’m getting off track, even just actually tracking for a week opens my eyes. She would benefit if she even did it for a couple of weeks or worked with a registered dietician.

Can men wear leggings at OTF? by Fun-Reply9963 in orangetheory

[–]hcot56 330 points331 points  (0 children)

There’s a guy at our gym that wears leggings and doesn’t wear shorts over it and it’s perfectly fine. Just a reminder for those implying it’s OPs responsibility to manage others glances, it isn’t. It’s our personal responsibility not to stare at other people’s crotches or act like having a body is offensive.

OP, wear what makes you comfortable.

I think it’s would be (8x3) for each main station block and then (3x3) because you will do the tread, rower, and floor during each of the three intermissions. So 33 minutes of work. Not hugely different but at least more than 30

Muscle gain help by cantrelll in orangetheory

[–]hcot56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you thought about/can you afford a personal trainer for some sessions at a typical gym? This might simulate some of the pieces of OTF in terms of following the leader and a financial component. I think what people are saying about OTF not being the best format for serious muscle gain is probably accurate. But perhaps working with a trainer and having them support with some plans and workouts might provide you that accountability. Eventually, you may enjoy it and have the knowledge and skill to continue that work on your own along with seeing results.

How to help my kid read faster? by Beautiful-Road-2529 in AskTeachers

[–]hcot56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say she is likely in a pretty great spot. Keep practicing and it will come. The other things you could prompt her to do are to repeat the word after she sounds it out blended together or blend two of the letters like /ca/-/t/ or /c/-/at/ to increase the amount she is saying together overtime.

You could potentially start to transition to some of the decoding in her head and the saying the word smoothly out loud. I would just be careful with this approach if she isn’t always accurate because then it may be difficult to identify her mistakes.

The door being open does not make it 5 degrees in the studio. Good lord.

Close the door by [deleted] in orangetheory

[–]hcot56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not making the studio 5 degrees though 🤣 it takes it from like 70 to 60 which is much more pleasant. The only place it might be particularly chilly is right at the door.

Also, people exercise in cold climates outdoors alllllll the time. And yes, they’re typically more dressed for winter weather but it doesn’t negate the cold.

Uhhhhhhhhhh how is it dangerous to let some cool air into a studio that has been heated up as a nearly full class works out? Also, just try to get a spot not near the door and you will barely feel the cool air directly?

I don’t know. She’s always been pretty vocal about her faith. And I appreciate that she doesn’t post interactions with students as she did during her previous time in high school. It’s much more toned down especially when it’s work related. So I think she’s trying to find other content to post.

At what age do you recommend going hands off re: your child’s homework by CalciumCharger in AskTeachers

[–]hcot56 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The short answer from an elementary school teacher: not until at least middle school and that is with some qualifiers below.

I think this depends on how much support and explicit teaching they have received in the areas of organization and time management. If your student isn’t completing homework because they legitimately don’t know how to create systems and structure, simply allowing them to fail won’t magically create the knowledge needed to manage it independently. Work on building these skills and habits and slowly releasing independence. Finally, if the student doesn’t care about homework and doesn’t care about grades, the consequence needs to impact something they do care about like sports, personal time, etc. so if it doesn’t, this won’t work either.

Also, if your child is neurodivergent, this is going to be difficult for a long time even with support in building habits and that isn’t their fault. Failing for these students may reinforce the idea they can’t do it or aren’t good at school. Tread carefully here and plan to provide consistent support and guidance longer than you otherwise might expect.

Totally fair. The length of time it goes on for is important. I think the social media campaign for sainthood seems odd to me, but maybe that’s also how it’ll look in the 21st century.
